For any ride-sharing service, Uber, Lyft or any unknown car you're going into: Ask the driver who they're picking up and check the child lock on the sides of the passenger doors before you get in. If the child lock is on, you will not be able to get out even when the door is "unlocked". Share your trip with a friend or family member when possible!

I travel by myself alot. My top tips are getting a Pacsafe bag or backpack and using locks, and dress like locals. That usually means jeans, a hoodie, trainers or Converse. Basically I look like a hobo when I'm traveling but then again, I don't look like a target.

A great tip I heard is to cover your guide book with a dust cover from another book, if possible one in the language of the country you're visiting - then if you need to consult it when you're out and about you'll look less like a tourist.

Great tips! The most important one is just to be aware of what is going on around you. One of my friends just gave me a scarf with a hidden pocket. I'm interested to try it out. There are a couple of other things that I have found helpful. When you are out and about (or in the airport), a small cross body bag is helpful. You are never tempted to set it down while shopping or while you pay for something. Because it's right in front of you, people are less likely to try to steal it (or things out of it) than if it was on your shoulder or back. If you are carrying cash, keep a small amount in an easily accessible pocket so you can pay for a meal or taxi without accessing the place with your larger cash supply. If you are going somewhere that you can't "blend" with the population, dress and act in a respectful way to the people and the culture. This will protect you more than if you are acting like the typical tourist, and it's nicer for everyone.

As being another experienced traveler, I agree with all of your tips especially the don’t be flashy. I see people who wear designer brands out and it looks like a neon sign “Come mug me as I have lots of money.” Travelers need to be minimal. Thanks for sharing your personal stories. Even if they may be a little embarrassing, they will help your subscribers to avoid making the same mistakes. Can’t wait for my trip in late August to Italy! Sending love from San Diego.

Girl, you don't have to travel far to lose those Gucci slides! My daughter (only child) begged me for those slides on her 20th birthday..begged me! Of course, I bought it since it's her bday and all. Hi Becca and the Becca-ites, great video doll, you make some brilliant points. Further to point 2 - blending in, I've been to all three spots published as the top pickpocket spots in the world, stayed at 1 star hostels and seen some of the pickpockets in action out on the street. They overlooked me as I didn't dress flashy (love my old leather jacket with hidden pockets), and I picked up a local fashion or gossip magazine, even if I didn't understand the language, and flipped through it on public transport. You are allowed to bop your friends over the head with it, if they speak loudly in English in those said areas popular for pickpockets, I give you permission. Also, I don't bring my reusable water bottle from home (which shows a brand name which locals at my destination may not recognise), but I blend in with the locals buy buying a local water bottle and filling it up. I watch the locals people around my age, on how they walk, carry their bags and so on, and do a bit of that to blend in further. For those who worry about taking a backpack as a day bag - I did too initially, but now use them exclusively, specifically a tailored Italian leather model (without a brand name) with a sticky zip, or one by a brand that specialises in travel safe bags. Oh and if you DO get a bag snatched in one of these places, like one my sister's besties, who was probably wearing pearl earrings at the time and looking like a soft target. WELL! She felt the bag strap coming off her shoulder, spun around and swore her head off in the highest volume possible. Apparently it was hysterical to watch. Susannah and her bag was just fine, and the pickpocket now has a workplace acquired hearing issues. Anyhoo, I hope you all have a fabulous time travelling.

On looking like a local, VERY GOOD ADVICE. All the travel shows advise this, try to not pack anything, don't bring any clothes or toiletries. Buy them locally. Go to the shops the locals use, not the souvenir tourist traps. Not only will you be hobnobbing with the walk-a-day folks but you'll be looking like a local, and you'll have some great souvenirs when you get home. It'll be fun.

On road trips, my family knows to expect to hear from me at least every 2 hrs while driving in addition to a departure and arrival notification. While driving I give them a snapshot of my google maps/GPS location on my pit stops. I give them my planned rout each morning and send them any changes en rout, and all hotel reservations information, etc…. I carry bear spray with me on road trips as well as a personal alarm device. I also keep extra cash stashed away in a safe place just in case. There has been more than once while driving that electronic payment options for gas wasn’t available because of local storms knocking out their payment systems.

My bank offers travel credit cards that you load with a preset amount and that work just like a credit card. I take that instead of my debit card along with a credit card and some cash, that way if they get any of my cards I don't have to shut off access to my bank account, they only get what I loaded onto that card. So far (knock on wood) I haven't had a problem with losing any cards but I really do think that traveling light is the best way to keep tabs on your stuff. Is your passport holder RFID blocking? I'm still on the hunt for the perfect one. Preferably one with a pen loop - that's one thing I always seem to forget no matter how many times I've had to fill out those forms on the planes. UGH. GENIUS idea with the GPS playing through headphones, I will use that one for sure.

I don't know who's going to read this but anyway: my mom always told me to keep a small rectangular flat shoulder bag (don't know how they're called in the usa) that can only fit in your document, phone and money. (Just important belonging) Put it UNDER your jacket or sweater or shirt. The smaller it is the better, that way you know you always have those things on you and you can feel them, if they steal your purse you'll have all you need on you. A bit unconfortable when it's hot and you have nothing but a shirt on, still need to figure put a way for that :)

I had a great time in Italy, but pretending to know where you're going is impossible. The street signs are terrible and the maps are worse. I actually think they're designed that way to promote the use of taxis. Some months after my trip, I was watching a traveling show where the 'stars' were trying to navigate the streets of Italy in a car using the same maps. It was hysterical to watch how mixed up they got when trying to use them. :-)

I just don't like the industry and owing money. My question is how do you travel without credit cards? I know a lot of people who say they are necessary for travel. Also do you use travel insurance? I like the idea of having both cash and debit. The bank I have my money in is international too..so that helps.

