Preferring to eat the fresh food first makes sense, because the twigs will keep good if he leaves them, but he’s not willing to risk his fresh produce spoiling before he can eat it. Of course, he probably doesn’t think exactly that, it’s probably guided by beaver instinct that knows that twigs are storable food.

Great to see breakfast for the most famous beaver on the Internet! Watching the animals on Animal Wonders is always educational and informative, to go along with the animals' off-the-scale cuteness. I understand the lesson about scattering Huckleberry's veggies so that he can forage for them, just as he would in the wild. I have adopted a bunny, originally Easter purchase by the young family next door. He's eight months old, and doing great on Timothy Hay, feed pellets from the local pet supply store, and lots of love. He has a big dog crate as his "little house", but I let him free roam almost all the time, after he taught me the need to bunny-proof the house, especially electrical cords, which he imagines are roots growing into his den. I was amazed to learn that rabbits were only domesticated around 1,500 years ago, so biologically and behaviorally, they must be a lot closer to their wild ancestral type in the highlands of Spain and France than our domestic cats and dogs, domesticated thousands of years earlier. I try to be mindful of his evolutionary past in my care for him, keeping his temperature, diet, and other environmental factors in the range that his ancestors evolved in. But, that being said, he's clear in communicating with me that he also shows his recent history of evolution under domestication... and that includes snuggles and petting! I love the science and the love for animals that come out in equal measure in these videos. Thank you, Huckleberry, Jessi, and Animal Wonders Montana, for all that you teach us, and we'll see you in the next video!

Does huckleberry have a secured pond/pool that he can go in? The little stream/pond that kenan from camp kenan made for his monitor (I think that's what he is) is really cool and natural looking. I bet huckleberry would benefit from such enrichment
@animalwondersmontana3 жыл бұрын
Oh, I'm sure Huckleberry would love to mess about in there! So much fun and so much chaos/destruction would ensue! One of the biggest challenges of caring for semi aquatic species in a cold environment like Montana, is that it's often below freezing temperatures 4 months out of the year, so keeping the water source not frozen so we can clean it daily is a must. Beavers pee and poop in their water multiple times a day. Kenan lives in Florida and monitor lizards don't soil their water as often as beavers do, which makes it much easier to give them a cool water feature 🙂
@parisinthe30sx3 жыл бұрын
@@animalwondersmontana ohh that makes sense. I didn't even think about the weather. I'm curious about parsnip, since in his natural range, Cicuta sp. appears but parsnip doesn't, and humans have been known to confuse the two, until eating the first results in painful death. Is the difference something he could smell, or his family would have taught him in the wild?

I know the juicy bits didn't go to waste, so who did Huckleberry share his breakfast with? Also, why would those bits have been bad for him?
@animalwondersmontana3 жыл бұрын
The ends contain a bit too much water for Huckleberry. He would happily munch them down and it could cause some mild gi discomfort or even diarrhea, which can lead to more serious issues in beavers. So, we try to prevent that from happening. The ends are perfectly good for other animals that don't have the sensitive gut balance of beavers, so we shared them around to Seraphina the fox, Ringo the raccoon, and the cavies and guinea pig herd!

Doesn’t huckleberry get lonely at night The other videos make it look like they need companionship. Just asking
@animalwondersmontana Жыл бұрын
Beavers are a very social species, so we've been keeping an eye out for any potential companions that could be compatible with Huckleberry. We did try to introduce him to a younger female in 2021 who was orphaned, and he did not accept her. She went to another animal facility to live with another beaver who did accept her as his companion. The reality of introducing individuals usually isn't as easy as it sounds. In the wild, they might meet many others and reject a dozen before finding one they want to bond with. It's a very challenging undertaking, but we haven't given up!

Why in captivity do ppl make animals food so specific and perfect ? When in the wild they would be eating w.e he could find . Not Huck or animal wanders specifically, but a large percent of ppl in the animal trade
@catzkeet48603 жыл бұрын
Because in the wild he would not be eating “what he could find”. He would be CHOOSING what to eat. Also, in the wild animals may have a taste for certain things that aren’t in common supply, like maybe sugar or sweetness. This is fine in the wild where they can’t overindulge, but in captivity where owners/carers supply the food, it’s easy to oversupply things that the animal loves cos they like them, but they may not be the best things for a base diet. Besides which, if we take an animal into captivity, we are responsible for its care and that means providing the best diet we can.
@thebermudaI3 жыл бұрын
The other reply to you is very good, but I wanted to add: I've seen a lot of animal rehabbers post about how people will "rescue" rabbits, birds, squirrels, etc, and try to feed them themselves, and after even just a couple of days the animals will be emaciated and malnourished. This is why animal rehabbers often beg the public to take rescued animals to qualified animal caretakers immediately. Diet is really important.
