If this is an old classmate the least he could do is bring you some kolduny, kindziukas, chebureki, potato pancakes or especially a sliced pigs ear for your appetite you work up knocking down his dams. Maybe even fry up some beaver tail. Or he could just buy you a 6 pack of your favorite adult beverage. This dam looked like a lot of labor today, so I know you were hungry when you finished. No McDonald's hamburgers, get real warm, high caloric, food after working hard in the cold. Good job on the dam today. And of course Roberta did a decent editing job with only a couple of glitches.

Take care in keeping your hands warm and dry (and everything else too, especially your feet when standing in that icy water). Both of mine suffered frostbite years ago, and now are very susceptible to pain when they get cold. I hope that never happens to you; it can make winter very unpleasant. Edit: The drone overflight video was very interesting; you could really see how much the water level had dropped by seeing where the ice still clung to the banks of the channel. Plus, the landscape was beautiful, with the contrast between the green fields, the grey of the bare trees, and the yellowing of the brush next to the channel.

This looked like much harder work than normal. One can usually tell if you are digging through sand, clay, rotten wood or branches but it sounded as though you were hitting rocks but also tree roots. These can be very strong and given the size of the trees growing on the dam, you deserve a medal! I hope you had something warming afterwards - do you have sloe gin in Lithuania. Sloe berries left for a year in gin turn it red and with sugar added, it makes a winter warmer! All from the hedgerows!

The holes are from beavers tunnelling into the bank for their dens. We had the same issue when the beavers damned up the creeks near our fields, especially the creeks with high banks.
@boaz2001
@boaz2001 7 ай бұрын
So then they don't build a lodge to live in?
@raymondheckard234
@raymondheckard234 7 ай бұрын
@@boaz2001 it all depend on the the nature of the beaver pond, if is a shallow creek or stream the dam up and it floods a large area of land then they will build a lodge if there is enough woodland to fell trees for it. But in the case of a high bank creek, the will dig into the bank of the creek below the water line and dig our a massive bank lodge.. I was plowing a field when I was a teen and was about 3 to 4 meter from the creek, and the rear tractor tire broke through the ceiling of the beavers bank lodge and I thought the tractor was going to flip when it happened. During trapping season, we would locate their entrances to their bank lodge in the high bank of the creek, and set traps. The lodges are built similar to the dams they build, sticks , grass, rocks and mud. Beavers will transport mud from their bank lodges the dig to build the dam, or will take the mud out of the bottom of the creek The following is from Beaver Solutions : Beavers build and maintain houses called lodges. There are two main types, the conical lodge and the bank lodge. The most recognized type is the conical shaped dwelling surrounded by water. It is made from sticks, mud and rocks. One of the primary reasons beavers build dams is to surround their lodge with water for protection from predators. The second type of lodge is the bank lodge. It is typically excavated into the bank of a large stream, river, or lake where the water is too deep or fast moving to build the classic conical lodge. I hope this answered your question. When I was trapping back in the late 1970 for gas money in high school, I actually trapped more beavers in the bank lodge entrances, that I did on beavers dam entrances, because bank lodges was more prevalent.
@Beautifulclouds60
@Beautifulclouds60 7 ай бұрын
@@boaz2001 I have read there are bank beavers. They dig into the banks of a river and dig out dens in them instead of building a lodge. Maybe they are bank beavers.

🤔 if you can I would cut a line in the back wall of the beaver dam with the shovel 🤔 you don't have to dig the mud out just make a little pocket where water can get behind the dam 🤔 then go back to the front and hack away at the bottom of the dam like you usually do I think you'll see better results with the claps 😘 it's just a suggestion to hopefully cut out some of the labor cuz that's hard work 🙈😘

Since the weather is turning, and making it harder to actually open dams you might considering doing an experiment with a siphon. This way you can drain a flooded area without having to put on your wader boots AND still make an entertaining video.
