Phil, I grew up on a small farm and we had a 1.5 acre fruit orchard in front with Bing Cherrie, Plum, Pear and several varieties of Apple as well as a couple of old Black Walnut trees. After many years of growing older, I returned to that little farm and found our little orchard wiped out and houses planted in their place. I often wonder how many beautiful bowls were made from those trees. I can only hope that’s what actually happened. Your Cherrie Plum bowl reminded me of our little orchard... thanks and nice work!

There used to be an old saying, "you can never go home again" which means, it will never be the same as you remembered. It's a shame about all those trees and I'm with you, we'll just imagine the great pieces turned from their wood. Thank you, Russ, for your great comment! Phil

Phil that piece of wood spent many many years just growing and getting all gnarling looking waiting for the day you would turn it into something beautiful. And Beautiful it is. You brought out the best in nature on that one. As soon as the piece flew off everything changed and to the good. I was so glad when you said you was going to use shellac for the finish. That was the perfect finish to use and you did a great job getting it on. Wow what a great find Tuffy came across and what a great gift in giving it to you. That tool I made used the insert that your hollower has. I stopped the video when you were showing it on your older video and took a look at the number. It was the Ci5 I have borrowed lots of ideas from you and it has paid off. I do have a larger round insert tool though and tried it first. That is when the light came on and I recalled your hollowing tool. And thank you for the Shout Out. Take care my friend. Gary
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, Gary! I agree, the missing piece helped make the end result what it is. And you're right about the shellac. I kind of hold that for the really nice pieces of wood, which this certainly is. I too, have a larger round cutter that I only use for hogging out on a difficult piece. It can be real grabby and I don't love using it. Glad the smaller cutter worked for you. Phil

Probably goes back to my time working in Canada many moons ago, followed by spending nearly five years trying to emigrate to the USA (the legal way), but the red tape wore both myself and my wife out, the offers of employment expired & in the end it just wasn’t to be. Never stopped my love for America and the friendships I’ve enjoyed over the years with your fellow countrymen and women & of course those phrases that have been picked up along the way.

Howdy Phil what a nice piece of wood... you are right.. Looks like part of it Is burl . the plum wood I have pieces of always flying off . Made 18 Oz beer mug with deer antler handle out of one of the pieces . The grain is just . Out of this world . I also made a little potpourri Bowl candle holder . I like seeing the purple in the wood . on my first turning it was still a little wet in the steam smell just like the fruit plum . very nice aroma . Think you could make something out of that small piece that flew off ? maybe put a finish on it set it next to the Bowl . That was a nice little storage for that pen made from a bolt . Us machinists get clever . back in high school , 1973 , we made pens from bolts , using the good old Bic pen . also we made cannons that could shoot , pipes you go smoke from... drove the teacher crazy . Keep on turnin' beautiful beautiful piece !

Hi Phil, A very beautiful rustic looking bowl!To me it has the look of power and majesty! I always have problems with hollowing! I'm in the process of making a new hollowing tools for some new tear drop cutters I got from Wagger Potter.One tool will be a straight tool and the other will have the bent hook end. I've also got a bunch of carbide tools I made for hollowing which work OK but I'm still not satisfied with my finish cuts with them. Maybe it's the operator and not the tool(s)??? LOL I watch Gary's videos too and found out that he was a paternmaker! I'll start making the pop corn for the next video! Tom
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Tom! Yeah, I agree, hollowing has it's pitfalls. The tear drop cutter sounds cool. I'll check them out. I can never get good finishing cuts with carbide but they do have their place, that's just not it. And no, I don't think it's the operator. They just can't be as sharp as HSS. Save some popcorn for me! Phil

Question: your round nose scraper , is it beveled on both sides, if so how do you do that.?

Yes, Louis, it's ground on both sides making it a negative rake scraper. It's just a matter of grinding whatever two degrees of bevel you want to use that add up to less than 90 degrees. I'm going to re-grind mine to 40 degrees on each side. Right now I have two different grinds and I'm constantly grinding the wrong side. Having both the same will simplify things for my old brain. That's beautiful. Do you not use super glue in the cracks? I don't think I've seen you use c.a. on anything but bark. Not to be nosey, but is there a particular reason that you don't?

Thank you, Mark! I seldom fill cracks unless it's a structural issue. If they were there when I started, I will leave them when I finish. I just believe nature wants it that way and I leave as much of nature in a piece as I can. Phil
