I prefer the french version due to how it looks. The french version is also closer to having the correct clothing for that time period.

@@classicmodernfilms7602 The 1946 version is one of the greatest but the 2014 version was terrible. The 2017 Disney version is the true modern spirit of that 1946 version, in addition of being a faithful homage and a love letter to the 1991 Disney animated original.

Depends on what time period they place the story in. The 2017 disney version is late 1700s and therefore the costuming is mostly correct, despite it being disney. This french version is supposed to be early 1800s. The clothes were correct except when shes in the castle. They were like 150 years old.........not sure why

I like the French version more. It was aesthetic af, purely magical and much more elegant than Disney's. Plus, although I love Emma Watson, I don't think she was fit for the role. On the contrary, I loved Lea Seydoux as Belle. The only thing I didn't like in the French version is that their relationship was not at all developed, but rather very rushed, whereas in Disney's they interacted much more with each other. I really loved your analysis! Good job!

World building is honestly my favorite thing, so I’d have to go with the French version as the best. The settings are stunning and the amount of magic and imagination in it is nothing Disney could compete with, in any of their films animated or live-action. Though the characters are better in the Disney version, Belle is better portrayed in the French version.

@@ajpat9620 2017 Belle PROGRESIVE??? Are you kidding me? That Belle (Emma Watson for me ), was as progressive as a piece of wood , her "inventions' are not mentioned again in the film and being as fierce and "progressive"she made that version more of a Stockholm syndrome movie than a love story. They transformed Belle into a Mary Sue , not a progressive character . In the 1991 movie (which was written by A WOMAN), Belle has more feminism in a nail than Emma Watson

I actually understand why the Beast in the Frech movie act the way he does. You forgot to mention the deer he killed wasnt just a daughter of a god, but also his wife. After the god turned his daughter into a Rose bush he cursed the prince to only turn bact once someone else other than the gods daughter falls for him. Since he feels guild from killing his wife he tries to just push people away to keep himself cursed.

Why Belle comes to love the Beast in the 2014 French version (my theory): Belle first felt affection for the Beast when they were dancing. If you watch, her face changes throughout. From appearing relatively unfeeling about it and keeping her eyes downcast, like she's just going through the motions, to looking him in the eye with a newfound softness, no doubt surprised by how comfortable she is in his arms, as if she were dancing with a human. This is further shown by her placing her head on his chest and closing her eyes, showing a sign of trust, as well as her decision to put the deal aside and just be in the moment with him. It's the first real moment of natural chemistry that Belle and the Beast have together, and Belle probably recognizes it. So when she said that he would always disgust her, I *don't* think she meant it. He wouldn't let her begin to accept him without forcing a relationship on her, and to top it off, he seemingly refused to send her home like she'd asked, so she got fed up and lashed out. But after the Beast leaves and the camera lingers on her, she looks somewhat remorseful, because try as she might, her feelings from the dance remain. So when the Beast catches up to her on the lake and tries to kiss her, you can definitely see her about to kiss him back before falling through. Later, when the Beast warns her to come back or he will die, I think he was more fearful of the God of the Forest's reaction as opposed to his own, and I believe Belle chooses to follow through on her word because she decided to give him a second chance. He not only saved her from drowning, but also took the time to ensure she didn't get hypothermia (though I wish we'd been able to actually see it). Plus, he gave her the rose as a peace offering when she awoke simply because he knew she loved them, and the vial of healing water to show that he was concerned for her safety. When the camera shows Belle's reactions to the gifts, she's clearly touched by these small acts of generosity, thus allowing herself to open up and flirt with him a bit (playfully asking which hand he wanted and then joking about him giving her a ring). To her it meant the Beast was trying to do better, and that gave Belle enough incentive to want to come back and give their relationship another shot (especially after using the water to revive her father). It's why she begs the God of the Forest to let her go back to the Beast, and why she's upset when Perducas (the lead thief) tries to kill him. Belle had only just begun to understand the Beast, so by that point, she knew she didn't want to lose him. When she & her brothers were able to save him in time, I think she was so overcome with joy and relief at the thought of them still having a chance to start over, she fell in love with him as a result. This was probably further enhanced by the Beast's much more vulnerable & heartfelt inquiry about her affection, asking if she could've loved him with more time or patience. Because they ARE able to have more time now, she believes she could indeed love him, but in that moment, she feels as though she already does, which is enough to break the spell. I'm sure Belle and the Prince spent more time connecting as a couple before getting married, and it was a significant enough story that Belle wanted to tell it to their children, probably to help emphasize the idea that people *can* choose to change for the better. 🥰 Also, at the end of the film, we can see that Belle is still wearing the necklace with the empty vial when she goes out to meet her husband. I have no doubt she held onto it because it was the first sign he had genuinely cared for her. He didn't just see her as a potential love interest anymore, which his previous gifts seemed to represent; he finally saw Belle as both a person and an individual. That change of viewpoint was the first step he took to better himself, which allowed for their relationship to truly begin to blossom. They wouldn't be where they were in the present with out it, therefore it held great significance for Belle.📿✨

