In this video Dennis and Benedicta Pollock do blood sugar tests to determine whether a Diet Coke or a Stevia-sweetened soda provide a significant advantage in blunting a blood sugar spike over a regular Coke. And if so, just how big is the difference? You will find this experiment eye-opening!

When you are on a keto diet, your low A1C doesn't say anything about insulin resistance. It just shows that the hemoglibin is not being glycated that much, which is obvious because of low blood sugar. There is not enough sugar kn the blood to glycate the hemoglobin. 1AC is just a secondary test which is relevant when you are on a "standard diet". The actual test for jnsulin resistance is OGT (Oral Glucose Tolerance) which establishes whether you have insulin resistance or not. If you can safely eat candy and cake without raising your blood sugar much, then you can say you have reversed diabetes. And it can happen. Low 1AC is pretty much expected on a Keto diet so not much relevant. An analogy which I can give is mass and weight. Weight is force of the mass due to gravity. Weight machines to measure mass are relevant if they are used on Earth as they are calibrated to Earth's gravity. If you weigh yourself on the moon with the same machine it will show a low weight which will not reflect your actual mass. So if you want to check if you have been "cured" of diabetes, then you should rely on OGT. If you only want to know how you are "managing your blood sugars", you can use 1AC.

bhojjadamotabanda I well know I’m still insulin resistant, but haven’t done the test at this point. I do know that eating a meal of lower carb, say 20g my glucose still goes up but maybe 20-40 and comes down to below the starting value in 2 hours, and continues lower. I do know my overall health is far better in too many little aspects to mention them all. I’m 61 and feel like I was 40. I realize I may never be able to eat the SAD diet ever again, but I’ve learned I don’t have to, and shouldn’t anyway.

This is interesting. From other things I have read concerning insulin release due to any sweet taste this makes sense. The Diet Coke has zero sugar/carbs, but clearly caused an insulin release due to the decrease shown in blood sugar after consumption. Thanks for doing this test!

@r.j.w7924 3 жыл бұрын
The diet coke did not cause a sugar increase. A 10 point rise 15 minutes after drinking it could have been caused by any number of things. Blood sugar fluctuates throughout the day. The fact that his sugar actually dropped BELOW his pre-meal 30 and 60 minutes after drinking it is the proof that it wasn't the diet coke. There have been a number of similar tests done on KZbin and those individuals' blood sugar levels didn't rise at all. No carbs/calories, no insulin.

Hi Denise. It's the release of insulin that lower your blood sugar for diet coke. High insulin can cause insulin resistance over time which is just as dangerous to high sugar.

The results shows clearly that aspartame spiked insulin... and who ever was insulin resistant did not see drop in blood sugar levels while the less insulin resistant the person is had more blood sugar drop.... This leads to the conclusion that aspertame will trigger hungger with the spike in insulin but drop in blood sugar!!!! Let alone affect on stomach acid and digestive disturbance

About year 2000, I was on a low carb diet. I woke up early on morning to travel and just grabbed a diet soda for the trip. After about 1.5 hrs of driving I had a mild low Blood Sugar episode to the point I felt weak and sick. It took about 3 days to get over it. My theory is that the Diet soda produced an insulin response and I had no sugar to process so it depleted the remaining sugar in my system. I think these test especially Benedicta proved the basis of my theory.

That's the problem with aspartame. I read it is not good for your gut bacteria. The same with sucralose. I try to find products sweetened with Stevia or monk fruit.
@alexanabolic5099

Aspartane does not spike insulin. This is a mith that has been debunked so many time. Cafeine raise insulin in diabetic people. Don't forget that. Also, diet coke has aspartane and sucralose. Sucralose has dextrose with it so it can bind. Dextrose will raise inauline, not aspartane.

No carbs but the sweet taste hits the brain and makes a persons who is non diabetic, or a person who still makes insulin at all body react. The reaction isn't a rise in bg but usually a decrease because it stimulates insulin release.

@@callmescout5831 Agreed, the blood glucose drop from the diet coke kind of indicates an insulin response, so it can contribute to insulin resistance even without a glucose spike. The body thinks sugar is coming in from the sweet taste even though no sugar/carbs are present which is why Dennis and Benedicta had a drop of blood glucose levels. One diet soda will cause no harm, but most people drink them to excess which would cause problems long term with insulin resistance, this is the main issue for diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

That was entertaining and enlightening. I used to drink cokes all the time, but went cold turkey and switched to some of the flavored carbonated waters...La Croix, etc., that have no real or artificial sweeteners, and then onto Perrier, which is expensive, but really good stuff if you just want the carbonation. I ordered a 24-pack from Amazon that has two cans of Cola, Ginger Root Beer, Ginger Ale, Cream Soda, Grape, Black Cherry, Lemon Lime Twist, Orange, Mountain Zevia, Dr. Zevia, Caffeine Free Cola, and Grapefruit Citrus. Tried the Creme first and it's pretty good. Now have tried Black Cherry, Root Beer and Ginger Ale. Liked the Black Cherry and Root Beer. Ginger Ale was OK, but I'm not a fan of regular Ginger Ale. I think Zevia is OK to drink regularly. Other than the Cola that has caffeine added the rest are just Carbonated Water, Stevia Leaf Extract, Natural Flavors and Citric Acid.

The reason blood sugars lowered on diet soda is that there was a little insulin trigger from the sweet. Any fasting benefits are suspended, and storage of calories is elevated slightly. It's not at all surprising.

Remember that caffeine is a stimulant. Stimulating the liver produces glucose. As well as that, studies are finding that caffeine can actually lower your insulin sensitivity. You will notice that the Zevia that you tried has no caffeine, compared to the Diet Coke. Just something to consider in your future experiments. Thanks for the video. I am glad that you are helping to educate people on diabetes, as well as discussing the serious flaws perpetuated by the medical world.