Hi Brie! I do not have any credit cards... If I ever do get one, I will only have that one for building credit purposes. And I never invested in travelers insurance because I was broke LOL but I definitely will in the future, especially with all my camera gear now. I travel without credit cards by just using cash and debit cards. So far, haven't had any issues!

Do you have any tips on how much info you can disclose about yourself before it becomes too much. I regularly take the train to college and sometimes these strangers have come up to me claiming they don't know which train to get on or where to get on. And I always forget to ask them where they're going. Before I even think to ask, they'll ask where I'm going. This one time, this was my second encounter so I was bit more prepared but not a lot, still failed miserably, I remembered to ask him after and he said he didn't know where he was going. So immediately, I thought that was weird and that must have shown on my face Cos he then said the very last stop of the train I was getting on. By then I was already freaked out and getting the warning signals instinct from my first encounter that ended somewhat badly and I told him I couldn't tell him anything more about myself. He was asking what languages I knew, and where I lived and how many members were in my family and what I was studying and where and...eurgh. when I said I couldn't tell him, he was tryig to get pity by saying, "You think you're better than me. And I'm too much of a low wage earner you can't tell me." If this was the first time, I would have fell for it. I would have felt so bad. But this time I told him I couldn't disclose personal information like that to strangers. He didn't let down though and said, "Just tell me. We're friends aren't we." I was getting real creep vibes from him. I was so mad, I wanted to yell but decided to just ignore and hope he'd leave. I did end up having to yell and that caused others to look our way so he left. But still. The first time I was stupid enough to give my number. He said he'd be on the train regularly and wanting to be able to call if it was running late or whatever. I just didn't know how to say no. I said it was my dad's number as warning but he paid no heed to that until I had my dad pick up in my stead. Any tips on how to help strangers who look like they need help without giving away too much info on ourselves or how to politely tell them we can't tell them that about ourselves?

Traveling to Puerto Rico after 40 years of not traveling. Any tips welcomed.

hazelnut ice cream My partner & I went to Puerto Rico in January & we felt very safe. We did not go into La Perla because we did hear that it could be unsafe for tourists. La Perla can be a tourist attraction for Justin Bieber fans but that’s about it. It is bright & colorful to look it! All the places around it are safe, but if you aren’t looking for that type of adventure I just wouldn’t walk down/into that portion of the city. The pathway to both fortresses is very safe as it is above the wall. We stayed in an Airbnb in Condado, & rented a car for the week to drive the little ways into Old San Juan & then used an Uber to get around at night only because the cost of parking often didn’t make up for the cost of the trip. Old San Juan is beautiful & but be prepared to walk around a lot. A really fun place to go with local art & delicious & authentic Puerto Rican coffee is the Poet’s Passage. We also went on the Old San Juan Food Tour, it was pricey but WORTH it because you get a comprehensive history tour & delicious food made by locals. They also pointed out a lot of other local shops on the tour to go to later, so for us it was a great way to start our trip so we had shopping/activity/restaurant recommendations the whole rest of the trip. We made a day trip to El Yunque which was beautiful but at that time a lot of the trails were still closed due to the hurricane. We didn’t go to the bioluminescent bays because we heard the algae hadn’t fully regrown since the hurricane so it wasn’t very bright. The food is delicious, the locals are lovely & hospitable & there is a lot to enjoy for whatever type of traveler you are. I hope you have a wonderful time!!! Feel free to ask me any questions, always happy to help another traveler - ❤️

hazelnut ice cream - We rented a car through Alamo. We went through their website after researching prices, and found that it was the cheapest through them based on our travel time. We arranged the car, pre-paid & after we landed we walked there as it is within a very short range of the terminal. We showed them our drivers license, & our insurance card although we did purchase the supplementary insurance through them. We use State Farm & based on our policy, it covers us/car up until a max amount in a rental car. We brought our State Farm insurance cards, & placed the Alamo policy in addition to our own, in the glove box. You will have to check to see if your car insurance policy covers rental cars. Just an easy call to your agent. If it makes you feel more comfortable, have them email you a copy of your cards & policy - so you can have a digital copy saved to your phone for reference. If you’re planning to just stay in old San Juan I wouldn’t rent a car if your hotel is a short distance away, because you can Uber for less cost that it would be to rent a car and pay to park in old San Juan. Traffic laws are typically abided by, but if you get nervous about driving - I would just stay in Old San Juan or use your groups to go out further.

If someone is trying to assault you DO NOT tell Rape...yell as loud as you can FIRE. Sadly you're more likely to have someone call the police and help you if you if they think there's a fire than if you're getting raped.

2 weeks to cancel a debit card???!!! That's INSANE!!!! Here in the UK it's immediate, and usually you get the new card within a week, however, they won't send it to any other address than your registered home address.

Yes exactly! It's the same here in the US. I think it had something to do with them needing 7-14 business days to mail it to my house...but since I was in Amsterdam that did me no good haha.

Idk about putting both those earbuds into both ears however. U can be listening to gps In one ear & the other one stuffed down ur top just to muffle that gps for others to hear. We have 2 ears & 2 eyes and one mouth for a reason! U need to be watching and listening twice as much as ur talking. And as much as even my own parents laughed and joked on the kids on a leash (probably bc I was THAT kid clutching usually my dads legs all the time). However my sisters? Totally opposite of painfully shy me. Especially my 3rd youngest sister. Chick would make friends w ANYONE! So my parents were lucky we were born in the 80s. Bc seriously?! Just imagine losing your child to a person who is possibly in the business of trafficking children! U don’t wanna know what those children will endure for the rest of the lives YOU gave them.