When Belle felt something for the beast she tries to shut that feeling because he's claiming her and she she hates that.. she hated him, she's suppose to hate him that's why when she said that hurtful words 'digusting' line part...I think she doesn't really mean it.

Her actually starting to fall for him is so subtle that if you're not looking for it it's easy to miss it. Her acting style is really subtle, so it forced me to focus a lot on it. And I called just about all of those interactions. And it made the relationship so cute, clearly she was starting to soften after that dance. And he saw a little bit of that softness and went for the kiss. Frankly I love how aggressive he is in the French version, they never let you forget that he is in fact a scary beast. That it is taking a lot for Bell to actually fall for him. I love that it wasn't made easy for her to fall for him because it's not supposed to be easy. He's not a fluffy lovable pet he's a monster and it should show.

I honestly think the french version is much better. I watched both films and in terms of acting, Lea excelled in her role compared to Emma. The story in the french version is much more interesting and there is a back story. The world is explored much better, and the costume design really had an impression on me, all the dresses were beautiful. I liked the disney movie version, but since I already watched the animated version and this was more like a copy than a remake, it didn't feel as impactful because everything they showed I had already seen in the animation previously. I am more emotionally connected to the Disney remake though, since it reminds me of the animation and my childhood, but apart from that it's not as special. Also the movie was over hyped... So that in a way affected my opinion on the movie beforehand. I prefer the french movie because it takes a fresh look into the famous tale, the plot is interesting and the backstory was something new. Although the romance was not there as much as in the other movies, I'm pretty sure it was intended that way, in real life it would have been like that, and I think that's what they were trying to portray, instead of the fairytale romance that is always depicted in the Disney movies. P.S: also I think Lea is more pretty, she is beautiful in my opinion, the first time I watched the movie I had an instant crush on her, just thinking about her makes me fangirl so much haha. Emma is also very pretty, but not as pretty as the other actress, this is just my preference and my taste.... So don't get too offended

This is the second time I watched this video. I prefer the new French film myself when it comes to the remakes. I am just at the point where you talk about if Belle's mother had left her with her none father. And in the ORIGINAL novel, Belle was actually not her father's child. Her mother was fairy who swapped Belle with (Maurice's) child who died to I think protect her. If Maurice had somehow found out about it and kept it from Belle it would change a lot. That would be have been both new and a nice nod to the novel all versions are based on. (they would need to cut out the part where Belle's parentage makes her and the beast cousins - it was a thing at the time for royalty), but I think it could have worked. This was a really good review :)

Thank you for the reply. And yes the original is fascinating. Anyway, I agree the romance in the new one French one isn't that good which is a shame because there is one scene I think that hints at what could have been. When the beast tries to give her the water he says, "give me your hand". She smiles and plays with him a little hiding her hands behind her back and asking "which one?" It's not a big moment, but a small tease at what could have been. Such a shame because I think the actors actually have good chemistry in some scenes. I know you mentioned you like the reason for the beast being cursed (and I do too), but I am curious what do you think of the prince before he got cursed? Because I think this is one story where the prince is (for the most part) a happy and liked man. It's his own need and unwillingness to not let the "treasure" go that is his downfall.

