Hey everyone, I hope you enjoyed this week’s highlight! Given the magnitude of this scene and how emotional it was, I wasn’t able to highlight the entire scene. It just wouldn't do it justice. These are the moments that stood out to me the most. I highly suggest watching the entire scene to get the full emotional experience. Here is the timestamp for when Beau arrives at her families estate: 3:22:20

ok different timeline thoreaux cherishes her beau has a hand full of nice years witch comes takes beau or her brother away child has the most horrible upbringing or death at the hands of a hag Whole family suffers a bad fate and dies poor Whole world is destroyed by elementals, or some crazy wizard or being devoured by the chained one. Because the mighty nine are killed without their monk. At least that one girl didnt get some slightly unfortunate upbringing that ultimately secured her a healthy mind, body, friendships and relationship. Because having everything at the cost of a distant parent is just no live worth living. All those real existing happy people should feel like victims. being a victim is sooooo good isnt it. Maybe grow up, face reality and that life doesnt have to be fair to be good

@@squattingheads You really came out here to post an entire thoeretical timeline just to try n say "Stop complaining that Beau was horribly abused growing up, at least the world hasn't ended as a result of decent parenting." when the comment above is about how Yasha wants (as in present tense, moving forward) Beau to be treated better by her father in current day, current timeline... Maybe grow up, realize that reading comprehension is important, and that a character like Thoreau can try redeeming himself as a parent by being a decent parent to Beau now, instead of using a different timeline as a strawman.

@@squattingheads I think the funniest thing about people with your "LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD" mindset is that you lack the imaginative brain power to handle even the slightest bit of media literacy or allegory. Isharnai's exact promise to Thoreau was that, in exchange for "a fragment of his fortune", he would "get what he was after"; that "he would be a craftsman of great spirits", that "a young beau will take on the great name to continue the success", and that "in the end he will be humbled by that which he desired most". The "young beau that will take on the great name" was, in fact, Beau, Marisha's Character. Through the results of Thoreau's paranoia and neglect, yes, Beau winds up as an Expositor of the Cobalt Soul and a great hero of Wildemount. Being "humbled by that which he desired most" comes when his abuse and dealings with Zenoth are exposed, because what he desired most was someone to carry on his family legacy. But Thoreau never promised to give Beau to Isharnai. Regardless of how Thoreau interpreted her meaning, all she said was "a fragment of your fortune". Beau could have had a happy childhood without an abusive paranoid prick of a father; Isharnai was never going to come and take her anywhere. But Isharnai trades in misery, and she knew (as fantasy hags are wont to do) how Thoreau would interpret her words. The "fragment" that she took was a happy childhood for Beau and a healthy relationship between father and daughter, all the while keeping Thoreau bitter and paranoid.

I know this doesn’t need to be said, but I really appreciate how Matt, Liam and Marisha have handled childhood abuse this game. They are very respectful, responsible, while also allowing it to be fun in this fictional world. Not all stories need to be super real, but this is. I am always ok with happy endings, but this scene feels right. As someone who has gone through childhood with emotionally abusive parents, the way Matt depicts this is very real. The reactions that Caleb and Marisha react is extremely real (the way my mannerisms mirror Caleb is so startling. To any who have gone through the same thing. Know that it gets better. It is hard, really hard, however there are happy endings. You can rebuild yourself afterward abuse with new friends and family.

This was the exact reason i fell in love with Beau. Up until this arc, she felt so abrasive, always perceptive of everyone but herself, and unendingly stubborn. Then i figured out the reason i couldn't stand her was because she reminded me so much of myself. And this arc showed me *WHY* she and I are the way we are. And it helped so much Sidenote: Matt's depiction of Thoreau was so accurate to my own stepdad, master gaslighter. To the point that up until then, I *still* felt like he was right when he told me I was always in the wrong and everything I did right was because of him in some way. And when Matt and everyone affirmed at the end of the session that "he (Thoreau) was gross to play and listen to", it helped me realize that maybe I'm not crazy. Sorry, that was a rant lol

A friend of mine would be in a gutter if his parents wouldnt have sent him to a harsh boarding school. parents down owe love or anything to a child but a chance on being healthy and having all the tools to find this stuff for themselves. And in that regard Thoreau did everyhing and more. Beau is not even really damaged in any way. Find me a person with zero childhood trauma. Beau wants to blame her father for her own faults as a person. Young Beau needed the monastery. Its like a drug addict blaming someone to put them on the painful path of recovery.

