Known as スーパーロボット大戦64 in Japan. Literally every mecha anime series crammed into one game. It sounds like some hacky fanfiction, but it's a real licensed game.

so far the only one i've started playing is og saga on ds, and it's amazing. you don't fight in mechs like this one, your characters do juggle combos bouncing enemies off the wall. i thought it looked too easy but it's decently challenging. i downloaded every super robot game i could find with a complete english translation, probably at least a dozen on snes, gba, and ds.

@@Jack_80 Btw, Endless Frontier leads into SRW OGs The Moon Dwellers for the PS4, in case you play that one: there's a version in english released only for Asia, and also it's a sequel to the original two SRW OGs, released initially for the Game Boy Advance and remade for the PS2 in a collection of sorts with the two games; they're very much like this one but Definitely more refined, 100% recommend them if SRW's fully original shenanigans are to your liking

@@Jack_80 that one has story elements that reference one of the OG games OG2 which did get a release in english but as well it had a remake on playstation that I think has an english patch around. it has a sequel with an english patch that takes some more elements from OG gaiden or OG 2nd (yeah there's 2 2's since OG1&2 were combined to make the remake) then when those are done there's a detour to Project X Zone that's canon which has gameplay melding SRW and Endless Frontier. after all that you go to Moon Dwellers and I think that's the story so far

@@surthing6711it is the year 0079 of the universal century, a half century has passed since humanity has sent their burgeoning population into habitats known as space colonies where they would be born and live… and die. Side 3 the cluster of colonies furthest from the earth declared a war of independence against the earth christening themselves the Principality of Zeon. Initial fighting lasted only a month but both sides lost half their respective populations, people were horrified of the atrocities committed in the name of independence. 8 months have passed since the fighting has started… and they are at a stalemate. And that’s only the circumstance behind the meeting of the 2 where Char an ace pilot granted his own ship and troops is investigating the earth federation building their own secret weapon on a civilian space colony. This is where Amuro a civilian who’s the son of the head engineer of the project would take the secret weapon the RX78-2 Gundam to fend off Zeon and it proves too powerful to beat but Char’s skills are too much for Amuro to beat. That starts the chase and various meetings the 2 would have as Char would pursue Amuro and the federation ship he is on along with the colony’s refugees. While Amuro would learn the horrors of war and the courage of soldiers who fight, Char would take the time to take his revenge on the ruling family of Zeon believing them responsible for killing his Father. The character connecting the 2 is Sayla Char’s sister working on the same ship as Amuro and Char still cares for her well-being. The 2 would find another that connects them Lala Soon who is a Newtype, an empath able to connect with people without exchanging words but the war the 2 fight would take her life causing the 2 to break down due to the connection the 2 had with her. The 2 would have a final duel at A Baou Qu and disappear from public life. Char would be with Zeon remnants and help form a new organization to face against the Earth Federation’s cruel task force the Titans and end up taking up a young boy named Kamikle Bidan as a protege seeing potential in him and wants to steer him in a direction better than himself. From here Char would go under the name Quattro Bajeena. Amuro meanwhile is a recluse under house arrest by the federation pulled back into the fighting and joining another anti federation group reuniting with Char and reflecting upon their lives. While uneasy the 2 would work together for the time being. Quattro as Char would make an impassioned speech in front of the federation council and global TV revealing the crimes of the federation’s Independent task force as well as talking of humanity’s place in the universe referring to Newtype theory as humanities future leaving the cradle of earth embracing the stars. Now the final battle with the titans and the true return of Zeon as Neo Zeon occurs where Quattro goes missing and Kamille is rendered in a vegetative state Char would not be seen for almost a decade returning after Neo Zeon’s defeat reorganizing and leading it to force humanity to leave earth by making the surface uninhabitable. Char has lost faith in humanity and believes they must be forced to leave and progress. He sends a new technology to Amuro who has joined a new far more just federation task force organization and wants to have a true final battle to their rivalry. Char has not moved on from Lalah’s death and blames Amuro who’s blade ended her life. Amuro would prevail but the final asteroid that would completely devastate earth has already launched so Amuro would take Char’s cockpit and try to push the asteroid back and though foolish others would follow suit trying their best both federation and Neo Zeon alike pushing the asteroid. The new technology Char sent is one able to take the empathic abilities of new types which Char and Amuro become in 0079 and make it tangible force. The wills of everyone wanting to save earth creates a warm light that creates a true miracle and forces the asteroid back but Amuro and Char would disappear and never be seen again after that moment their legends echoing across history from there on… AND THAT is only the most briefest of summaries of their history

I think people were tricked for a little bit longer with the PS1. But I really like the 5th generation because it showed the importance of gameplay over graphics. I’d rather play a game that was fun as hell but looked like dog shit than a beautiful game that put me to sleep.

@@leeartlee915 the diference is, if you compare early n64 games with later releases, you wont see much diference. but its 100% not the case with the psx. if you compare something like ff7 with chrono cross for example, its a massive jump in visual quality. and even later games like ff ix or vagrant story were insane lookers. the ease to program made the psx more capable in the long run, even though it was an inferior machine(visual power wise).

Switching pilots around in mechs is generally pretty important in these games, the games like to put really good pilots in really crappy mechs, at least for their skills. Or that was my experience in the GBA games. In one they put the hands down best pilot in the game in a regular fighter plane and never moves her out of it. The core problem in SRW stories is that they are trying to cram 15+ different series story paths into one game. There is often SO much going on and SO many characters having a conversation at once during dialogues that it is incredibly easy to get confused and only get a gist of what is actually going on. Sometimes they can make it work well( I believe the alpha series has the most well put together arc) and sometimes it’s just a jumbled up mishmash.

Funny you say this looks like a SNES game, because that's exactly where a lot of the maps in the game came from! Super Robot Wars reuses assets a ton across games and those tilesets would be reused for a lot of the lower-res games in the series, up until around Super Robot Wars L on the DS in 2010

Ah, I see why this N64 game basically has Super Nintendo graphics. They ran out of memory space hosting the literal infinite number of unique character portraits this game contains. Seriously, this is character bloat at its most extreme... I admire you patiently going through this all. Especially the story. I think I would have just spammed through the cutscenes, fought the battles to game completion, explained the gameplay for the video and moved on.

Robot Wars was the British name for the TV show Battle Bots (I think?) in the US. When this game got chosen, I genuinely thought we'd be seeing a licensed game based on small remote-controlled robots fighting each other. Now here I am after watching two and a half hours of a nonsensical anime-inspired game. Them's the breaks though - you play the games, I commit to watching every video to keep the series going.

I still couldn't do it. Especially with actually trying to pay attention to the story.

I really enjoyed this video. I love listening to unknown games from Japan and I appreciate how you could get at least one ending. The bruteforcing had to be insane but this is why I have been following your journey since Superman. What It is interesting is how this series is still going when Mecha anime is a niche genre at this time and really not many people are into it at all. Too bad this one doesn't have something like Gunbuster or Macross. Amazing video.

The devs are aware that Mecha anime is a niche genre nowadays so they've expanded outwards and cover franchises that vaguely fit the mold of the series. Some example of that include Cowboy Bebop, Ultraman, Nadia the secret of blue water and one of the game had some Power rangers pop up.

I needed to watch this one in chunks and ended up dropping it for awhile but I have finally returned and finished it!