What's so fustrating about the 2014 version is it was SO close to being a great adaptation of the original Villeneuve fairytale. We need more adaptations of the original fairytales. I adore Disney but they have such a monopoly on fairytales the general public view their versions as the definititve ones. I like the fact that in the 2014 one there is a slight sexual attraction/tension between Belle and the Beast. Part of metaphor of the story is it's arguably about a woman (who like many women at the time) is put into an arranged marriage and learning to love her husband seeing past the fearful parts of marrying someone she didn't know that well, becoming an adult coming to see her husband as both a romantic and sexual partner. I like that it plays from the original tale with the idea of dreams and seeing into the past and the darker side of magic. But I think it gets bogged down with trying to balance the darker more adult tone with silly things to appeal to a younger audience like the puppies, the silly subplot about the brother and his friend searching for treasure. In the 1946 version in that addition works better because the character of Avenant, the friend, is the counterpoint to the Beast. Ugly on the inside, hadsome on the outside and Beauty is intially attracted to him. Also as you rightly said in the 2014 one Beauty and the Beast's relationship doesn't get enough time to develop. BUT I do love the twist at the end that Belle is the mother telling the children the story and the Beast is the father coming home from work. I really hope someone eventually does an more direct Villenueve adaptation. One thing that I think a big screen adaptation of the story could lean into is the fact that Belle nightly has dreams of the Beast in human form and falls in love with him while he in turn tells her not to be decieved by appearences. It's an interesting take on a love triangle. There's also this whole backstory of why the Prince is turned into a beast including that his fairy tutor fell in love with him and when he rejected her she spitefully turned him into a beast. In this time with metoo and everything how relevant would it be to have a story of someone who is essentially the victim of sexual abuse. And how that has scarred them turning them into a literal monster someone being able to love them helps them overcome that. There's so much potential there. It's that and a more original take on the Snow Queen that I'd love to see done.

You should have also included 2014 Italian version with Alessandro Preziosi, the most realistic one to date & probably the best live action so far. French version has way better ballroom dance & great looking Beast, cuz Vincent Cassel wore full costume, unlike Dan Stevens who wore robotic suit. Disney is nostalgic only for music & enchanted objects (which didn't exist in original writing). I like both, but French one is superior, after all its their fairytale and they know how to make it better than Usa. Only thing thats missing in french is relationship growth (thats why Italian is the best) PS Anne Hathaway or Emmy Rossum would have been way better choice for Belle than Emma

I'm happy that you favor the French version slightly over the other. Just today I searched for the original story. Of the recent two/three movies, the French version is the most faithful. My first exposure to the Beauty and the Beast story was seeing the Disney animated version when it was release. The musical parts came across as part of the story. Then 9 months ago I saw the 2014 French version, which gave me a totally different view on the story. Plus I thought the Beast's make-up was more believable than the new Disney version. Oh those eyes. I started to watch the recent live action Disney version but had to stop watching it. I could not tolerate the breaking into a song and dance so often as they did. It interrupted the flow of the story. It felt like it was forced into the story for the sole purpose of promoting a Broadway musical production version of the movie. Get rid of the Broadway musical stuff and I might have liked the new Disney version.

The Beast in the French version is soooo aggressive and problematic... (and as a French person, I really tried to like the movie but couldn’t get past the toxic behavior of the Beast)... In the other versions, the beast was meant to be scary at first, maybe accidentally brutal/beastly (obviously) but in the French version, he’s straight up talking to Belle like she was dirt at the beginning and kept being aggressive over and over agin throughout the movie. This ruined the movie for me.

