This is my favorite Beck song. There is something utterly sublime about it, simultaneously ethereal and tragic. It's distressingly beautiful.

I have to be in the mood to listen to it because it's so sad. But it's amazing! What a beautiful song. Honestly, the whole Sea Change album is so, so good. Maybe if I could just reach far enough. Strain a bit harder. Squint and put my hand out, that I may be able to taste my childhood youth just for a moment once again. Looking in the distance I see children with their mother and father. I think that might be me. Mom? Dad? is that you? Take my hand, you have been so kind and loving. It is so good to see your ageless faces for this brief moment. Take my hand because I do not want to let go. Don't let go just yet, because I have not had enough time to tell you how much I love you both. Don't let go, Please don't ever go.

People who think this is "unusual" for Beck, don't know him. He didn't start with Loser, as many had come to know him, thinking that was all there was to him. Listen to songs like Hollow Log, Gettin' Home, It's All in Your Mind (the original version, which is 10 years older than the one that appeared on Sea Change), The Way It Seems, Rowboat, Feel The Strain of Sorrow Never Ceasing... all written in his early 20s with the same melodic sensibility found here (and in most of Mutations, for the matter... forgotten about Nobody's Fault But My Own, We Live Again, Dead Melodies, Sing It Again?). This was the album he had wanted to make for a long time.
@alainvosselman99605 жыл бұрын
An assessement that is at the same time an ode to a very talented musician ! I felt exactly the same way when people started booing him at a festival here in Belgium... He had to play 'loser' before the public realized who was in front of them...by then (1994) i was already very kean to see him live. And it wasn't the first time i've seen people throw bottles at him. Actually for a long time he went unnoticed for the true talented and gifted person he realy is. I believe the album 'midnite vultures' is what created the right splash for him to get acknowledgement from people such as David Bowy and others. Saw him two times and bought all of his albums (about 10 ) untill i took on a jazz study and started taking more interest in that genre. Every single one of those cd's was epic and drenched in authenticity.

MitchellJJonesVideo Holy shit, I was just wondering why those strings sound so familiar. Yeah his voice also sounds like Nick's here.
@lindahermer98579 жыл бұрын
MitchellJJonesVideo I agree, Mitchell -- The chords are almost identical, and the swell of the strings is deeply similar too. I'm not positive it was a direct rip-off, but as a minimum it was profoundly inspired by Drake. Beck plays Drake during some of his sets so we know he is familiar.
@lindahermer98579 жыл бұрын
Linda Hermer I also meant to point out that it's in the same key. This, combined with all the other similarities, is a problem.
@MJJpwns7779 жыл бұрын
Linda Hermer I'd say in no way did he rip off Drake, but he seems to have taken inspiration. It doesn't seem like a stretch to say that most modern folk/alternative folk artists have been influenced by the short lived greatness that was Nick Drake.
@lindahermer98579 жыл бұрын
MitchellJJonesVideo I agree,, but I still think the songs are much more similar than Pharrell Williams' and Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" and Marvin Gaye's "Got to GIve It Up" despite the jury award in the latter case!
