Absolutely! I've had gut issues for 10 years that took a dive the last 2 years. I have spent countless hours meditating, exercising, enjoying my food, enjoying time with friends, etc. and none of that has healed me. All along though it was small intestine motility issues which is resolving now that I'm fasting 16-24hrs to get MMC waves cleaning the small intestine and taking ginger and artichoke.

I've tried everything, and fought SIBO repeatedly for many years... Honestly I would never have believed that motility was my issue, especially considering the chronic diarrhea. After starting artichoke extract and ginger root, as well as milk thistle, to counter fatty liver I can say that my digestive issues are 95% resolved. I can eat normal food again and don't have chronic diarrhea.

Yeah it struck me when I paused to take a break and get my butt off the chair, that the beginning stuff she talks about, eating slowly and getting exercise, those are things you can barely do if at all if you're sick. I couldn't eat a drop without Betaine HCl and digestive enzymes. And without food, I can't move or think much. So yeah, sometimes those supplements have to be the first thing you change.

You CAN'T beat SIBO by taking antimicrobials. You have to make the dietary changes to restore normal acidity to your small intestine, long term. You also need to change the composition of your body's flora, and you probably need to close off some leaky gut that was created when you developed SIBO. Since virtually every plant substance has some antimicrobial activity, you shouldn't be freaking out about that. For instance, marshmallow root (Althea) not only can help heal leaky gut, but it has antimicrobial properties. Other common herbs and spices have antimicrobial properties, like garlic, oregano, cinnamon, ginger, clove, and turmeric. You need a multipronged approach, and it usually helps to stop eating so much carbohydrate, and to clear up any insulin resistance.

So you know every human being on earth that has ever had SIBO, and you know with 100% certainty that none of them cured without antimicrobials? Clearly, SIBO sufferers are mentally scarred through their experience. But because I had it once myself, let me tell you: the strongest antimicrobials are produced by the body itself. It is just another way to look at the situation. She IS right: help your body to help itself! My problem was the disability to sleep. I cured through taking a prolonged vacation, didnt play any videogames, didnt look at my smartphone, did everything that I thought would bring some relaxation to me. Try to not beat yourself up - try to think of ways to escape the negativity that your mind started to create in the autopilot you are in (because thats not the real you, just a temporary shadow hanging over you! dont forget that!). I only ate when I was really hungry, and I ate what was most appealing to me. And I stopped before anywhere being full or so. after one week people told me that I look better. I got more energy, more testosterone - I coulkd feel it. I could breath again when I was walking outside. People are different - maybe what helped me wont help you, because sleep and stress were not the main inhibitors of your body-selfdefense. That, everybody has to find out him/herself. (Btw, yes I got tested, hydrogen and methane positive, had it for 3 years)

I think it's not logical to talk about good nutrition for someone with SIBO !! We all know that a sibo patient can't eat most healthy foods, especially fibre! Also, we all know that Sibo causes deficiencies in many vitamins and minerals, especially iron and B12

Thank-you!! 4 years of chronic gut problems and it has taken me this long to go down so many rabbit holes of ridiculous dietary restrictions and kill protocols that never fully worked. It was then I realised I needed a multifaceted approach to my healing. The first aha moment came when i realised I had a problem with my MMC, I have just started meal spacing and ordered Ginger, artichoke and milk thistle. Next i will look at the foundations. Already the meal spacing of 3 meals per day no snacks has drastically changed some debilitating symptoms such as gerd and nausea plus i have added digestive enzymes for a short period to aid digestion. I look forward to watching more of your content.

Thank you. Definitely worth watching. 2 years of SIBO here and I learned something recently that nobody ever mentioned… smoking marijuana supposedly slows gut motility. I’ve been a light but regular consumer for a long time and once I read up on it further, I decided to quit entirely. It hasn’t eradicated my symptoms but it definitely helped me feel better. I feel it is rarely mentioned, perhaps due to the stigma attached, but quitting has helped me have more energy, poop better, maybe slightly less bloating and I have felt better overall. If you smoke weed and have SIBO, as hard as it might be, stop.

