Such a sad story. Killer Whales are so sweet. Namu was a sweetheart. When Namu died he was only eleven cause he was ten when he was bought. Namu was 9,000 pounds and 21 feet long. He was a big boy. A book was also written about him, it was called My Friend Namu. It was published in 1966. Namu and Shamu’s names were used as a stage name for the killer whales at Seaworld. Namu left a legacy behind that will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace Namu.

Not exactly the best legacy just saying

It was a blessing and a curse. The blessing was that people realized that orcas are not vicious man eaters, but are intelligent and friendly and we have no reason to fear them. The curse is that it pretty much kickstarted the orca capture business.

Namu didn’t accept his new home. He saw no means of escape and was just resigned to his fate.

I've always been a lover of orcas since I was little...I remember watching and recording this documentary when I was little and watching it over and over...and cried when Namu died...thanks for the upload!

I love (note sarcasm) how they make his death out to be peaceful and quick when in reality the infection damaged his nervous system and he became unresponsive two days before his death. The day he died he crashed head long, full speed into the wire mesh of his pen became entangled, and drowned a few minutes later. I've also heard that Namu heard a pod of Killer Whales near his pen and tried to swim to them and became entangled in the mesh and drowned

Ted Griffin's existence is such a horror for all the captive orcas.

Fascinating to see this, and reflect back, on the way things were, when we knew little about orcas, and our relationship to them was less than stellar.

He was basically in a Sea Pen & He died from an infection due to polluted water. Sea pens have no filtering technology.

After all we've put them through all these years wild Orca are still humble towards us. That's what amazes me the most with these complex beings. They haven't held a grudge. We all need to learn something from them.

It's amazing how much I loved this documentary when I was younger, but looking back on it now I realize (although it touches on the evils of Killer Whales in captivity) it does gloss over a lot of issues. Still love the post though. Thanks.

I am going to use this footage in my orca presentation. Thank u. And Anna Hasioti if Griffin hadn't captured Namu we might still think killer whales are dangerous

Killer whales are not dangerous, while they are in the wild in their habitats, they never attack humans, but when they are sent to tanks tiny compared to their size, and still starve them just by not performing ridiculous tricks, it's hard to want that. they are sweet and peaceful aren't they?

Lifespan is not the only measure of the justness of captivity. Think about this -- maybe increasing lifespan just increases the length and amount of suffering. Is keeping a torture victim alive longer a virtue?
