Every times I hear the song trilogy, tears flood my eyes. The violin like synt sound opening, the piano, the voice, that mood launches an irrepressible train of memorys and emotions. The school, my friends, all the youth's love blooming in the secrets of my heart, unforgettable. In 1972 I was 17.

I was lucky to see them twice when they toured the area I live in Canada. BRILLIANT!!!! live. It's so sad that Keith and Greg are no longer with us. The 3 of them were the best.

I always had a thing for keyboards and when I heard that Greg had left King Crimson to join a keyboard-led trio I was all in. I had also been into an earlier primarily keys-led band (Brian Auger Trinity w/Julie Driscoll) so the move was easy. ELP's been my #1 band since 1970 and had the good fortune to see them twice.

My favorite ELP album and the title track is my favorite ELP song. So epic. I used to give lectures at a college on progressive rock back in the 90s and I would always play this song for the students. This was in Seattle during the height of grunge and the rise of rap, and most of these kids ate it up. Just goes to show how clueless label executives are as to what people really respond to and like.

The music of Emerson, Lake & Palmer is always very complex. Some people don't get it. Yet others understand it right away. Keith Emerson's keyboard work is hurried, yet beautiful. Greg Lake's voice is soothing. Carl Palmer's drums and percussion somehow keeps up with the speed of Emerson's keyboards. They, along with early Genesis were my favorite bands of the early 70's.

At a time when Jimi Hendrix had stampeded the music world with a 3-piece band that featured his virtuoso guitar playing talent, Keith Emerson no doubt had a similar idea in mind when he put ELP together, with the band's output primarily built around his enormous talent on the keys. Greg Lake also had some song-writing talent and an appealing vocal range and so was a great compliment. Carl Palmer was a sensational find for the band, so aptly demonstrated on this album. But yes, there was no doubt in anyone's mind that this was Keith Emerson's band, the one he put together to showcase his talent and it came at just the right time for them to catch a wave and ride it for a while...

First off.... From the Beginning is one of my all time favorite songs, on my favorite ELP album . In the 70s it was a regular along with Lucky Man on FM radio. Amazingly talented band, and influential. I've always been more of a casual listener of their catalog , apart from a few songs . In the right mood ,one can definitely go down a rabbit hole. This album, and King Crimson's Court Of the Crimson King got lots of airplay when I was young, and I would return to KC when Adrian Belew came on board....

Absolutely love this album. Trilogy is such a great song in three parts about a relationship ending and breaking up. Livin Sin the highlight here is Greg's demonic voice. So not like Greg at all when you hear his ballads. But it is a great song. You mentioned layering this is central in the final song. Start simple then layer upon layer adding more complexity really great. Emerson was an absolute wizard on keys. You need to checkout Tarkus, Pictures at an Exhibition and BSS. The difference with ELP is they liked to have fun so always included heavy, light, ballads and fun songs on nearly every album. I think they just like breaking up tension.

Huge album for me and my music mates in the early 70s. Following Keith Emerson sine The Nice .. and Greg Lake From King Crimson .. so match made in prog music heaven. The Bolero crescendo similar to Yes Starship Trooper ( Wurm ) - add some herbal enhancement and off on a comet. Recommendations - King Crimson Court Of The Crimson King ( 1969 would you believe ) totally blew the doors off for skilled jazzers to get rocking and funky ( see punk backlash mid 70s ). Focus - Hamburger Concerto ( 1974 ). Love to hear how it stacks up now from you. At the time it was epic ..

Just listen to you comments on side 1. The Endless Enigma Pt1 Fugue The Endless Enigma Pt 2 is a amazing ELP work. One of my favorites. At the time ELP was under a lot of criticism by music critics as were many Prog bands in the early 70's. So Greg Lake penned these lyrics for the music critics at the the time. Side one of Trilogy really showcases the many styles of ELP. They could do the heavy prog song, the ballad, a fun song in Sheriff but even that song is so well done (music critics called it filler). And did you hear what Carl said during the drum intro? And last song one of Emerson's adaptations of prior work. ELP are a great prog band please review more of their material. Great reaction.

First four studio albums are great, you have to be careful with ELP though, when they are good, they really are very good but when they are bad, they are awful. John Peel once called their music utter crap. Each to their own. Another band not led by guitar but by organ and sax, Van Der Graaf Generator, an acquired taste but one of my favourite bands of all time, especially the albums, Pawn Hearts and Still Life. A live listen to those would be interesting. 👍

huh. I don't know why this entered my head, as he definitely isn't prog. Maybe because he's another piano virtuoso. Yeah, the 1970s was a rare period where keyboard technology was advancing at a time that audiences were open to progressive music. Audiences were receptive to these strange new sounds, which created an opening for bands like ELP and Tangerine Dream, leading eventually to people like Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre. But keyboards became so closely associated with prog that when prog fell out of favor in the late 70s, keyboard-heavy music (and images of Rick Wakeman and his capes) sort of did as well. I remember in the 80s people were almost giving away old keyboards because there was no demand for them. Which made the return of analog instruments in the 00s sort of refreshing.
@BigMacIain3 жыл бұрын
Had to turn my speakers up a bit for this one, Jim. Audio is a bit low on the music side. If you do Brain Salad Surgery after this, you'll either love it, or see why I think they got beyond themselves. Tarkus has one phenomenal side and a bunch of hit and miss tracks on the other. Pictures At An Exhibition was this 14 year-old's wet dream of an album. If you're enjoying keyboard-driven music like this, I heartily recommend Rick Wakeman's first (and best IMO) solo album, The Six Wives Of Henry VIII. The second track in particular, Anne of Cleves (the tracks aren't in wife order), is an absolute monster.
