My Mom came home from the super market with an LP on Bethlehem records with Sahib Shihab and Howard McGhee. I was 14-15. I wore it out! I am 76. This is great, Thank you!

I first heard a Howard McGhee solo when I was 6 in 1966, when my father purchased Perdido/Mordido JATP on Verve's VSP label. My father loved JATP and passed that off one me. But, he did like BeBop too, so Dizzy Gillespie and Fats Navarro and McGhee were my personal favorites on Trumpet, along with Roy Eldridge and Clark Terry (Fluegelhorn). My father played Trumpet, but I preferred to play Tenor Sax. These recordings bring back memories of my childhood and my father. Thanks so much!

This is fantastic. I've been looking for interviews and everything else on my pop. Thanks for publishing the gold. Wish you could've continued it. He had a lot to offer up.

Oh man, Howard was your dad? Great player - the stuff he did with Fats Navarro was just beautiful. Thans to Michael for putting this up..

Hi bootsmcghee. I knew your Dad when I was a kid, growing up in Cocoa, Florida in the late 60's and 70's. My Dad hosted a few jazz concerts on the east coast of Florida where Howard played and he ended up staying with us several times when he was touring. He was an amazing musician and a great man. He was very kind to me and my family. He tried to show me how to play trumpet, despite my braces, which made it difficult!!

Does anybody know who plays the tenor in the Slim Gaillard number around 22:30? Thanks for posting this gem.

You sure it was 1988? Numerous references state that Howard McGhee died in 1987.