Peculiar - I found that, occasionally, one hit on a pipe really helped. Everything would be calm, and I could enjoy my meal. But I did not like the after effects of being tired, lazy and foggy, so forget that.

Well, to me quitting had the opposite effect. Maybe I got sibo from too much cannabis in the first place, but after quitting it (over 100 days now) I only got worse and worse, not only in the sibo symptoms, but specially in the sleep department. Not a single good restful night of sleep since then, I have multiple dreams all night and wake up every 15~40 minutes (used to sleep like a stone with cannabis, no dreams at all). My energy levels throughout the day are the lowest I ever had, and the visits to the bathroom have increased. Basically everything I eat flares me up, even though I'm following a low FODMAP protocol (at least the gas and bloating did decrease a bit).

I decided that I'm just going 2 do the best I can, follow the diet, but cheat within reason a few times a week, such as this morning I ate pancakes without the syrup, I'm taking Xifaxen and will start taking neomycin, I also take the herbal antibiotics.. if I want a hamburger every so often I'm going 2 have it.. I switched from joints 2 vape, but only a few puffs B4 bed, I've gotten better.. I've only been on the diet and medicines a month.. may take a year but I'm going 2 keep going.. so sorry 2 hear about your ongoing symptoms.. but cheat ever once n a while and have that smoke or edible just less.😁

Wow, I love this. I developed what my naturopath says might be SIBO with bloating ever since I got a job working from home. I haven’t gotten a test yet. But I would lie on my bed a lot and eating meals was always in a rush. I really want to avoid antibiotics and anti microbial, and focus on increasing my motility. I am now sitting when I eat, and I walk around after I eat. I also started practice Qigong healing exercises to move energy around in my abdomen. I hadn’t been walking due to hip injury which contributed to a sedentary life. Today I walked a bit at the park and didn’t experience pain so I will get back to walking again. Will see a physical therapist to help my hips gain strength. I really don’t want to mess around with my digestive system too much. I’m already taking digestive enzymes which help. I started bloating years ago after eating fruit. I think I do lack ability to digest fruit. I was put on PPIs and Zantac to lower my stomach acid. Now I know it’s not my level of stomach acid, it’s my lack of enzymes to break down fructose in the fruit and juices. I’ve also had bloating due to stress. I would take baking soda which helped, but now, that does not work for me anymore. My bloating is trapped gas fermenting from the bacteria due to low motility, because I’ve omitted fruit and still have bloating. I want to push those bacteria down to the large intestines where they belong!

Thanks for the informative videos. I've had hydrogen Sibo for like 7 years now. Totally miserable. I would literally cut my fingers off to get rid of this. Seems like I'm bloated no matter what I eat, and I've been on a strict keto diet before cut out all the processed sugars. I've tried the antibiotics that didn't I tried the liquid-based diet for 2 weeks that didn't work. So now I'm on the carnivore diet. Been on it for 6 weeks. I feel a little better. I thought it would have been gone by but I guess not. So frustrated. I don't have much faith in ever getting rid of this not to sound like a complainer

I was in your shoes just a few weeks ago... pretty much hopeless and ready to give up when I happened upon a KZbin video of a guy who claimed to have cured his SIBO with Artichoke and ginger extracts. I was not convinced at all, but figured what the hell, if I don't get relief soon it's pretty much over for me. Spent about $50 dollars on three bottles of pills; Artichoke extract, Ginger extract and Milk Thistle... Started taking 500 mg of each, once in the morning and once when I got home in the evening. Within three days I saw huge improvement; bloating gone and belching down to acceptable levels. Digestion is now by no means perfect, but at 50 years of age being 95% better is a win in my book. Apparently this regimen of motility supplements is indicated by the work of Dr. Mark Pimentel for those who have history of small bowel overgrowth issues. As far as I am concerned he is the greatest researcher and practitioner for digestive disease in history and deserves as many accolades as can be hoisted upon him.