To quote Cadeucus "It's not pain that makes people, it's love that makes people. The pain is inconsequential. It's love that saves them." I'm sorry that you went through what you did. No-one deserves parents that leave them hurting. I hope you've found love that's helping heal you. Beau's story really does hurt. Always being made to feel like she was never enough, and so she acts out, rebels, and instead of taking his head out of his own ass, her father quite literally pays to have her kidnapped. While the Soul did end up being the place she belonged, it never should have happened that way and anyone that tries to claim that her father did the right thing "sending" her there needs to re-evaluate themselves as a person.

Yasha being so soft and intimidating at the same time is one of my favorite parts of this scene. I had to constantly remind myself that what Thoreau was saying and doing was not okay. Note: regardless of your opinion of Beau, you don’t get to say how someone’s childhood affected them or invalidate their experience or emotions. Shit that some may see as nothing can affect how you respond to people for the rest of your life. Beau is growing and learning how to handle that baggage and is very aware of her past actions and how they weren’t good but that doesn’t mean that the pain she experienced and is experiencing isn’t valid and important.

Yeah, I find it really quite troubling the number of people that assume that because he had "good intentions" that it couldn't have been abusive or that no harm was done. And the fact that at the end of this episode Matt remarked that playing Thoreau made him feel "gross". ...of course, we're talking about a group of people who watched those scenes with Trent and came to the conclusion that Caleb was just wildly paranoid.
@squattingheads

Saying that someones live is woth living isnt the same as invalidating their struggle. Who even knows what trauma she would have faced in any other reality. Her father didnt actively abuse her. And he didnt abandon her for real. He put her in a situation he new she would be save and get all the opportunity and tools to live a happy live. Yes he didnt make sure to provide all of that directly himself. But is that so bad? Is every mother who gives her child up for adoption evil as well? I think people here downplay what was at stake for this family. The man was not making his decisions out of a whim. The bad fortune was a very real threat. if the threat was a gang running around, waiting to find beau alone to abuse her. Would anyone doubt a father hiding her away? He gave her a boys name in hope for her to get the fortune. Like he really wanted the best for her. When she turned out not to be at risk but BE the risk for the family. He put her somewhere save for everyone involved. he paid the monk to take her. He didnt throw her to the first shady organization to get rid of her. WHAT should he have done instead? What chance does a simple man have against a mighty witch?
@MC-su3sd
@MC-su3sd 2 ай бұрын
He created his own problem. He went to the witch and created his curse for himself. Beau, her mother and TJ didn’t ask to be involved and he involved them in a lifetime of misery because of his own greed. If that isn’t abuse, I don’t know what is.

So Beau’s backstory goes: Dad is told his fortune will be taken by the witch who gave it to him. So he hides his wife and child in his house and never lets them leave. He’s also told he will have a son that will inherit his entire fortune, but then gets a daughter so he gives her a boy’s name. And tells her that she can’t have friends, she can’t leave the town or house, and needs to spend her entire childhood locked away because he fears someone will come for her. A child shouldn’t have ever been burdened with such knowledge, nor placed under such harsh restrictions but she was. She grows up to be a rebellious teenager, but just because she wanted to make her dad proud. She tells her dad her idea to spread the business to Zadash, but he outright rejects it because of that stupid witch who’s done nothing but make her childhood miserable. So she takes it on herself to do it, without his approval. She rebels, as kids of strict authoritarian parents are want to do. She gets caught, her girlfriend/partner is taken and never seen again. Her operation is shut down. And she is taken, against her will, to the monks of the Kobolt Soul. And the last thing her father says and does to her is punch her right in the face and tells her he never wants to see her again. Months later, she gets a letter saying her mother has birthed a son. And that’s the last she ever hears from her family for years until this moment. Her dad’s gaslighting was so impressive it almost made me believe him. But as someone who’s currently in college for a Psych degree, what her dad did was all types of wrong. So yes, her father was abusive, and Beau was in the right to call him out on it.

