The sample at the end of Charlatan: --- God, God, God ... is God his name? " "No, Jesus!" "Is there just one God?" "No" "How many are there?" "30 million hundreds of thousands" "Oh!" "There is one in every country" "Okay. Can they talk to each other?" "No" "He can fly, only has one head, but he watches from the moon" "People say he watches over us up there" "There is no right or wrong" "There is no right or wrong" "There is no right or wrong" "What do you think happens when you die?" "I think most of all ... you are left on your grave, kind of"

Since i heard lovelorn crime i'm checking your youtube channel everyday to see if you reacted to it, it's literally the most beautiful song in the world after comfortably numb. I was sure it'd touch you deeply as it did to me, everything you said i said it when i first listened to it, the piano intro sounds a lot like the great gig in the sky, and if there's anything i can say about you, is that you're one of the best youtubers, i knew so many GREAT songs thanks to your reactions, you have great taste and emotions, thank you so much..

honestly you made the right call by doing these three. these are the STRONGEST songs alongside from the awesome singles that are tracks 2 and 3. The album takes a huge dip in quality in regards to the guitar work, chord progressions, and structuring. The last track however feels like it could have been written right after Watershed and it's fucking tight. Extremely emotive outro.

No way. Don't be blinded by the effectiveness of Charlatan as the zenith moment. Universal Truth is such a nice welcome back from that chaos. Start to finish, this album is built like a classic masterpiece.

You are quite good at picking the influences, aren't you? I didn't notice the Floyd song in the beginning, shame on me haha I wish Opeth fans were so open-minded like you are...they just can't deal with the fact there's no Death Metal anymore...and it's been more than 10 years but they can't accept it. If you love "Lovelorn Crime" as much as you said you really should listen to "Burden" Jinn...it's Opeth's "Comfortably Numb".

That is such an untrue statement, I am a die hard Metal head and Opeth fan since 03, to assume though that I am confined to only Metal music is way off the mark, some of my favourite bands are old school prog and as far as this album under review I count it up there with the best Opeth have ever released, if anything Opeth is/was the band to teach me to expand my musical horizons from the get go
@scyphe
@scyphe 3 жыл бұрын
I'll add myself to the list of Opeth fans who absolutely love this album as well as enjoy the rest of their post-Watershed material. My first Opeth album was Morningrise which I bought just after it was released in 1996. And listening to their albums from their most successful heavy era (Still LifeWatershed) you can hear plenty of parts and influences that pointed in this direction. They've always been progressive, mixing different genres and creating their own unique sound. The difference these days is that they've replaced some influences/styles. I fully understand the people that can't get into the post-Watershed material. For me Metallica totally "died" when they released Load and Reload. They had lost it and became drama queens etc... note: TO ME, all in my humble and personal opinion. Same with other bands I love where I stop listening to the music they released at a particular stage because the music they recorded was just not giving me anything at all except a strong lingering feeling of disappointment. It's natural and with Opeth the difference from their old metal style is rather extreme which makes the threshold especially hard to climb/cross if you're not used to listen to a wider range of musical styles. I do miss new sick and amazing metal riffs (although the songs on In Cauda Venenum have the heaviest guitars of the last 4 albums). With the growling I can take it or leave it. I love the timbre and quality of Mikaels voice as well as his great clean (and fry) vocal skills that he's got these days. They were quite good back on Still Life as well but nowhere near his current skillset. When it comes to growling, too much growling in a song buries the music behind it since it's pulling my attention toward it. The way Mikael used it in many songs (esp. on Deliverance and Ghost Reveries) was great; he switched back and forth to put emphasis on different parts of the "story" or emotional journey.
