Prior to performing two concerts in the village of Blokker in the Netherlands - their only two shows on Dutch soil - The Beatles and Jimmie Nicol toured the canals of Amsterdam in a glass-topped tourist boat.
50,000 people turned out to see them in Amsterdam, and police leave was cancelled so all 15,000 officers were on duty. Some fans dived into the canals to try to reach the group, but were quickly dealt with by police.
While on their canal tour The Beatles saw some local students wearing capes, which later inspired their look for the Help! album cover and film.
«We were boating along the canals, waving and being fab and we saw a bloke standing in the crowd with a groovy-looking cloak on. We sent Mal to find out where he got it from. Mal jumped off or swam off the boat and about three hours later turned up at our hotel with the cloak, which he'd bought from the guy. When we flew from there to Hong Kong we all had copies made, but they were in cheap material which melted in the rain storm at Sydney Airport.» [George Harrison, Anthology]
Following their Amsterdam jaunt, The Beatles performed two shows in Veilinghal Op Hoop Van Zegen, an auction hall situated on Veilingweg in Blokker, a village 40km north of Amsterdam. The first show was a matinee for 2,000 fans beginning at 2.30pm, after which they gave an evening performance to a sell-out crowd of 7,000.
n between the two shows The Beatles had been expected to attend a civic reception held in their honour at a local restaurant, followed by a visit to a traditional Dutch village. Unaware of the plans, they slept in their dressing room and inadvertently insulted the people of Blokker.
The Beatles took to the stage following eight support acts. They played for around 25 minutes, and their stage times were 4.30pm and 10.05pm. The second show was filmed with television and newsreel cameras.

This is cool. I’ve never heard a crowd sing with the Beatles except for hey Jude. It’s really cool. Girls weren’t freaking out like in America or Britain. It’s a cool sight.

He was actually a pretty good drummer. He doesn't sound like Ringo, but he had his own style and skills as you can tell just from this short clip. Kind of rougher and aggresive but still pretty unique with a good beat. There are definitely some bands he would have fit in even better, but they didn't exist yet back in 1964. Job well done for sure!

Jimmie was a decent drummer, unfortunately, the fabs is requires laid-back tone from Ringo to make it full

all these non musicians commenting are way off point. Jimmie is a great drummer and is drumming as well as anyone could given the little practice they all had as a group and the immense pressure of playing stages where you can't hear what the other guys are playing. Imagine playing a set with guys you've maybe played once with AND you can't hear them at all over the screaming. No one can blow minds that way on the drums

Some of those tunes were 'standards.' It's only one performance on tape...I was negatively impressed on style... "They" were so unmoved by his performance the musical track was removed from the video - you see Jimmie trying but it's a Ringo & band track.

Ringo was collapsed onto the ground day before the tour. George Martin and Brian Epstein had to either cancel the tour or find a replacement. So they contacted Jimmy. He basically only had less than one night to practice and rehearse with John, Paul and George. And under the tremendous amount of pressure of performing with one of the most popular band at that time. Yet he still nailed it. Pete Best was the og, Ringo is the best, but Jimmy deserves more respect in my opinion.

But in recent Get Back documentary filmed in 1969 Paul states they never played together before first gig. And that is likely since there was so small time to rehersals. I think he was given playlist and records or tape and learned it all by himself. That is good amount of work for one day. He deserves some respect since it’s not about 10 or how many songs he learned, but pure pressure of being in such powerful group. There is also interwiew with him as a member, it’s here on youtube I’m sure.

This is a cool clip. Admire how the Dutch turn the concert into a singalong. If this was shot on video, that hand-held camera must've felt like a ton (or maybe even a tonne.) No one should ever accuse Jimmy Nicol of nicking Ringo's style. And... this Beatles' performance, brought to you by Heineken!

I think it's because he's playing it the opposite way to Ringo (Ringo played the opposite way, having been left handed hence the laid back swingy sounds. He played flams for most of his tenure.) And Jimmy is keeping the energy and beat but because it doesn't have the slight delay Ringo's strikes have, it just sounds completely off. Added to the fact he's striking the opposite side of the drum (not so much the cymbal.) He sounds more like a Keith Moon, a shame he dropped off the face of the earth after 1964, I think he'd have a better rep had he joined anyone else.

Jesus christ. to be there during this performance with everything so clear and everyone singing along. Jimmy's dragging the time a bit but they're still tight as fuck. Ringo's shoes are impossible to fill, he did a great job.

Proof of what Ringo Starr brought to the sound of the Beatles. Listen to I Want To Hold Your Hand here. Not only does Jimmy not know what Ringo plays in the break for the fill but he plays a very sloppy part adding nothing to that classic song. I'm convinced that whether if was Jimmy Nicol or Pete Best or any other 100 candidates from England, there was only 1 person who was made to play drums for the Beatles and helped solidify the overall sound and that was Ringo Starr.

That doesn't prove anything. Nicol played the group they sent him to play and when you are only a replacement you cannot do what you want. Also, and sorry if I hurt your feelings, Ringo was never a great drummer. None of them was despite the fact that The Beatles is a group that I really like.