The 2017 version wasn't a mess. It added layers within the story, fixed the character motivations, and progressed the character development as well fixing the plotholes that the 1991 animated original have. Furthermore, it was a marvelous technical success. Emma Watson's dress isn't fucking awful. It was seamless and authentic, and the decision for her of not wearing a corset was a brillant move, which makes her version of Belle as progressive and defined it as a modern one. Even the castle was also authentic and real.

The Disney animated version I consider it to be entertaining and fun. The live remake was OK, but not better then the animated version. I prefer the French version as it is the closest to the original story and obviously for the wardrobe, locations and scenery, it is more slow paced an may drag at times a bit, after all the book is not a cheerful story with singing and comedy, is drama, is dark including the Beast.

I will always love animated beauty and the beast It's my favorite but I prefer French version over the Disney remake, the French version wasn't copying the dialogues from the original and taking some different directions in the story mostly It was trying to adapt the original story book before Disney released it and I love how we got to explore different things in the palace and feeling the magic of the story differently and Belle's dress was Astonishing as it should compared to the Disney remake, I also love the visuals and how aesthetic this film was. One thing I felt like this film was lacking is the development relationship between belle and the beast cause it was rushed, when belle left to see her father I felt like "she has to spend more time with the beast". But even though you kinda feel more of the chemistry between Belle and the beast than the other remake we had.

I would maybe prefer the Disney version, but Emma... I'm sorry 😄 Come on, she's not Belle, she's like a skinny maximalist-teenager boy, who appreciates only her own ideas and spits on the others with her bored unemotional face. A good actress can be very different. Emma doesn't play Belle, but herself. Real Belle was strong because she wasn't afraid of her faith and saved her family. Emma with her overfeministic mood refuses to wear corset (18th century!!), has oily hair and looks at men and simple people with disgust, because she's such a "progressive woman". Come on. And French version is so realistic, Belle is a real Belle from 18th century, very strong, but loving, feminine, soft and absolutely beautiful. Just my modest opinion which you may disagree, I don't insist 😄

Honestly, since i grew up watching the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast, i only new that haters-to-lovers plotline. But then i read the original story from Charles Perrault, the french author, and realised that actually Disney's version was made more delicate than the original one. So, from the bits and pieces i've watched of the french remake in this video, trailer and so on, i must say the plot comes closer to the original story written by Perrault. Also, unpopular opinion, although i like Emma Watson as an actor, when i saw that she was Belle, i wasn't overjoyed, and in the movie i didn't really catch those Belle vibes. Don't know if I'm making sens.
@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose
@DJtheBlack-RibbonedRose 4 жыл бұрын
Don't worry, you make sense. The main Beauty and the Beast I grew up with, besides the Disney film, was the Cannon Movie Tales version from 1986. It was more closely adapted to the French story (Villeneuve's original and more complicated version). Because of that, I quickly became accustomed to plot points such as Beauty going to the Beast because of a stolen rose, him being kind to her automatically and asking for her hand every night, and the fact that she unknowingly dreamt of him in his human form. Also, it contained its own musical numbers, so that helped :). So even though I watched this version and the Disney film (or more accurately, its midquel, Enchanted Christmas), I was able to appreciate both versions as different yet enjoyable takes on the tale. Though I will say this: I appreciate the Disney film for taking away the "asking for marriage" plot point. Mainly just because it always makes me feel so bad for both characters. The Beast keeps hoping Belle's feelings have changed for him, only to have his hopes constantly dashed until he's on his freaking deathbed, while Belle sees him only as a friend and doesn't recognize her growing love for him until he nearly dies in her arms. Like wow, talk about awful experiences from both sides. The weight of this plot point is especially apparent in the Cocteau film, where Belle is a bit more resistant to the kind-hearted yet passive-aggressive Beast than most. (Like Willie said, French balls. Similar to Lea Seydoux, Josette Day's Belle wasn't afraid to express how she felt. She told the Beast to his face that he could keep proposing but she wasn't going to change her mind, she got irritated with him when he showed up late for dinner or in her room unexpectedly, and was even willing to encourage the Beast to embrace his animal nature so that he would live. Willie has a great review of that film, you should check it out if you haven't already).

