I know you listed training as a con, but I'm feeling very reassured by the amount of training flight attendants go through. Not that I ever thought they weren't well-trained to handle emergencies and stuff, but having it confirmed makes me feel better.
@kbs1212
@kbs1212 4 жыл бұрын
Adina Lesperance A crash has an incredibly low survival rate, so the training is simply to make you and the crew ‘feel’ safe enough to fly. If people knew the truth, people would be too scared to fly and airlines would lose revenue. The emergency procedures for preparing for a crash are just to give everyone something to do instead of waiting to die. Also, very few crew members will actually attempt to save your life in an emergency. I used to be one, and my ex-colleagues would say that all the time. I even admit it myself, because there’s not much that can truly be done anyway.

@@kbs1212 the pilots are the ones trying to keep you safe during a crash so the flight attendants training really doesn’t matter there. Also the safest way to travel by far is by plane
@BeccaIrene
@BeccaIrene 2 жыл бұрын
@@beaublackburn8526 (10 months later) Actually, the pilots need to focus flying the plane so the flight attendants are the ones helping everyone in the cabin get in the correct landing positions, safety vests, and helping direct people away from exits that might have a fire outside or blocked by water. The flight attendants also know how to properly inflate the life rafts and slides needed to get out of the plane... The pilots must stay locked in the cockpits and exit out the cockpit windows while the flight attendants get everyone out of the plane safely.

Hi Becca, I’ve been a flight attendant for a little over 20 years now and for the most part you hit the nail on the head in your description of a flight attendants job and it’s benefits however I do have to correct you on a couple of things. The pay, although it is true that in your first few years the pay is below the cost of living worthy, the longer you stay the more you make. When I started back in 2000 I was making roughly $18-20K per year. After 5 years it went up a considerable amount and every year after a little more until you reach a full pay cap (in my company it’s the 13 year mark) making around $65k a year more or less (I have colleagues making 6 figures) depending on how many hours you choose to fly (with each new contract that amount goes up). That brings me to another correction. The more you fly the more control you have on where and when you fly. You get to control your schedule and have consistency in your life. Seniority is everything in the aviation works. Earn it and you’ll have control of it. Glad to know you enjoyed it for the most part. Not easy being new and in reserve but if you stick it through for a few years it’s life changing. Good luck on your future adventures.

Thanks for this!! I think I mentioned in the video that unless you are wanting to be an FA as a lifelong career (which I didn't) then the pay is pretty bad. For those who want to stay in the industry despite growing a family and kids, then more power to them! I knew I only wanted to be an FA for a couple years, which is what I think most people aim to do when being an FA for a season and not as a career. I'm glad you are enjoying it and that you've got the seniority to work with - that's awesome! xo

PROS: 1. get paid to travel (airlines pay for a portion of your food and hotel, on work trips) 2. the spontaneous lifestyle (exciting to go to a new place or meet new people) 3. special treatments by airport (domestic flights let you pack things passengers don't like shampoos and food. cut lines, no queues. dicounts on items) 4. the uniform (gives a sense of pride, feeling of importance, priority access) 5. cemrederie with other flight attendants. bond between airline crew members, meeting new people. CONS: 1. low salary + airlines don't pay for trips other than work trips or if you're allocated another base 2. the spontaneous lifestyle (stressful, unpredictable and can be inconvenient. eg. standby duty which makes you unavailable for many events like weddings or meet ups with friends because you don't know your schedule ) 3. a month to two months training. strict rules like uniform, makeup, certain high heels or certain length of skirt, many tests and drills. becca's airline did not allow trainees to fail 2 times or more (under 90%). training or dress code is paid by air stewardess. 4. the uniform (expensive, get in trouble for not wearing makeup, skirt length too short, hair is not neat, look professional ) 5. being away from family and friends

Sounds like the job just was not for you. My wife is an FA. She absolutely loves her job! She works for a great company and does get paid very well. Training was 8 weeks, but it is absolutely necessary to assure the safety of the passengers. She gets her schedule a month in advance and her "on call" days are scheduled in a block. She can trade flights with other FA's and pick up flights someone else does not want. She is gone most of the time but our kids are big so it is not an issue. If someone has small kids it would be tough for the spouse at home. You are correct that the dress code needs to be adhered too but I understand why. In the end it is a personal choice.

Operez: It used to be a fantastic job way back in the 60s and 70s .......being a flight attendant back then was some thing special....they hired high quality individuals back then and therefore treated them well as well ie giving them longer lay overs in destinations and also the $$$ was way better too. All of that has changed, the airlines know that there are millions of pretty boys and girls who want this job and so the flight attendants are replaceable easily. Airlines now are in it to make big bucks and so that means longer work hours and less pay. It still is special to be a flight attendant because the demand for it is so high. There could be ten job openings but a 10000 people apply for them!!

