What’s the best frickin’ laser beam to attach to a shark’s head? Kyle gets his evil doctorate.

I think the secret is right in front of us. In Goldmember, when Scott finally gets Dr. Evil his laser sharks, it demonstrates its power by sticking its head out of the water and blasting an anonymous henchman. As you mentioned, lasers travel a lot more efficiently through air, so a laser weapon makes a lot more sense as a weapon for sharks to attack enemies that are out of their reach, ie out of the water. And this actually fits, since great white sharks are known for their tendency to stick their head out of their water so that they can track the position of seals on the shoreline. They even have specialized eyes that allow them to see just as well in air as in water. Sharks are already deadly enough in the water without lasers, but can't do much to victims that are still on land. A laser would be a dastardly solution to this limitation. Of course, if this is the purpose of the laser, then it probably would make more sense to use a more energy efficient weapon, like a bullet, since bullets don't travel very well in water but quite well in air. Or maybe even a grappling hook so the shark can pull its victim into its reach. I imagine besides the obvious shock factor of using a laser weapon, as well as the chance to use cool future tech, a laser would have one final benefit. It does have limited range in water, but then again, it doesn't need much range. A shark's jaws have a range of 0 and are still pretty dangerous. Instead of using the beam itself as a weapon underwater, the shark could use the laser at short range to disorient and intimidate its victim, and most importantly, using the heating of the water to injure and cook its next meal.
@jlokison4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but if it's a blue/green laser not only can it snipe targets above water it can still hit things under water that are trying to escape its teeth. Shark cages and diver propulsion systems commonly used by secret agents will not protect someone from a laser shark. Add some sort of shark mind control, a laser com system, some low light or light amp cammeras, and a phased array sonar system and one of your higher level minions can control an entire shiver of sharks from within the submarine mobile lair.
@shleed4 жыл бұрын
This was what I was thinking as well. Another benefit of a laser shark is the ability to easily cool the laser. Lasers can get quite hot, so they often need large heat sinks/cooling systems. A shark could fire at a target above water, then go back down to let the laser cool in the water, then go back up and repeat. This would allow the laser to be lighter, because it wouldn't need as large of a heat sink/cooling system. This way, you could get a more powerful laser for less weight.

You forgot the best part of a L.A.S.E.R, reloading. While bullets might be more efficient in terms of energy, sharks have a distinct lack of thumbs to reload a gun with ammunition thus making a weapon that doesn't need to reload a big bonus. Otherwise I completely agree.

@defies46264 жыл бұрын
Correct. The diffusion mentioned in the episode would be, if the laser is powerful enough to be an effective weapon, released in the form of a localized thermal bloom. As he mentioned, water would create a superheated steam cavity along the path of the laser. This would, of course, Kill The Fish (do not kill da fish). A laser powerful enough to be a weapon that could easily kill a person or a target quickly would be in the tens of kilowatts (40 or more for a person over a few seconds) to up to about a megawatt to be effective. Besides the fact that the power system would slow the shark down, you run into the issue that a laser kills a person by, well, effectively flash-microwaving them (in non-organic targets, causing a small patch to melt through to something thermal sensitive or explode from dumping thermal energy into it. In organic targets, the cells literally flash boil and go off like microscopic popcorn causing horrific, hard to heal wounds if not outright exploding and blowing off limbs rather... yeah, laser weapons are bad and if we could make man-portable ones you really shouldn't because it would kind of be a war crime). So, yeah, your shark would accidentally kill itself by either accidentally boiling it's face off, causing a localized cavitation event (mantis shrimp'ing itself), or it's using it's laser to blind and/or communicate for maximum... Evil. Granted, you could use frickin' laser sharks as kamikaze drones with great effectiveness, but in that case you could just strap a torpedo to them and blow up an area with a couple of dozen pounds of high explosives.

