Right away goose bumps, when the keyboard started. I really love the melancholy feel of this album. I've never paid attention on the drum sound. For me everything sounds exactly as they should. But, hey, Fugazi and Script were my love at first sight with Marillion.

I still stand by my opinion that Fish was a poet, not a lead singer. I liked the first couple of his solo but after the covers album I hated... And could not get back... Is it worth get looking to do with Fish?

I do like most of what I have heard of his solo work, but like you I am mostly familiar with his earlier solo albums, Vigil In A WIlderness Of Mirrors, which I loved at the time it came out, and Internal Exile which I did not like as much as Vigil.

Thanks for your thoughtful reaction Jim, as always. In order to appreciate and enjoy it more, multiple listens will be required. But, if you want to enjoy them more, you do have to "get over it" as you said. Prog music especially is going to have sounds and styles "of the time". The musicians are exploring every possibility when they are trying to create new, fresh content. Sounds, styles, techniques will be tried until they are fully understood and integrated fully, partially, or not at all. The same with the lyrics. Fish's lyrics are a time capsule of that part of history, just like the music. The artists are reflecting their environment. To enjoy it more, try to let it take you back to that time. I get that there was a certain unpleasant sparkly harshness to a lot of things back then. That was when digital audio first emerged. I was there too. What did you like in the 80s? But don't judge yourself. What kind of clothes did you wear? What music moved you? How did you feel about life and the world? I'll bet you will find some points of recognition. In context this was a great progressive album, if not their best. Of its time, yet different from most everything else on offer. Prog was nowhere near as fashionable back then.

I grew up on this stuff, so I can sort of forgive the production. But yes it is very 80s sounding, I recently heard the new remastered version and it sounds much better. At the end of the day, the songs and lyrics are great. THIS WORLD IS TOTALLY FUGAZI... so true right now

In my experience, both back in the 80's and now, admitting to liking Marillion was/ is looked down on. That said, I suspect this attitude comes from people who only know Kayleigh and think that's a good example of their material. The Fish era of Marillion had a strong sense of anger and frustration against the social inequality and leaders of that time (Thatcher & Reagan). The final studio with Fish (Clutching at Straws), was a more personal album, as it also looks at substance abuse and the trappings of fame. You might also be interested in "B-sides themselves", which contains Marillion's B-sides (surprise!),. This includes "Grendel", an 18 minute long epic based on Beowulf.

For the record I love the drums on this album. Three brilliant tracks off an album missed by so many. Fugazi means all fucked up hence the lyrical direction. How a band could get two of the best lyricists and vocalists ever I will never know but Marillion knew that a band without a decent vocalist wouldn’t succeed. To succeed with nurturing Genesis and Floyd fans they also knew we required stories to be told. Jim, we play this loud so every time you speak my flat explodes a bit more. Am I missing a leveller button? Great album and I hope you enjoy it more with further time spent with it.

Hi Jim, while I can appreciate the first 2 Marillion albums but they really came into their own in the Fish era with Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws. I now pretty much only listen to the Hogarth stuff. Afraid of Sunlight being my favorite, but I have enjoy all of them. Some better than others of course. Thanks for the great reaction.

I'm pretty much the same way, and "Afraid of Sunlight" is indeed a creative masterpiece. Started with the Fish albums in the 80s, but now I listen to only the Hogarth albums and concert videos. Hearing "Fugazi" again decades later, Fish's singing just sounds irritating to me. The shrieking "I'm the mote in your eye eye eye eye" bit in "Incubus" actually sounded conically bad hearing it again. I need to go crank up the Albert Hall concert and wash the Fish out of my ears now.

You would really like their live album - Thieving Magpie double album, as the drums are live! the Gazza Ladra first track is perfect! My favorite album was Script of a Jester;s Tear, then clutching at straws.... The lyrics for He knows You Know are priceless... The image of the mad jester capture Fish's madness in the music. The organ intro to Garden Party is stunning!!!

To understand the lyrics of Fugazi you have to know the context of where we were in 1984 ? Protect and survive leaflets through the letterbox , no jobs to be had , the northern half of the country was being stripped of all hope and most of its industry. Miners strike etc . We, as teenagers were stuck between the threat of no future and nuclear annihilation. “ where were the prophets, where were the visionaries” ?