I realise I'm late to this, but can we add the fact that he spent her whole life telling her he was supposed to have a son, gave a boy's name, and yet both her parents policed any efforts she made to present or behave any way that they deemed "unladylike"? I feel that alone is an incredibly cruel and shitty thing to do to your child, and that appears to be the very least of it.

Her FATHER’s fake act. He’s the monster in this, as I feel he made a victim out of her mother as well. In fact… I don’t think he truly loved his wife, he just wanted her so he could have status instead of being a street urchin. He just wanted his name to continue, so much so that he wanted a son. He got everything without DOING everything. But in the end… he’s just a self-fulfilling prophecy. He’s going to lose it all in the end.

I think the reason most people fall for Thoreau's act is because of Laura's 23 insight check; after matt whispers to her, at some point jester tells beau she believes what her dad's saying and that she thinks her dad loves her. Which is fair, but I can't imagine the DC for catching an experienced narcissist in the act being lower than 25. Just because she thinks he's being earnest doesnt mean he is. also the dead giveaway that he's full of crap is when he said I'm sorry IF i didn't do a good job as father or something. IF? like what, you're unsure? cmon now.

I'm not sure while rewatching this, but when I first watched this episode, I got the impression that Beau's parents seemed somewhat afraid when she came back, which I could understand why, but if they were, that makes this whole homecoming even sadder.

I feel bad for myself to almost believe Beauragard's father, or even sympathize to Beau and her father, but in the same time, i love Beau. And he's so good to gaslight (like what the comments said below) that i almost believe. He reminded my own father, i always sympathize him at a young age. Parents, separate (divorce doesn't happen in my country so it's bullshit) when i realize what my father is, he's taking responsible to help my mother or my siblings and me. I really need help because i feel bad for almost sympathizing, is it bad if you almost sympathize how your different but in the same time you love the person aka Beauragard

I wish she would. But based on my experience of having an abusive dad, I doubt it. I’m strong and competent normally (obvi not as much as Beau lol) but when I’m around him or even thinking of him I’m crippled. Gaslighters can control and frighten you like nothing else and they whole time all you ever want is their approval. It’s gross. I hope she gets her justice though and can move on happily without him.

I don't know, I think Marisha is acting as if Beau's parents are awful and Matt wasn't expecting this exactly, because I didn't really get that from them. They came off as pretty reasonable, far from perfect sure, but definitely not as bad as to warrant this reaction from her. She did some really shitty things when she was young and her father didn't know how to react to that, so he sent her to people who could help and make her a better person, which they did.

The man gave his newborn daughter a boy's name, spent her entire life trying to force her to fit his ideal of who she was supposed to be, foisted her off on someone else when his wife got pregnant again, and then tried to take partial credit for her accomplishments when she unexpectedly came back. I wonder whether they would have seemed as reasonable if Beau had returned home on her own, instead of with the support of the Mighty Nein.

Shes actually blaming her father for her own stupid actions as a kid, says she didnt get enough attention, as a single child, and treats her childhood like it was some horrible orphanage that mistreated her when in reality she was just a spoiled brat. But hey it's her dad's fault, even though he made the right decision to send her off to the cobalt sol. She shouldnt be coming back and. Blaming him, she should be thanking him.

@@AcSlaytah56 this was honestly my take away as well from this episode. I don't understand the "emotional" impact. It seemed like her parents actually love her and genuinely didn't know what else to do besides military school. If it was 3 years ago then Beau was 21 years old. An age at which a parent who believes their child should be doing something more or better with their life has to do something drastic. I really don't get Beau's anger.