@@easygoingguy I have tried antimicrobial herbs, low/no FODMAP, keto, carnivore... pretty much everything but the elemental diet. Antibiotics like Augmentin would clear it up for a few weeks but then it would slowly return. Rifaximin would somewhat work once I started using it with supplemental ox-bile; apparently if you have no gall-bladder there is not enough of your own bile to activate the antibiotic properties of Rifaximin. What I have learned from nearly 20 years of swinging from SIBO to antibiotics to SIFO and round and round again, is that if you can't clear the small bowel in the proper manner, then it does not matter what you do otherwise. For me at least, the supplements I mentioned above are nothing short of a miracle. I may now even be brave enough now to try to eat some type of beans in the near future. A few weeks ago a serving of beans would mean a sleepless night of misery.

I did carnivore for 8 months. First, high protein/mod fat, then switched to high fat/mod prot. The high fat worked better for my hormones. My hydrogen SIBO was drastically better after 3 months. I started adding veggies in after 8 months and I could tell right away which ones were ok and which ones were not. Now I eat mod prot/mod fat with some plants. I have a lot more food freedom now and it is great. Definitely recommended finding a prokinetic that works for you.

I just started taking oregano oil hopefully that helps. And I've been swimming laps at the gym. They say you need to exercise. Kind of frustrated. But always keep going I guess. This really makes sense! Managing stress alone can work wonders. Eating a normal healthy diet is much more easier than following a strict diet like lowFODMAP diet or low histamine diet. I get to be the odd ball. 2 years of 200 dr appointments for one urine test to show i had been drinking arsenic and uranium. Let me tell you, heavy metals need tested sooner than that. My biome, gut lining, absorbion, weight loss, vegas nerve are all not good. I was an athletic person with a amazing bill of health before testing positive for those 2 and molds. It was a $600 test that saved my life. I have a lot of damage now. The only thing that seemed to have healed my 20+ year sibo was carnivore diet. It didnt take very long either. I felt amazing on day 1. Vegetables were killing me. Now i can eat anything but mostly meat if I can. Enzymes and HCL helped with my low bile and constipation.

This is what ego free, sound and ultimately caring advice looks like. I clicked on the video hoping for certainty or a protocol... Unfortunately, the entire first section is about how out of balance my way of life has been for decades and I already put in more effort than 4 people combined. I don't have access to the tools and support that I need to promote a healthier living. I have a major oxalate issue and my breathing is very much compromised, especially during sleep because of a reflux that I tried so much for. All in all it's a cascade of issues for 20 years with very little support. There's only so much I can do to cover my basics

You should rule out H.Pylori, and low stomach acid outside of H.Pylori. We need sufficient sodium, potassium, Zinc, B1, B6 to make HCL. Usually reflux can occur from low stomach acid as that affects LES function. It can also be from intra-abdominal pressure, from something like H.Pylori or standard SIBO. Use a bed wedge, google LES exercises and start doing them during eating. Heal up your stomach (which is no doubt raw from all the reflux..) with mucosal healers like marshmallow, dgl, neem milk (1-2 caps neem leaf extract in 1/4 cup soy milk, mix with a fork and microwave for 20 seconds; is very soothing sipped during meals), collagen powder, L-Glutamine, colostrum perhaps. Oxalates are simple; eat a low ox diet but decrease slowly to prevent dumping. Less than 10mg/day. Need adequate B6, B1 but slow with B1 to prevent dumping. Calcium citrate 2-3x/day with meals for a few months, after that replace with dietary calcium at each meal. Oxalates become an issue due to failing of the pillars which degrade exogenous oxalates: Poor Bile flow (calcium is not absorbed, which binds with oxalate, and is instead excreted), low lactobacillus (which degrade oxalate), low calcium in diet, low B6 (Zinc dependent), leaky gut, acidic conditions in the SI (SIBO, Strep, Klebsiella). For most on the SAD it's a case of NAFLD and or bile sludge. Get a GB/Liver ultrasound. Start thinning your bile with soluble fibre (e.g. the bean protocol, eat low ox beans like butter beans and soak+pressure cook to improve digestibility), a few small pieces of beet at meals (high ox), apple skins/other forms of soluble fibre throughout the day, dandelion tea

