I enjoy the moptops interviews almost as much as their music. John, as usual, plays these reporters like he played his guitar, in wild stabs with lots of thrusts and parry. George, darting in with a solo every now and then, and Paul playing the smiling straight man. When Ringo is there, you get another quiet observer whose quips are as cheeky and fun as George's are. The "four headed monster" (as Keith Richards calls them) flew into every town like a dragon and burned the place down. And, they still do...

There are a lot of "Fifth Beatle" contenders. On top of the ones you named, cases could be made for George Martin, Billy Preston, Mal Evans, and even Yoko, being the fifth Beatle. I guess my vote would be for George Martin.

I played tenor sax in Nicol's Band after he did his Beatle stunt. For me being a Jazzer, found his playing too measured. On one of our Gigs I tried to play the Themes a little more laid back, he wasn't pleased about it. Line up: 2 tenor saxes, Organ, E-bass, drums, male vocalist. The music was not commercial enough to make it on the Pop scene. Beleive he went broke trying to get the Band on the map. A single was released. 'Clementine'. Got only one radio play I beleive. It was in 3/4 or 12/8 time I think. Not exactly what anybody wanted to dance to I'm afraid.

Hey, I posted the above video (different account). Thank you for sharing your story. :) I always find it so interesting to hear the experiences of those who witnessed those times, whether they knew the Beatles personally or not. Jimmy Nicol seems like such a sweet guy. I'm sorry to hear he didn't get far with his own band. Being an artist is a very difficult goal in life and the important thing is he really gave it his all. Not everything needs to be a commercial success in order to be good. I respect people that do their own thing because they enjoy it, rather than for fame. Peace

Gotta say it's cool that The Beatles had Jimmie along on these interviews. They could have easily just said you're filling in behind the kit, we'll mention your name to the press but just stay at the hotel and get some rest.

George is happy being a Beatle here. Too bad it didn’t last.