So what i gathered was Bo's father believe in the witch that bo will inherit the ranch But growing up with a father who work everyday in his life to not loose what he had, remember he had nothing to loose and now he have everything to loose Bo did say that her father would told her this story Everytime he had the chance to imagine being told that all your life have been set and stone. So what would a young and emotionally unstable teen do? Yup, do everything they can to disappoint them inorder to prove her "Destiny" was not set and stone, add that with people who pretended to be friends with her cause of their family wealth will lead to a person who thinks everyone was untrustworthy. And the fact that bo father never took the time to understand Bo until it was too late, he can't really had any impact on her behavior anymore it too late for him now so the best way he could think of was the sol, but let be honest if you were being taken away without your consent wouldn't you fight back and the slap from her dad just added more salt to the injury

Its the jester situation all over again. as in: The mighty nine kill a guy for being arguable dickish. And a big bunch of fans celebrate them for it. Cause their emotional bonding with the characters is more important than whats ethically right. (not killing people for minor misbehavior) In the fans mind Beaus murders are totally the fault of her upbringing. Especially her father While Thoreau,...nobody even cares how he was raised. His unethical behavior is 100% his own actions. No one else is to blame. He is totally an abuser. There is no grey when its about his mistakes. Also for CR fans: Being an Abuser is worse than being a Murderer, Slaver, Criminal, Drug Dealer Cause thats what jesters father does and he is more accepted than Thoreau.

Beau didn't murder people. She stole her fathers wine and sold it. She was a smuggler. She was a kid reacting badly to the environment she was raised. But Beau's father was an adult man taking out his own traumas on his child. He suffered an abusive childhood, and was stressed which *explains* his behavior but it doesn't excuse it. Beau has changed as a person, she recognized how shitty her behavior was and worked (and isbstill working) to become a kinder person. She is much different than the Beau we first met at the beginning of the campaign. Her father has only deflected blame. All his apologies boil down to "but it wasn't my fault" and he shows no desire to change his behavior. Simplified: a child and an adult are put through a miserable situation, both get mad at each other, and both throw a temper tantrum. Who of the two should be expected to step above it and be the role model and guide the other through? A child shouldn't be expected to parent a parent. When you have a kid, you are making a comittment to love, raise, and guide them. Look parents aren't perfect sure. There we a couple times where my parents got irritated and snapped at me when tensions were high. But after things cooled down they came to me and apologized and basically said "Our behavior in that situation wasn't acceptable and you didn't deserve that." There was no "but you upset us" or "it wasn't completely our fault you made us mad" They accepted that as the adult in the situation they had done wrong. They set a better example. And I hold a great deal of respect for them. And I try to do the same, I'm hardly a moral paragon, but my parents set a standard of behavior for me and I seek to follow that. Thoreau has done the opposite of that, honestly it sounds like he never apologized for his behavior prior to this. And his apology now barely qualifies as an apology, as he avoids actually taking complete responsibility for his behavior and still shifts blame to Beau and his father.

I think we all forget that beau is (possibly) the youngest member of the M9.(Jester is 20 something too, but as that is uncertain and as she *SPOILERS* ages 5-ish years later on, beau is now for sure the youngest) I always forget that she is baby with everyone else having families, previous wives, years on the sea, year on a school/santorium, years they can't remember... i always forget that all that has happened to Beau is VERY recent, she just now stopped being a teenager. She was taken at what, 18/19? And is only 22 now. Her attitude problems make a lot more sense after the age reveal. She is still, in a lot of ways, a rebellious teen trying to prove herself, trying to be more. Is only with the mighty nine that she eventually stops trying and just becomes. She fills the role of expositor nicely and finally has a family that put up with the shitty part of her behaviour and stuck through until she didn't need that front anymore. She'll still be a shithead ofc, but finishing the campaign it's nice to see this evolution. Like, it's clear that her acting out during her teenage years were a mix of "call for attention" from abusive dad and wanting to pave her own way in the world and make said abusive dad proud. And all she got from her own family was dismissal, a kidnapping and a punch to the face. So she never lost the extremely combative attitude. But we see glimpses of her wanting to shed that front throughout the campaign, mainly with her interactions with Dairon. The first person that Beau respected to actually see the potential and not dismiss it. The first person to actually show some care. And then the whole thing falls away when the M9 becomes her family for real. They've seen her shitty side. They've seen her abrasive personality. And they didn't throw her aside like everyone else, like every teacher, every family member. They stuck through. They've seen her worst and remained at her side unconditionally. And I think that's why she feels so strongly for this new family. And I love that. I'm honestly just rambling here, but I quite like this story.
