Once they get the 777X delivered they'll land more orders for it, there simply is no competition for the 777-9. The need for efficient large planes to service congested airports is only getting bigger, the 777X obviously can't turn the company around, but if they pull off a smooth introduction to service it will be a major step to getting back on track for Boeing

Boeing made a huge error in bringing an ‘updated’ 737 to the market when it was absolutely clear there would be major issues. I believe their reputation has been deeply scarred by the revelations of short cuts in production, being in bed with the FAA & the horrendous loss of life with the two crashes. The fact that no senior individuals in the company were sent to prison just shows how far the US system of justice has failed families whilst blackballing the whistleblowers. Now we learn of problems with the 777X & 787 which have been festering for many years. I know many airlines will now move away from Boeing in the coming decade. They only have themselves to blame. As much as i love the 777, there was no reason to just frankestein all it’s old aircraft. Boeing thought of making the 767-400 or 767x as they called it, the future of large twin wide bodies but they luckily decided to make a new aircraft, the 777. Every time you update an existing aircraft you may be saving a few billions in dev, but risking a lot in sales and innovation if you could make a clean sheet ultra modern aircraft that isn’t an old model that had surgery and an engine transplant but still a wrinkled face. The 787 was a success, the 777 was aswell, the 747 was originally also supposed to be a stretched 727. The 737max, and maybe but I hope not, the 777x are aircraft that could have been clean sheet designs and for the max it definitely should have. I will be interesting to see how it all works out. Airbus has two composite families in the A220 and A350. Boeing has one - the B787. A replacement of the 737 will be an interesting one for me, since Airbus will probably be forced move the A320 family replacement upwards a bit in terms of passenger capacity to allow room for the A220. The 777-9 has the higher end all to itself when it comes into service. The 787 also rules the sector below A350 over the A330neo at the moment it seems. The A350-900 has effectively replaced the B777-200 I think. The 787 has done a stellar job replacing the 767 over at Boeing as well for the passenger variant. The other battle I am interested in is between the A350-1000 and 777-8, to see how it plays out. If they eventually go that route both Airbus and Boeing have two families to replace with composite planes - A320 and A330 families; and 737 and 777x families respectively.

The future isn’t the 737…. It’s sales are simply due to the fact that the A-320 production line cannot keep up. In addition IM WILLING TO BET Airbus will have a replacement design for the A-320 line sometime in the next 10 years and will begin offering sales of this platform even offering current order A-320 line conversions. Boeing has become Boring. Ok….777x is needed. But don’t expect it to be the only platform of its size available for long. In the long run… what ever manufacturer delivers value and also safety will win. One huge problem at Boeing is they don’t understand they the looks of an aircraft are important. The new braces wing concept looks ancient. If that is their future… Airbus will finish Boeing off in 20 years. Airbus understands that aircraft need to look amazing both on the inside and out. Boeing once understood that innovation, new products and beautifully designed aircraft caught the aviation community’s hearts and minds. Now it’s run by leaders who look for short term profits and just stretching existing designs as far into the future as possible. For example, the F-15 will be out of production in 10 years. The F-18 in 2-3. This will leave Boeing making a handful of trainer jets for the Air Force and possibly Navy. After that, Lockheed and Northrop will be all that’s left making fighters and bombers. The 737, 767, 777, 787 is all Boeing has left in the pipeline. Of these none are designs under 20 years old and in the case of the 737 it’s a tube based on a 70 year old fuselage.
