I love that Ireland has " changed " . . . It's not that I'm not nostalgic, but I was born in an a sense of Ireland that really only exists in our heads or heart's. The thing is, I've been to that Ireland. You used to be able to camp on top of Navan forts! Now you can't get within a mile without a tourist guide, ( lol I pretended I only spoke Irish, you had to be there * edit the guide was an English lady) 😂 Lovely wee trip. Good man. Carry on. ∆

Just one more , Greg, did you see many of the horse traps getting about Killarney? There were loads before. As you say, there's a good reason for the tourist industry in Killarney and that's to put food on the table for a lot of families. Good for you to point out how clean the town is, a great feature of Irish street's you have presented. With horses comes rare and endangered trade's and skills. Another reason to support these towns. No body likes the "Plastic Paddy" tag, that's the flip side unfortunately.

I’ve been going there since the 1960s. It’s improved so much over the years. Back then the tourist offerings were tatty and the place was a bit rundown and sad. It’s now clean, bright and prosperous. It’s never been a “typical” Irish town, because of its role as a tourist hub, but despite that it’s a fun place to spend a day or two. If you want to experience the real Irish town life though, you need to move on and leave the American tour buses behind.

Tod Andrews, a Fiana Fail TD was given the job of Minister for Tourism back in the 1940s. He hated the job and declared in the Dail that 'we fought to get the British Aristocracy out of Ireland and I'm damned if I'm going to turn the country into Jaunting car drivers and chamber maids'. Needless to say he was quickly shifted from Tourism and put in charge of Bord na Mona (the Irish Turf Board) where he was more successful. I can't help but feel a certain sympathy for his statement given the amount of fake Oirishness an Paddywhackery that pervades places like Temple Bar or Killarney these days. Still, I loved the stroll around the ho.e of Irish Tourism. Thanks again.

I don´t want money!! I want your friendship!! I live in Orlando Florida, by far, the tourist capital of the world, 4x the number of France. In 2028 Killarney will become my permanent home, split half the way with Spain. I LOVE The Spanish. So, let´s make a deal. You wanna work out paths and plans between Ireland, Florida and Spain? All I want is to have Irish and Spaniard friends. That´s all. I got the money I need.

Now this is a strangely accurate description of the situation at hand, and I'm going to ask you a question I'm certain you never saw coming... Did Killarney smell like "Sea salt & Orchids" while you were there? Permit me to elaborate, won't you? My mother went on holiday and I have been gathering her postal parcels and deliveries during her absence. Yesterday she called and asked me to open a few of them to see if items had arrived she had been waiting for that I might forward them onto her. She knows very well about my love of Ireland and while opening parcels I found a "Killarney Golf & Fishing Club Collection candle" with a sea salt & orchid scent (Who knew such things even existed?). I was amused by this and asked her what possessed her to purchase such a thing much less at $40 USD? She cursed and said it was supposed to be a Christmas gift for me. If ever a place could be described as a "tourist trap" you'll know it when they have their own scented candle. She had the best of intentions.... and I'm just, well, I am amused at the idea of my home smelling of a candle which is supposed to capture the smell of a golf and fishing resort. I don't think of fishing resorts smelling too particularly lovely, do you? On another note I wonder if they might have a Craggy Island scent for sale somewhere on the internet? I assume the Craggy Island scent would be a mixture of Drink, Girls and feck.... Another lovely video. Thanks so very much!
@nakedireland3 ай бұрын
Ha ha, what a nice thing for your mum to do. I must admit that I don’t remember any such smell there, but then I wasn’t in many candle shops!! But I can imagine such a ‘unique’ candle costing 40 dollars in Killarney! Many thanks for your interest as always - I’ll try and keep these videos coming your way Timothy.

It’s interesting. I wonder if the folk in such places as Killarney might adopt the Spanish attitude of kicking back against tourism..you’d hope not, but watching this and knowing the place as well as I do, it’s probably not beyond the realms of possibility.

Aren't the jaunting cars more of a way to get out of Killarney to see the picturesque sights of the nearby Killarney National Park rather than to see the town itself, with a guide who can explain the history and locations? Sure they have to start of from there are the hotels and tourists and because Killarney is so famous and popular it has become a bit of a tourist trap and there's a lot of traffic now, but it's still worth a visit as it just about copes.
