You have to get the vst plugin SP1200 called SP950 effect plugin and throw it on pete rock samples to get the most accurate results. Also need a tape simulator and fat analog compression on the drums to achieve more accurate DJ Premier feel on those drums. Very important :)

Jazz Records are the perfect place to look for samples. The reason is because Jazz is REALLY dynamic, with so much changing throughout the song a producer is really likely to find at least one part that they can sample.

"It's On You" just takes me back to a different time and a different feeling man. Sunshine on the face type stuff....when the world actually had seasons. You threw this on when you were ready to ride out with the windows down as soon as the temperature started to hold steady in the 70s and 80s

Maaaaannnn…I have all this on original press vinyl. I had an older brother pass in high school (‘84) and he had a WALL of jazz on vinyl. Tons of Miles, Tyner, Jamal, Coltrane, Lee Morgan, and on and on. Not all in great shape but listenable. I’m not a producer but I know there are some hidden gems in there. Great video!

First things first.... As a fan of music, hip-hop, & the art of sampling, I truly love this channel. Secondly, your breakdown & presentation of each song & the sample being flipped was amazing. Finally... I simply cannot choose who flipped this sample better. Primo & Pete doing what they do best makes it a tough call. If we are going strictly off of the metric of sampling purposes & not impact, then Primo actually takes this one. Similar to what he did with Mass Appeal, Premier use very little of the sample, but does so much with it. That alone gets my vote for "Me or the Papes".... Like everyone in this comment sections though, I mean come on.... It's "The World Is Yours"......

@@diggingthegreats @nonamer29 All right, if you like, "It's On You", Google - Nas - "One On One," which flips the same piano section as Pete's beat but swings it just a little bit more. Always thought it was Large Pro, but it turns out it's, Chris Large & 'Mr. Freaknasty,' Raoul Santiago. And also, if you are impressed with "Ahmad Impresses Me," Da Beatminerz flipped a better version in '96 called "Change" for their group, "Shadez of Brooklyn", who they were working with at the time. "Change" was notably featured on Premier's, "New York Reality Check 101" LP. It's grittier/"Dustier", and overall got more of that 'mid-90's Brooklyn Underground" vibe with Beatminerz' distinct crunchier snares.

Long-time watcher, first-time commentator: really appreciate the time you put into these. They're all well-produced (no pun intended) and insightful and as a '90s dude, very much speaks to my sonic sensibilities. (Plus, you got a bunch of my friends' books on your book shelf so that's always fun to see.) I've been listening to "DJ Premier Is In Deep Concentration" since it came out and I never realized that Primo layered the Kool & the Gang "Summer Madness" sample with Jamal's keys too. I just learned something new

He is commonly mentioned alongside J Dilla. I love his sound and I think it's right up your alley too. I am really curious how many connections you could create with Nujabes, his production and samples he used, especially that he used a large variety of jazz and jazzy like samples, just like Premier and Pete you were showing in this video!

Watching this video and others like it,for me there is no competition it's love and respect for the technique of the differences of getting the same song to produce two different sounds of beautiful hip hop joints. These old jazzy grooves are what made me love groups like tribe called quest, pete rock and cl,and others but then to see the work of samples they put into the music gave me even more respect for their sound. Love the video. As you state at the end, that's me,I've always said if I had the talent all my music would cross genres because from my travels I can hear things in the most unsuspecting sounds that would be incorporated in my songs that would literally catch ppl off guard, that's what gets me about many artists I like,it seems as if,like me,they have a great ear for different things and a mental and actual musical library to build on.

Premo's is excellent for its creative use of the sample. How he took this unseeming random little part to stretch it out to 4 bars and completely change the mood to something more mellow is a work of genius. And Pete Rock's flip was a moment for the Hip Hop books. It's just a loop but with all the other elements of the beat it just came together in a glorious way.

I kid you not i was just jamming some of my old 'Pete Rock & CL Smooth' mix tapes a few days back! That said i love all the tracks including the jazz samples they came from. I have loved jazz since days of underroos 😅 that said who do you know that can possibly listen to the all instrumentental Herb Alpert's 'Rise' without immediately starting to sing "Sicker than your average ..." at the appropriate sample location?! No one i know. 😅 i love how some samples are layered so well (where it takes a music aficionado like yourself to help find all the parts) and other are just all in your face where we can all catch that sample in one note. 😊 Also i have a question for Digging the Greats. When you are breaking down 'The Awakening' sample at 8:00 in the video with regard to what DJ Premier did for that Gang Starr track ... is there also elements of 'Summer Madness' by Kool and the Gang 1975? All day right?

Oustanding summary as always and i might add that this Ahmad LP is one of those, that you have to listen end2end. It is one of those PERFECT records. I am just abot sad, that your mention of Dj Premier is in deep concentration is such a small portion of the video. This Gangstarr LP on Wild Pitch was my second ever bought revord and this song sealed my love for the culture and fueled my music obsession. Just like Miles with Ahmad I have to poont out that this is a totally underrated Gem of sample music. For the time the most soulful flip in Music - by far - and a look into the future of what was to come for hip hop and Guru did not even rap on it. I just someone in the future dives deep into the rabbit hole on this. I truly believe it was a Game changing piece of music even though incredibly short. Keep on the goodness. Much love from an avid fan.
