Chuck's illness is very interesting. I'm referring of course to the psychological manifestation of what he calls EMS. There's evidence that suggests the physiological condition actually exists, and is fairly common, if not this severe. However, in Chuck's case, I think it's actually an anxiety disorder exacerbated by social triggers and an obsessive, detail-oriented personality. Initially brought on by his painful divorce, a proud man like Chuck would never admit that he's emotionally triggered by anything, but especially his brother. He resents and is made uncomfortable by Jimmy, and it's shown more than once in the series Chuck doesn't want his actions to bother him. "You never mattered all that much to me", "It wasn't that, it was your cell phone!" To be fair, having a brother like Jimmy, so starkly contrasted with your own buttoned-up, goody-two-shoes self would be frustrating, especially when everyone around you loves him and enjoys his company more than your own (Rebecca finding Jimmy's jokes funnier, their mom asking for Jimmy even though Chuck was right there at her death bed). Even if you see the questionable things he does for what they are, charisma always beats dorky. Even Howard liked Jimmy, Chuck was the real problem all along. So, the highly intelligent Chuck deflects the reasons behind his symptoms. But since there's nothing physical to blame it on, he assigns the meaning to the ever-present, invisible electricity. You see it in psych all the time, patients pointing out one thing as the problem when it's actually something entirely different, and much simpler. Ironically, the same attention to detail that makes him a good lawyer is also his biggest contributor to his disorder. Nobody knows quite how to get to us like family. Sorry for the novel lmao.

Can't say I agree at all lmaoo That would've left dozens of questions about what happened to Kim, Chuck, Nacho, Howard, how he went from Jimmy to Saul and got his classic office, and how he went from really wanting to help people, especially the elderly, to becoming a servant for criminals. It would've raised questions as to who "Lalo" was from the "It wasn't me it was Ignacio. Lalo didn't send you?" line from Breaking Bad. Also Sandpiper really wouldn't have had a point if the series ended here, as well as the Gene Takavic flash forward from the first episode. Point being, season 1 sets up dozens of things for the rest of the series that wouldn't work without the rest of the series.
@backtoklondike11 ай бұрын
@@blokvader8283 Some of the questions you asked could technically be answered by just the first season alone if you just theorized. Jimmy cut all contact with Chuck and he even changed his name to Saul Goodman to further disassociate from his brother. He doesn't even know if his brother is alive nor does he care. Saul used his cons to get contacts with the criminal world and it lead to him defending criminals instead of elderly people and it's also how could afford that office. Howard and Kim would want to not be a part of a crook so they cut all contacts with Saul. And Gene Takavic is forever managing that Cinnabon and keeping a low profile always longing for the good old days. It's just that my theories doesn't make sense because there are 5 more seasons that discredits everything I said. You know what the show eventually turned out to be so it's hard to see season 1 being anything but the beginning of the show, not being selfcontained.
@douglassmalls693410 ай бұрын
@@blokvader8283 I would say it was 90% self contained. The other 10% is expanded upon in upcoming seasons. The 90% is probably due to the fact when they started making the show there was no way to know if they would get following seasons so they wanted to make something that wouldn't piss off the entire fanbase if it only got one season
@octodaddy8778 ай бұрын
@@blokvader8283 I'd argue that the Gene flashforward from Uno is reasonably self-contained. It doesn't set up anything, unlike the other Gene scenes, it just shows us Saul's current life, and how depressed he is that he's fallen so far, then gives a brief glimpse into what set him on that path

The scene where Chuck says Jimmy is not a real lawyer made me genuinely sad for Jimmy. It is clear at that point in the show all he wanted was Chuck's approval and love and yet Chuck's superiority complex clouds his judgment. To be rejected by the ones you value the most is just so awful. I really feel for Jimmy in that scene. Like that scene stuck with me, I still think about it from time to time. Obviously Jimmy is his own person and his choices are on him, but Chuck's decisions are a big part of what led him to become Saul Goodman and you can totally see why. It's just so tragic

Fun fact about "Trevor" in Pimento: Steven Ogg plays a character named Simon in seasons 7 and 8 of The Walking Dead (who's completely original to the show and isn't in the comic book source material - seriously, read the comics. The comics are better than the show and rival Breaking Bad for me in terms of peak fiction), and the character he playes here in Better Call Saul is also named Simon. Given the fact that The Walking Dead has an Easter Egg for Breaking Bad with blue meth in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene, there's a fan theory rumor thing that, basically, Steven Ogg's character here would've eventually moved towards Virgiania after the zombie apocalypse began and meet Negan at some point early in the Saviors history.

I like how Jimmy initally tried to scam himself into fame, with no luck. Then he stumbled into elder law, where he could use his charm to win over his clients rather than exploit them. He did real, honest work - and it was paying off for him. Chuck and Jimmy working together to "take down Sandpiper" should have been proof to Chuck that he wasn't just "Slippin' Jimmy" anymore, but actually worthy of his title of Lawyer. Chuck could have brought Jimmy in and lead him to continue his good hearted work. Expand the name to "HHMM" or just "Hamlins' and McGills'." In a series full of pride and ego corrupting and destroying all around it, man, BCS knocked it out of the park. Can't believe I didn't like the show on release because I thought it moved too slow 😂

Super late, but I was rewatching for the 5th or 6th time and just noticed around 15:56 , Marco is saying “butthole” in the cadence of the Smoke On The Water riff that him and Jimmy hum later

Man, I loved this video! It's so good to finally see someone talk about this show in a not too memey, but not to serious way. Its the perfect middle ground between an annoying shitposter and an overly pretentious analyst. You're not either of the extremes, just a normal person who likes these shows and wants to talk about them! It's refreshing. Little things like that shut the Chuck up" line hahaha just makes this video very enjoyable to watch! You have a way of making the pacing very breezy, despite going over everything thoroughly (which I appreciate). And I like that you take the time to point out the great moments of cinematography and writing, it makes this video and all your BB/BCS tier lists worthwhile to watch. Consider me a new subscriber cuz you're super underrated considering the great quality of your videos and your fun personality!

I just realized that the butt-hole song is to the tune of Smoke on the Water which reappears several times in the series