@@firefluff1 Thank you for your reply. I have ruled out H.Pylori and hernia with 3 endoscopies thus far. As for low stomach acid, I've tried supplementing with Betaine HCL on a couple of occasions with 2 pills and then 1 pill and could hardly tolerate it. I've tried a bed wedge and tried several methods of shifting my bed positions. Besides the discomfort in sleep, it did not help unfortunately. I took an entire Marshmallow root bottle some years ago (with the recommended dosage of course), not sure it was helping. As for DGL, I'm not sure if it was not deglycyrrhizinated properly as it claimed but it significantly raised my blood pressure and did not try it again. Can't do collagen powder because I have an oxalate issue. Same for sodium. I am taking potassium, zinc, L-Glutamine, megadosing b1 (gradually) and and going to try to switch to a bioavailable b6 because I was getting some neuropathy symptoms and had to stop. Calcium Citrate makes my kidney worse from the few times that I've tried it which supports what youre saying about calcium absorption perhaps. I think probiotics make things worse for me, I'm now looking up ways to have fermented foods without high sodium. I live in a the middle east, with little to no access to such supplements and hardly anyone with any relevant knowledge to such an approach. Now more than ever, things are scarce and inflation is highest in the world over here. Most people are in survival mode, me included. I've done more than I have the patience for for the past 15 years +. I'm not sure if I'm mitigating the extremes at this point or if any of it has had much benefit. It just seems like experimentation which I have less energy for nowadays. I will look into getting ultrasounds somehow, neem milk, colustrum and dandelion tea when circumstances allow. I think it's not motility alone..For instance you can have low stomach acid cause of h pylori, in other words undigested food will still feed sibo even if food transit time is normal.

Fully support your approach and the work you do for us. Having said that I had a VAGOTOMY and PYLOROPLASTY 32 years ago the VAGOTOMY was done specificaly to reduce acid production I can see no way to overcome this obstacle.

That is indeed a tough one. From an academic perspective, I don't know of a mechanism/way around that, either. But that being said, I'm a very optimistic person and I do enjoy a touch of "woo," so I would let at least 1% of your brain be open-minded to the idea of spontaneous healing/regrowth of that nerve. Having said that I'm channel my optimism towards better outcomes for current and future generations, amazing strides in the last decade or so albeit still many mysteries unsolved. I've talked to a few ppl who've experienced the same thing after treatment. Technically I don't have "SIBO" anymore but what I'm dealing with now is far worse. Your H2S series is the only reason I'm semi-functional right now!

I love your practical points on this. I think the mechanical behavioral traits are the things that most people assume will not be as effective because we are all looking for that magic pill. I noticed my condition greatly improved when I stopped stressing out about my health and assumed I was healthy, regardless of how I felt. You get what you focus on so focus on how healthy you are no matter how you feel. Having faith and focusing on the great things in life make more of a difference than any drug, pill, or food you could take. It regulates your nervous system. If happiness evades you, you're not thinking about happiness, and the same goes for your health.

At 18:39 you make the point that sibo is a break down of motility. That's why when this video started I thought it would be the 1st step. If you don't have motility then you're going to be so inflamed and backed up that you can't eat enough calories because you're almost instantly full and unable to digest too much which in turn feeds the bacteria.

Good video. The motility you refer to is, no doubt, peristalsis. I have read that frequent snacking interferes with these involuntary waves and can encourage bacteria to inhabit the small intestine. When I was young, snacking wasn't a thing; but now this is how many people eat.

In the case of SIBO, there is another type of motility that is more important: the MMC (migrating motor complex). Peristalsis is definitely important for anyone with constipation, though! And you are correct, snacking inhibits the MMC "cleaning waves," so we accidentally created a lot of unclean guts when we told people to *"eat six small meals a day to "stoke your metabolism""* 🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀

Is it also possible to treat dysbiosis in the large intestine / colon without antibiotics or antimicrobials as well? I have high levels and citrobacter spp and streptococcus spp- but not many of the good guys. I’m scared to use antimicrobials because I don’t want to create any more dysbiosis than I all ready have. I was on high doses of oregano oil for several weeks and it’s taken months for my bowel movements to have some type of form again. And even now it’s hit or miss. Just hoping it’s possible through probiotics, healthy and diverse diet and the lifestyle factors you mentioned.