Maybe because it's first Marillion album I heard and grew up with, it has always been my favourite. To me, it's got a good mixture of Marillion being a rock band who can write a song with a hook, and a prog band who can develop a song; when this balance shifts too far one way (Holidays in Eden - bit too lightweight for me/ FEAR not enough hooks for me) I like the albums less. Always love your videos by the way - quality!

1980's production.....There's not enough "oommf" !! I'm a massive fan of Rush and their mid 1980's albums had production that was way too light (if you get my drift). The venom in Fish's vocal delivery always pleases.... I haven't a clue whether the remix release of this sounds better or not ?? I still think it's a cracking album and this video saves me playing it in the car..... The Real to Reel live album has some of these songs on it....well worth a listen

I was a fan when this came out and first saw them at Reading “83 before this album came out. The sound on this album was always a bone of contention but live they sounded amazing, they were always a fantastic live band and still are. The new remix is better but there’s only so much you can do. Check out the live stuff to get the real Marillion but glad you enjoyed the album. Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws are so much better

I grew up with this album not the other Marillion albums, apart from Misplaced Childhood I suppose, so I don't hear this album as dated but if you never heard this at the time it was released I can see how it comes across as very much of it's time. The lyrics are incredibly poetic.

That was a fun journey into my past. She Chameleon is a fine performance but the subject matter is a bit childish. Not really Fish's fault. I enjoyed it at the time but I've lived nearly forty years since then and the song remains trapped in late adolescence. Incubus is still magnificent, certainly one of the best of this era of Marillion. A song about revenge porn somewhat ahead of its time. As much as I admire Fish's facility with words, he rarely touches me emotionally in the way that Steve Hogarth can do. Part Alex Harvey, part Laurence Olivier's Richard III in his delivery, I think he is much more effective when he picks a subject and skewers it than when he indulges in excavating the sludgy confines of his own head. The first part of Fugazi is a beautifully pointed observation piece, much as Chelsea Monday was on the debut album. As to the second part of the song, nothing quite dates it to the 1980's as much as the subject of imminent Nuclear Armageddon. It was more or less de rigueur at the time. I think Steve Rothery was using his Roland synth guitar on the majority of this album, so he was very much embracing the technology of the age as well. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong about that.

If you consider the genius of the doors, its the ability of the bad to work around Jims Poetry, this side, Fugazi particularly, is just so masterful word-craft, the lyrics from fish are just beyond. I put him up there w Morrison and Dylan. You listen to fish solo, the power of the poetry / (prose i guess? actually) is still present where Marillion, just lost that lyrical power and creativity when Fish Left.

For me, Marillion's pinnacle was Clutching at Straws. I absolutely love the 1999 remaster, but cannot stand the remixed production from 2018 - a complete disaster, to my ears anyway 😉 Fugazi is well worth another listen, that's for sure.

Yes we don't like fadeouts :) I had not listened to this album in 20+ years. I sat down and went through the first 3 albums with my son to show him what music should be, used to be and what a poet Fish is.

Hey Jim - Glad to see you’re diving into their early stuff! (Also, I wish I could keep up with your videos more - life is full.) I agree with the production comments, particularly on the drum sounds. You may like their collection of live performances with Fish (The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra) - on Fugazi the drums are better and the bass is more forward in the mix. Also no fade-outs. ;) I also think Fish is more effective live anyway. It has the whole of Misplaced Childhood too. With Fugazi I feel like we see Fish’s lyrical skills come online with surgically precise phrasing to match the emotions present in Script. Then in Misplaced we see personal storytelling come online and the emotional range increase. I find Steve H. to be a better technical singer and able to convey a wider range of emotions than Fish, but I think Fish is better at wordplay and certain emotions (righteous anger, bitter sarcasm, and personal broken-ness a la Clutching at Straws). You may enjoy Fish’s solo album Sunsets on Empire, written with Steven Wilson. Wilson also played guitar. I think this is where Fish fully separated himself from the Marillion sound. Cheers!

Intersting..for me its the opposite..Fugazi is my no1 album of all times...While CaS is by faaar the weakest of the 4..because it's weak middle section JftR, WR, Incommunicado and Torch Song..but that's just my opinion.

