In 2011, Naghmeh Farzaneh left her home in Iran to study abroad in the United States. When she first arrived, a simple exchange-like selecting ingredients in line at a fast food restaurant-could quickly become an overwhelming situation. During these difficult times, Farzaneh would take comfort in thinking about a piece of wisdom her mother shared while planting geraniums. In Scent of Geranium, Naghmeh Farzaneh brings watercolors to life in a beautiful animation that highlights her experience as an immigrant.

I was an exchange student. I felt the difficulty of language. But, 3 months was enough to overcome it. It was a challenging time, but the way to cut off your fear is openness and communication. I don't care people sometimes laughed on my accent. Slowly they admit me as the part of their community. What a beautiful time in life.

I like the metaphor, great storytelling, indeed. I never realized homesickness so deep as this, so sad but enlightening; we are all geraniums whose roots must take time to grow... stronger!

I just move to US a few months ago and I feel the same, the hard part is the language, you think you speak English until you are in country with native speakers 😰
@misspat7555
@misspat7555 3 жыл бұрын
English is a very hard language, even native speakers have accents and dialects and argue about the right ways of speaking. Sometimes, there is even more than one right way to say something, and our idioms are a nightmare. I just realized that is a metaphor, it means that our idioms are like something that would be in a nightmare... So if a native speaker is upset that you have an accent, or are speaking a foreign language on the phone, or do not understand them, or use a word wrong, they are just being rude, do not mind them. 🙂

This delightfully imaginative animation really clarifies in simple language, the complexity & worries of studying in a foreign city to a new country. Born & bred in the U.K but I still understand how there was immediate culture shock for me, when I arrived at JFK then Lower East Side in Manhattan. The comparison between geranium & its roots was most clever.

There's a lot of people who don't get the chance to chase their passions into a place where the environment around them seems to alienate them and them only thing left is their work ethnic and family bribing them back home or taunting them for leaving. This was a story, then illustrated to translate something clearer to common people. Monochromatic scenery made the viewer relate to being isolated and only able to see black and white. Good video, hope in brings a lot of understanding to people strong with their own beliefs and endeavors to never give their success time and other things... ^w^

This sounded over dramatic than what i feel for 2 month as a indonesian student in australia, idk if i have a better preparation by playing online video game in us server and practicing my english there that develop my accent to be a bit more southern murica, or its just me that never feel that i never felt attached to any nation or organization due to the discrimination because my race or being a rich kid or always being my teacher favorite. My point being i think its easier for me due to my disconnection and understanding of both side of coin both bad and good of the culture that im going to face. I dont know if this will help, but imo the best way to relieve homesickness is to feel never having one.

The WHOLE problem is if you can't get back to your homeland. That means that your family or other people in your homeland cheated on you and want you far away. If you are a tourist and can get back anytime, this is just fun! It's like a door that closes behind you. If you have the key, NO PROBLEM …!!

Disgusting lies. This is the case of a rich girl who can get back to her homeland if she wants. If you are a poor refugee, you can't get back WHATEVER happens to you. LIARS. If you have options, you should not complain. Or if you feel you can't get back, then the problem is in your homeland and the people (family, etc.) that obliged you to stay abroad!
@graysongarner7479
@graysongarner7479 Жыл бұрын
If that is the case... then I am a rich kid who can most definitely go back to my homeland if I want. I have been in Germany for 8 months now and her situation is just as valid as mine. She never claims to be a refugee in the video. Maybe if we tone down the assumptions, we could see that no matter where one is from and where one moves, culture shock, language difficulties, and homesickness are experienced. If you replaced Iran with any other country and remade the video, it would be the exact same narrative. But if this all boils down to her being from Iran, it's nonetheless ironic because your comment supports her claims about the attitudes towards her people. It's a shame really.