Yesterday i watched the french version. It wasn't perfect but far better than the Disney remake (though i liked the animated beast's interaction with belle better, the french one didn't seem to respect her boundaries far worse but beyond that it felt like a better remake and maybe more accurate to the original tale(nothing wrong with not being accurate if it's well done like the animated Disney film but seems a nice detail). This belle was blonde yet i didn't have any issues with it: why? Well first it's not the Disney adaptation but an independent one, and second her hair color is irrelevant to the plot. These days there's this polemic with the little mermaid remake and this is a perfect example of the difference : since it's not based in a previous film of the same studio belle can look any way and since it's an European historical oriented tale it makes sense for royalty or nobles to be super pale, remember Europe was super racist in the past. Agreeing or disagreeing with a character appearance doesn't make you racist as Disney is trying to imply as an excuse for his laziness to produce new stories.

In my mind, I feel like a big reason for this seems to be that the U.S. critics think Gans' movie relies more on spectacle than story, and they have a hard time seeing the relationship between Belle and the Beast. I certainly can't blame them, because upon first viewing, I too loved the visuals and the costumes, but struggled to support the relationship, which is the core of the story. But I put my movie critical skills to work and analyzed the relationship more deeply and came to a conclusion on how Belle's feelings for the Beast changed so drastically. Trust me, it REALLY enhanced my enjoyment of the film, allowing to become one of my favorite adaptations. Shame some of the professionals couldn't handle it the way I did. 😆

In the French version you have to think deeper. How the hell Belle fell in love with the Beast is a short period of time. Well, you have to consider the Nymph that haunts Belle's dream. Through the dreams she shows what the real man inside the Beast she really loves. It is the Nymphs undying love that she will do all she can to save the Beast for his eternal curse, I believe this is how Belle come around. They could have explored it more in the movie. But they rely a lot on symbolism connections with the Roses (Belle's favorite, not growing on the cottage, the reason of the demise, the castle full of roses, the tree that will destroy and at the end, roses start growing around Belle's cottage) and the phrase "More than Life itself" was spoken more than three times connects back to the Rose for the Beast. Regardless, I had been continually watching this after I was disappointed with Disney's remake.

The Beast from the 2014 French version had a lot of potential, it's a shame the movie spent more time on his backstory than his actual development. He starts off as predatory (which nicely ties with his obsession with hunting that got him cursed in the first place), so I would've loved to see him evolve and mellow down next to Belle. Especially because Belle has such a profound love and respect for nature that contrasts with his demeanor. The fact that he eventually settles down in her dream cottage house and seems content with his new lifestyle doesn't feel earned. We needed to see him learn something.

It was a story for young girls who were prepared to marry later a old man they didn't love and didn't choose. A fairytale is never romantic. Only in the Disney versions.

I'm not very fond of Emma Watson, but when I heard that she will play the role I gave her credits, it felt like a good fit with her character and I was preparing to fall in love with her even if it's against my will. But it was really bad and I'm even not about singing! She looked bad, as if all hair and makeup she was doing within 5 min in the morning, not having time to wash her hair and give it shape. There are tones of cosplay girls who look much more like Belle and Emma herself is much more beautiful on any of her fotoshoots! What went wrong? Running out of millions when they needed to hire a stylist?! And thеn that Underplayed performance!!! She was just BORING! No energy or sparkle! If it was a debut of an unknown actress I would say that with this movie she has ruined her career! Comparing to this, the French version was at least aesthetically very beautiful. But the biggest problem of both remakes is NO CHEMISTRY!!!How can it happen when the whole plot of the movie is a Love Story?! "The moment of the kiss" - the most romantic moment when my heart needs to tremble and I need to feel goosebumps and all the love of the world..... is the moment when I feel almost repulsive because 2 unknown people without chemistry are forced to kiss each other and pretend that it's good on camera. It doesn't matter how many magic creatures will dance in the movie, a failed love story and kiss are your magicbreakers!

