The odd wheel base on the class 600 was due to two main factors, they needed to be eight coupled to manhandle some pretty heavy coal trains over some quite steeply graded lines in the Lanarkshire area (although they did work over most of the Cally system over the years). A lot of the branches that connected the pits to the mainline were fairly lightly laid, so the long wheel base was designed to spread the weight as much as possible and extend the route availability. And they did work passenger trains, not frequently, but they were called on when needed on bank holiday 'sea side specials' to places like Ayr, and race day trains etc. The 191's were built in the early 1920 to works the Skye boat trains to Oban, they weren't that successful, being poor steamers, having a vicious hammer blow effect on the track, needless to say as soon as the LMS introduced the Black Fives, they stated to be withdrawn, and although three had their withdrawal postponed by WW2 and the locomotive shortage, all were gone by early 1945. Fun vid mate, keep up the good work

20:31 Scratch that, we need something from William Pickersgill in r-t-r OO gauge. Don't even know why no one has brought it up to main manufacturers as Hornby have done the Drummond 264 "Pug" and No. 123 plus Bachmann (with Rails of Sheffield) are yet to release the McIntosh 812 but only the kit manufacturers have done something for Pickersgill.

hi sam... in the 70s i built my first layout in the car garage. the car ended up outside. after moving layout was ripped out and packed. in the 2000s i went for simulations. built my own routes only to have it crash or trains not following programs and wander about. for this reason i quit simulators and now in 2020 i decided to go back to models. nice video. looks like a rapido build lol.

The Caledonian 191 class reminds me of GER S69, and its revised form (LNER B12/3 Gresley Rebuilt) has quite a few models made by Hornby since late 80s. By the way, Caledonian 191 and GER S69 are both blue pre-grouping 4-6-0 with air brake.

I’d make a comment with a quote from Thomas and Friends season two, something like “Donald and Douglas are a pair of Scottish Twins” etc etc, but I find that those types of comments are all too common so I’ll say instead that the two are my favorite characters. I do know that Donald and Douglas were CR 812s and not CR 600s but y’know, same railway. The livery is very Donald-and-Douglas-esque as well. Very nice video Sam! And a nice engine as well!

This is quite funny, in that the original 191 class were not very good steamers and required a very well trained fireman, then again, they could fly on the flat with said well trained fireman. They usually handled the Glasgow-Oban trains, often double-headed with the earlier (and much more successful!) 55 class engines. The 191 class came out in 1922, but did NOT have superheating because Pickersgill (the CME after McIntosh) wanted instant throttle response rather than waiting for the steam to go through the superheater elements. They also had astonishingly bad hammerblow!

Hey Sam, don't know if you know but I'll tell you just in case (might have already told you, but my memory's a sieve). TS2021 got an update a little while back that increases loading speeds. Just open Steam, right click on the game, click properties and then under Launch Options, type '-fastload' (minus quotations). It should make loading on some more detailed routes much faster.

Steam is not so uncommon at Oxford but that would turn a few heads.The strange wheel spacing makes sense as it leaves room for a good ashpan. Can you imagine the clash of buffers as the unbraked wagons crashed into each other when the train stopped?

One of the unfortunate "features" of early Westinghouse brake systems is that you have to fully release the brakes before you can reapply them. I believe a good few collisions were caused by that.

I suppose DLC is a major part of these types of games, which means that they can become pretty expensive (I remember that Trainz has a subscription for the full experience on top of the base price.) I have thought about playing one of these simulator games, but they always seemed so daunting to me. It would be interesting to have a Cape gauge layout with the various tender tanks of South Africa among other things. Japan also has some interesting steam locomotives of that gauge. The JNR Class E10 is one that fascinates me the most as it is a 2-10-4T, which is huge for a non-Garratt tank engine.

My girlfriend got me TS 2021 in december. My old laptop really struggled, but my new computer copes better. However, there's several issues I've found, like if you accidentally press the door open button instead of releasing the brakes and you don't notice, 40 minutes into a simulation, it doesn't tell you and it says game over, so it ends the simulation. So I've basically given up trying to get it to work properly. I only have the Fife Circle and the WCML south areas, with an A4, 68, 158, 170/4, pendolino, super voyager, and 350s available to use (plus american/german stuff). And I'm not gonna buy more assets unless the game works properly.
@davidbugler45973 жыл бұрын
Overall wheelbase is dictated by the size of the boiler -- a big powerful one in this case -- between firebox and smokebox, with the cylinders directly below the smokebox. Unless you go for one of those unstable 'long boiler' types, the rear axle sits behind the firebox with the next one just in front of it. Then the driven axle's position is dictated by the required length of connecting-rod between crosshead and crank. This in turn -- with such a big boiler and firebox on a comparatively small engine -- means the second and third axles need to be closer than you might expect. In effect they are sitting right on either side of where you'd see the middle axle on an 0-6-0.
@ethanwhisman54593 жыл бұрын
0-8-0 I guess it's because I I've seen so many American locomotives with similar designs that it makes sense because we have a lot of 4-8-0,2-8-0,4-8-4 2-8-2 And most of them are just freight locomotive some of them have the capacity to pull passenger trains but mainly they're used in places where you have a lot of heels