Hey Kyle! Huge fan of the show! This episode hit on one of my favorite topics, and that is how sharks are actually far more complex than we give them credit for. On that note, I have an idea for another use for the shark-mounted laser. Island security. Great White sharks have been observed spyhopping, sticking their head above the water 's surface to take a look at objects or creatures that aren't immersed. Newer studies have also shown that the Great White shows inquisitive and social behavior on the level of a wolf or dog. I feel like a combination of these two would be where the best results would happen. Train a pack or two of toothy-water-doggos to defend your base against amphibious assault. To teach them, you could set a massive amount of chum or meat on a boat with a few holes drilled into the hull, enough to leak but not sink. The blood would get the sharks curiosity, and once they are nearby, you strike the boat with a laser from above the surface. Once they make the connection that their new head-beams can sink the boat and get the tasty tasty (and now cooked!) meats, but not from below the surface, just reinforce that behavior. Train them like you would a pack of dogs learning a task. Sink a couple empty boats without the laser, and then sink another meat-filled boat by hitting it with a laser. Condition them to associate the sinking of a boat via laser with tasty treats. Then you just send out a meat-filled boat every week or so for the sharks to sink themselves. Regular feeding will keep them nearby instead of spreading out like apex predators usually do, and you could even vary the engine types on the boats to teach them to recognize various boat types. Then you just beef up the air defenses of your island base. Then the meddling.... interlopers, scan the base, see massive air defenses but little to no surface-level sea defense and think you are overconfident in your defense grid. They attempt a covert landing via a small boat and your newly trained water-doggos sink it, which would leave the interlopers with no option but to get in the water. Once immersed, the giant toothy good boys don't need to utilize their lasers, they could just use what evolution gave them.

this is a great and fun channel! love the bun Kyle! I think you're forgetting 2 things: first, if you're using the weapon laser scheme, you forget that with any powerful enough laser, there's gonna be a lot of heat, and even under water, this heat will hurt your sharks rendering them useless. second you are forgetting totally of the biological component, the sharks themselves; most shark species don't attack without provocation and in normal conditions they attack from beneath their prey, so the attack could not be as effective as the horizontal attack that your graphics suggest. my advise for you (if you were a master super villain) is, go for a bull shark (carcharhinus leucas), it can survive in both fresh and salty waters and have enough size to support a good-size laser device attached to their bodies, extra point because is not threatened specie.

Hey Kyle, love the show. I'm currently bingeing it. Just a couple of thoughts: You talked about the range issues lasers would have underwater and how you would already be too close the shark by the time it was usefully lethal. However in the first movie they didnt have sharks with freakin laser beams attached to their heads, they had genetically altered seabass. I would say a 30 foot kill range is more than sufficient for a fish as small as a seabass and it could help them immobilize prey as they closed in. Secondly, the fish tank in both the first and third movies appear to have an approximate radius of around 30 feet (plus or minus) also lending credibility to your theory of range underwater. Good work, love the content. You should do more series!

sometimes the villain's techniques are more interesting than the "hero's" fumbling ways of getting out of them.

You could also train the sharks to think of anything the light is shining on as food. Give the laser a targeting system that always shines on the shark food when you feed them but is also programmed to shine on your enemies. The laser might also be programmed to only work when out of the water. So the sharks can get targets dangling over your death trap, and not yet in the water.

Hey Kyle, two things. Sharks could quickly surface to blast unsuspecting heroes off the deck of the super boat, bypassing the beam through water. They could also use the laser cutter to cut holes in the hull of said boat to sink it. Love the show. Manbun 2020

Lmao. I love how your villain's name is ManBun

This gave me a video idea: the different colours of blood in media (green/blue/yellow etc.) and what their composition would need to be to appear the way they do for us?

Kyle, I've realized that you're not a supervillian, but you're training supervillians for some nefarious purpose. Love your videos!

The bit where Kyle beeped the Microwave and turned it into a graph made me laugh. Not just air out my nostrils like laughing at an internet funny, but an actual laugh. Nice.

Sharks, that fire small torpedoes, and those torpedoes carry laser warheads.

Additionally, why use visible light lasers to have sharks communicate, which could conceivably by monitored by the glows they make, when electromagnetic signals in other parts of the spectrum can be detected by hammerheads? Just train a bunch of those

The sharks wouldn’t necessarily need a laser interpreting device to receive and interpret information sent by other shiver members. Sharks have specialised sensing organs called ampullae of Lorenzini that can detect electric and magnetic fields in water. Thus, since lasers are electromagnetic waves, a product of electric and magnetic fields, these biological devices could be utilised for shiver communication rather than technological devices. There would also have to be other factors at play though when considering this. For example, neurological restructuring for the shark to further be influenced by information inputs and outputs. Ps: Love the show.

If only my school science lessons were half as entertaining as this, I might've learned more stuff.

You also could use the laser sharks to send fake informations to submarines using that kind of systems.

If laser sharks were communicating their attacks then that would imply that these are super intelligent sharks that know battle strategies which is terrifying in and of itself

I just realized... Kyle could use the wrong equation on purpose and virtually no one should even bat an eyelash