Sure there are many people who like her performance. As for myself I just know how it is to be charismatic, how to "want adventure in the big wide somewhere" with All your heart, how to make the whole street of lanterns shine from your brightness and strength of your dream! And I know many girls whom you cannot stop watching, not because they are directly beautiful, but because there is this shining sun inside them, the inspiration and dreamingness in every move. Why the whole village, Gaston and Beast are singing about a bookworm? Because she has an inner fire which attracts them! And that's what makes her personality, that's what makes her Belle! For me this performance was just Underplayed. And because it was underplayed and totally copied from original I would even call it sterile. (which is funny if to note that all the supporting staff have made their job great. There is something wrong with the movie where to watch the animated objects is more funny than the main character and love story)

I would just like to say that i have a theory that in the french version belle was slowly being turned into the beasts ex wife (a fairy)... there’s a scene where everytime she sleeps she is being circled by glittery gold giving her dreams of the past making her know who the beast was. And also at the part where she was cut (close to the ending scene) her blood drop to the ground then instantly a rose suddenly bloomed from where the blood landed (Sorry for the bad english its not my first language)

For a record she's no professional singer. She's an actress. She can DEFINITELY sing just like everyone else. Furthermore, any actress without singing experience can even sing. Just look onto Kate Winslet and Audrey Hepburn. They don't have singing experience prior to them taking that first singing of theirs, but they've done with so much practice and dedication and that description can be best described on how Emma Watson prepared that for that role.

@@greyblueme9711 Emma didn't use or rely on autotune, as there's no proof of any of that. She had to spent a lot of time prior filming on training on her singing vocals with the original actress of the 1991 film, Paige O'Hara,. Plus, she even authentically recorded her singing on a recording studio with the composer, Alan Menken.

I do prefer the French version, but, as you said, it was a bit boring. I think what saved it for me was the stunning visuals and Léa Seydoux's subtle acting style. It really makes you pay attention to her facial expressions and little gestures. It also definitely felt more like a traditional fairy tale, especially with the addition of an angry nature god. I love that they didn't follow the 1946 version too closely and were NOT afraid to try exploring their characters and environments more. Did all of those experiments work out? Not really, but it made for a really pretty movie. I also watched this movie in dub and then in sub and I have to say that the... interesting dub makes it a little less boring lol. The movie does a good job of still feeling connected to its predecessor but differentiating itself in MANY different ways. One example is the way they change the focus on her family and their role in the story. I think they share the same names, but their situation and involvement in Belle's life is very different. I love the story of Beauty and the Beast because it's actually very simple, with very loose boundaries which allows for so many different takes on the story. You could add new character dynamics or side characters and it won't (or shouldn't depending on what kind of a writer you are) affect the necessary outline: Belle/Beauty meets a prince cursed to be a Beast and the two eventually fall in love which breaks the spell. I love stories like that. Ones that can be molded into many different forms without losing the essential story. Which is the main reason why I don't really like the Disney remake. The Disney remake relies too closely on the 2D animated film and doesn't really try new things, save for a few score changes. But even those changes didn't feel like they had a lot of heart in them. You talked about how Belle's backstory didn't really add anything, which is a perfect example. Personally, I think the song Evermore is a good song by itself, but it doesn't really need to be there. Sure it gives the Beast more characterization and the audience gets more of a look at what he's going through, but we see that MANY other times in the movie. It feels weird to have both. It's mainly there to pad out time and to give the prince character a song, which is a newfound interest Disney seems to have in these remakes. I would have liked the remake a bit more if they tried harder to explore what they can do with this very versatile story, instead of trying something only to back out and it ends up adding nothing but more runtime

I've not seen either of the Disney versions but I think the 2014 remake of the Cocteau version is awful. It does, at least, try some new ground, I suppose, but I'm uncomfortable with Beast forcing his 'love' upon Belle; he is hard to empathise with in any way and she is hard to believe in. For me the original is flawless. Tenesse Williams called it the most magical film of all time. My french mother introduced me to it. Every year I find a night cold and stormy enough to cuddle up with my dog to be carried away by it. Salutations molt cordials des de la Comunitat Valenciana.