Yes it is! Fwiw, I also invite you to be very skeptical of stool testing. I made a video about the WILD inconsistencies of the GI Map stool test this past fall, but the company threatened to sue me, so I had to take it down 🙄 Most other "functional" stool tests have their fair share of issues, too.

1. Have you worked diligently on items 1-3 first? 2. This would depend on what your microbiome looks like, so I can't really say... 3. I don't think I would use most of those. Thyme tea, perhaps. @@gutmicrobiomequeen Yes, I eat very healthy, almost everything organic, exercise daily, and sleep 8 hours a day and don't have a lot of stress. I am not on any restrictive diets because I found they do not help. I have been taking ox bile, betaine HCl, and digestive enzymes and chew my food very well. I also take ginger extract and artichoke leaf extract to help with motility. Ok, sounds good. I have done gut tests have used prebiotics to help the microbiome but the symptoms haven't changed so I was thinking that sibo is the problem. I have tested positive for methane twice in the past. I have started taking the thyme, goldenseal, sage, and lemon balm along with the lauricidin and hope to see some results. I have tried olive leaf extract, neem, adp oregano, and allicin and it hasn't done anything. Neither did FC cidal or dysbioside. Thanks for the response!

Low acid allows all bacteria and no absorption. So you reinfect. Also use the proper probiotics after killing the bacteria. PPI is used when you really have low acid. The valve won’t close to the esophagus if acid is low so you get reflux. POI just reduces it more and when off them the acid pours out. Then you go to anti acid. It’s a cycle. Need to bring up acid in stomach. Dr Berg explains it very well. No matter what you take that’s good nothing works if not absorbing. Lifelong searching for the right medicine or foods. It starts in the stomach. Betaine or apple cider vinegar.the body only works if all parts is functioning.

Hey Dr. Nicole - if there are gaps in my nutrition (based on the website you shared) would you recommend taking a multivitamin & probiotics while having SIBO? I have not been formally diagnosed with SIBO but GI suggests I just take Tums and my PCP wrote a prescription for Xifaxan. I really don’t want to do either. Can the multivitamin close the gap? Or will it make my symptoms worse? Thanks!

The Xifaxan will likely help while you are taking it and a few weeks after at best, but it does not help the underlying root cause; and it is expensive. Please try Artichoke extract and Ginger extract supplements. I am taking Milk Thistle as well , but I don't think it is absolutely required. If it is SIBO and motility is the issue these supplements will help tremendously.

The answer to the question of are you getting exposed to glyphosate (9:38) is yes for almost everyone and especially if you live in a farming community. Of course the highest concentration in foods is in conventionally grown grains (oats being the worse) and canola oil. But most of us are getting some from the water we use. Whoever comes up with a water filter that can remove it is going to make millions.

Hi, It has been two months since I took Rifaximin and it gave me insomnia. I still can't fall asleep and have racing thoughts, my intestines "moving" when I get up I immediately have a BM and lose stool. Before I only got insomnia if I took a pro/prebiotic or eat fermented foods. Which I think is because of histamine intolerance. I don't eat anything processed, no gluten, raw foods, no dairy, only fresh foods. The doctor called me yesterday and basically ignored what problems I have. I asked for specific tests like comprehensive gut tests, leaky gut, etc. but he said those kinds of tests they don't do in the country. This is ridiculous because without that you can't know what is going on. This is public health. Can you suggest anything on what to do? Thank you!!!

I assume you got this info from an organic acids urine test, right? I invite you to research the validity of such testing. So far, I haven't been impressed by what I've read. The companies that sell the test and the doctors who sell their interpretation of the test act like it's the best thing since sliced bread, but it's simply not true. There isn't much scientific literature supporting the use of urinary organic acids testing.

Actually, it may be even MORE important to be skeptical then, as we will be prone to placebo effect and bias in such situations.