LOL... I am a nurse who quit being a flight attendant to become a nurse! But, don’t be easily discouraged, Amy. With your nursing background, you’d be a shoo-in! And, even as a new hire, you get to bid on schedules you’d like which gives you room to plan on perhaps working as a part time nurse. I knew one woman in my training class who was a dental hygienist who kept working as one during her days off from flying. Once you have seniority, you’ll be able to accommodate your schedule much more comfortably.

I think too many people who stop being crew members wait too long to quit and get a bit bitter and their videos are pretty negative. I love your upbeat and bubbly vibe--it really shows why you wanted to be one in the first place. And why you were probably really good at your job! Well done on you for knowing yourself well enough to know when it was time to tap out before you were too burned out and bitter. I dated someone who was a FA and all the cons you listed for why you stopped being a FA is the reason why it actually didn’t work out. FAs really don’t make a lot of money so he always picked up trips so that he could make extra money. He wasn’t really interested in leaving to find better paying job or if he did he would miss traveling for free. We couldn’t always spend weekends together like other couples do since he would be on 3-5 day trips. And finally, he seriously was caught up in the FA lifestyle. I don’t blame young professionals for taking advantage of being in a beautiful country or popular town and wanting to go out and party but it sorta sucks when you’re home and you see your bf/gf on an island or exploring a town with their crew and then go out to a bar/club afterwards. For women dating men that are FAs, you also can’t be overly jealous that your bf mighttttt have a lot of female friends bc let’s face it.... majority of FAs are women. So if your bf does decide to go out with a young crew, he’s most likely going to be going out with other women which in turn can make you a little jealous. In all, this video is very true to the FA lifestyle and I have heard many FAs love their jobs. Best of luck to all the people trying to be FAs!

i want to thank you for your desire to share your flight attendant experience with others. It deffenetly was fullfilling hearing all you had to say. I had applied for a position to be a flight attendant got a email back for an offer for and invitation to interview, and i think you helped me figure out the life i was going to have. Hearing all you went through sounded like atravasty. im struggling a little right now after walking away from a job my employers were harassing their employees but thinking i wanted to be a flight attentdant i might have had it much worse. You have veered me in a different direction. My previous job was always negativity with so much drama and that's not what i want to be around. As well as never knowing what my schedule would look like and knowing i am facing so much anxiety as it is; i think being a flight attendant would only make it so much worse. Again thank you for your imput and i prov you or prob you... congradulating you on a video job well done. i think your experience is tremendously observed and recognized through your video. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! IM SO PROUD YOU GOT OUT OF THAT AND ON TO BETTER THINGS

MonaGamie On one hand I agree but on the other this job is also about being the PR person for the company, you are the representative. So it’s the same as in corporate jobs where you have a dresscode along with the makeup. Men don’t have to do these things because this has never been a part of their professional look. That is to blame the society. Also I am sure you can go along with the rules in a way to make it as much comfortable as it’s possible like wear the smallest heel that you don’t notice while walking ect. So I see both sides I would say.

Thank you. This was super helpful. I just did my face to face interview yesterday and I’ve been feeling indifferent because they made us feel so special just to be selected out of thousands. But working other positions in the airline, I’ve only seen at a distance what FA life is like + at the moment i already have flight benefits. So for me it would just be more a career change. Therefore, if they offer it to me, I want to be as fully informed as possible before stepping into that world. So thanks ^_^

Thank you for sharing, I was thinking about becoming a flight attendant and the Internet never told me any of the stuff so I’m really glad that I found your video and I’m starting to rethink being a flight attendant. mostly the only thing that’s really wrong is the money that you’re going to make. I read online that it was $45,000 a year so I was planning on being able to get a nice size apartment for at least $500 a month for rent to $1000 but knowing that it varies then I’m thinking I’m gonna have to re-think my decision I don’t want to struggle

Every airline is different when it comes to compensation. But most of the time you have to work your way UP to 45K a year... but need to start at the bottom like everyone else. With higher seniority comes higher pay ;)

Becca: I really liked the way you described the pros and cons for being a flight attendant! By the way I would like the know what airline gives a 3-4 days in Hawaii for a lay over?? I want to join the airline you worked for!! Most U.S. based airline ( to my knowledge and research give approx. 24 hours off there) Actually that is rapidly becoming a con for being a flight attendant..... you don't get the long lay overs any more!!! You basically get just enough to eat and sleep and not really to gallivant around the town unless you have the strength of Tarzan!! You are tired after a long flight ie Mainland U.S. to Hawaii and so resting and sleep is important too!!

The pay can be so bad and everyone is under the impression flight attendants do well financially! Especially when you're at a regional. I had to live with up to 11 other people in a 3 bedroom apartment because I couldn't afford anything else. I eventually quit as well, because for me, the pros didn't outweigh the cons long term. I tried panty hose for about two days (and ruined about 4 pairs). Then discovered compression tights, which last way way longer and at the time, insurance covered! We didn't require makeup in the handbook and I often didn't for 3am shows. They didn't like it, but it wasn't required so they couldn't do anything about it!