Alex Piedmont thanks for your comment. Yeah as I mentioned the romance is so bitter from both sides to buy into it. The classic French version is probably one of my favorite romance movies. It is so enchanting and endearing when the beast lets her go. Plus the cinematography is so great with its gothic heavy shadows.

Yeah, and the "beast" when he turns in to a man looks like he's 50 years old, not to mention ugly af for the young and beautiful belle. The French film is low key rapey when he says "you shall be mine!" all angry when belle is rightfully horrified by him. Also, they add in extra stuff that just wasn't necessary like those weird looking dogs , moving giant statues and that weird twist with the wife he had before being a forest nymph or something- like wtf? The American movie is sweeter and just plain better, in my humble opinion.

Amelia Valdovinos I get and I understand. I’m more entertained by the Disney remake version than the new French version because while it looks gorgeous it is boring. When the beast said does words, that’s when I said Im done. He is a dick, he is possessive, I don’t care that he is cursed that was a dick thing to say even when Belle replied negatively against him. So like I said both versions have their own problems.

I've watched this video several times now, and I must say, this is a really fantastic video! I really like the points you made about the differences between how remakes/reiterations of stories can be done, and how you broke down and compared various elements between the Disney and French films as you talked about what you preferred. Since I was a kid, Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite fairytale/motif, so there's no "definitive" version to me. I'm open to any sort of re-telling of the story, so long as I'm invested in both the narrative and relationship between the titular characters. Because of that, I went into the Disney remake with an open mind, and overall, I enjoyed it. I even teared up during the Beast's "Evermore" performance and the Enchanted Objects losing their enchantment! I can certainly see that it has issues, and I will say the atmosphere is much different in live-action than in animation, but I don't outright hate it like so many others do. The French film I only discovered recently, and though the only version I was able to watch was its later English dub, it didn't take away from the experience. The Beast's world felt very much like a fantasy world, and the audience is exploring it as much as Belle is, what with its gorgeous visuals and much more minimal use of CGI. The costumes were fantastic, but undoubtedly, my favorites would have to be the four ballgowns that Belle wears during her time at the castle. I loved the new take on why the Beast transformed, and how it was told through Belle's dreams (which is technically an established element in the Villeneuve tale; it's been used in other version as well as this one). And overall, I really enjoyed the performances of Lea Seydoux and Vincent Cassel as the titular characters. Lea especially has since become one of my favorite "Beauty" interpretations, due to her great balance of defiance and vulnerability. Watching this movie for the first time, I will def. say that what bogged it down for me was the lack of focus on the romance. I'm all for an enemies-to-lovers story, because it can make for great character development, but it has to be done in a way that's believable, and I didn't feel that was the case in Christophe Gans' film. However, the more I watched it, the more I began to theorize as to what made Belle love the Beast (I'll write it in a separate comment), which made my love for the film grow. Plus, I love the framing device of how it's Belle telling hers and the Prince's kids a bedtime story, though we as the audience know that they're really hearing the story of how their parents met, which I thought was a unique idea. At the end of the day, I love both of these films. They are both 21st century re-telling's of Beauty and the Beast that I really enjoyed watching. And I will say that the 2017 Disney remake does a better job at relaying the development of the romance instead of making me work for it and come up with it on my own. But if I had to choose, I'd probably go with the 2014 French film as the better movie; from a visual and technical standpoint, and for the unique ideas that help separate it from other versions. Because if you're going to take an old story and put your own spin on it, it's important to have elements that help it stand out as its own adaptation, and I feel like the French remake does that better than the Disney remake.

One thing the frech version did better is making the audience to actually look forward to the Beast human form final transformation, because you have known him as a human and watch him do things before as such, so when the end happens, you feel that he's BACK. Not everything has to be a surprise! To me it was the least "give-back-my-beast" of them all (partially because Cassell is not a charming prince either, but a more "beastly" one 😂)