Hi Jim - I am new to this channel, digging through your videos, as this is so much in my taste the stuff you listen to. Regarding the sound of Fugazi - new "deluxe" 4 LP version sounds so much better in terms of this synthetic sounding drums. Same with "Script For A Jester's Tear" - big improvement compared to original. Orthodox fans or vinyl collectors may say I am swearing but as Marillion being my all time number one band I prefer those new issues. Just more pleasant to listen. And Steve Rothery must be the most underrated guitar player of all time. Well, for me the whole band was/is. I follow Fish's career too, own most of his albums, but I love "H" era as well. Bought this when it first came out. Remember standing in line in Woolworths clutching this album, when a hairy biker strode up. "Great choice son. Go and see them live!" Sadly never did. Honestly never noticed any production issues that you mentioned.

Hi, sometimes remixed versions are for the best. The Fugazi remixed version is a perfect exemple of it. This version correct the major problem of the drums. But maybe you didn’t know about this mixing problem. They were quite unhappy with the mix back then. It was too late too correct the mixing of this album. The record company want to put it on sale very quick. The 2021 Steven Wilson’s rework is so much better… It has more of the depth and the dynamic range that this one lacks so much

How was it received? Well, there was quite a resurgence of progressive rock in the 80s' - Yes had "Owner of a Lonely Heart", you had huge records out from Asia, lots of lesser known acts that did amazing work like iQ, Pallas, Arena, Saga, etc. Marillion was a large part of that renaissance. So I'd say that it was incredibly well-received considering that this sort of music just doesn't fit the radio mix (or short attention spans!) very well. ;) Marillion was big enough to pull headline gigs at some of the huge Euro festivals back then. They didn't really break big here in the States, but that was probably always a pipe dream anyway.

To be honest, the general populus knew nothing about Marillion apart from Kayleigh and Lavender. Maybe a few discovered their albums after the single success but apart from Misplaced Childhood, I reckon most people hadn't explored their other albums. BTW Ian Mosely on drums came on board for Fugazi and onwards after working with Steve Hackett and is a lovely drummer, irrespective of the dynamics on this particular recording.

Jim yep agree with everything you say about this album I really do not like it....clutching at straws is much better then Fish left and Steve H came in and blew me away... Seasons End is a great album even though it's h first. And Berlin my fav song although Season end the song shows how long Marillion was talking about the enviroment... As Lucy their manager has people that say Marillion are jumping on the bandwagon of the climate change, well they wrote season end in 19891 so they can f**k off. Also Costa Del slough also about climate change.... But no I do prefer Mr H. Marillion went up several knockes as they keep going. I'm been still blown away by An hour before its dark. Personally I think Fish is more a poet than a singer inmho.

Not the best of their albums, but still a pretty decent difficult 2nd album where they keep to the prog'ish style from Script. Still its been played almost as many times as Script to the point its a miracle both (original vinyl) albums isn't worn out. :D Misplaced Childhood is quite the good album too, just a tad bored with the sound and the hits. :P

Love Incubus and Fugazi. First track - not so much. So I’m about 14::42 into your video and I finally hear a Rothery solo and it sounds good but on the whole I really do not like this at all, you kinda mirror my thoughts on Marillion if I’d experienced this when it was released and I was a fan back then I would hold this nostalgically close to my heart. Bass playing is always good the keys are stuck in that 80’s sound for me the guitar playing is also dated and lacks that true feel I get from Rothery’s later recordings and I still can’t get on board vocally with Fish just don’t like his voice Look this up for me at 22:20 there’s a atmospheric section of music that could be taken out of Queens Flash Gordon sound track it’s so remarkably similar. Going back to the drums I never thought about how dated and bad the sound was until you pointed it out I thought they were fitting for this record of it’s time but now the just sound lifeless- dead! I like Assassin do not like the rest of the album or the singing at all however I think Fish beautifully laments his poetry upon a brilliant band that were about to get better. BTW your comments about the Keys I’m sure I said in the first vid that this album was a Mark Kelly led album he’s the albums hero.

@@JimNewstead Thought you’d agree I can’t remember where on the soundtrack it appears it was probably one of the musical interludes can’t remember the titles torture chamber or something I’d have to painfully sit thru that album again to find it but that sound sure did spook me…. I’ve heard Flash Gordon was a wacko film nothing like today’s avengers in my young mind I confuse Flash Gordon with the wizard of oz they both had some kinda flying creatures never watched them but they still around in pop culture

At this point, Ina Mosley has just entered the group, they were imposed this mix by the producer while they were on tour, they were angry that this was the final mix. Ian is far more good sounding drummer than this.
