There is biodiesel and renewable diesel. They are both made from grease and cooking oil. Biodiesel is crappy stuff not processed enough so bugs and shit want to grow and make slime. Renewable diesel is made in a refinery and instead of using crude oil they use old cooking grease and oil and process with catalysts and hydrogen to make a fuel identical to regular fuel.

The biggest issue ive had with biodiesel (Im an auto-diagnostic guy) is it breaks down the crud in tanks and sends it upstream, so can be really heavy on filters when introduced, but doesnt eseem to effect engines or in my limited experience, burners.

Love your oil burner videos. For 40 years, until this fall, I lived in a house with an oil fired furnace. In recent years everyone in this area has gone to heat pumps and gas packs. The techs here now don't know how to work on an oil burner. I had to teach myself how to keep it going. I hope you still plan to put one if the diesel heaters in your new truck? I want one and would love to see you set it up and get your thoughts on it. No one here that I know of uses one. I'd like to have one for emergency and auxillary heat.

i saw them making biodiesel they have 2 ways.. cut it with kerosene and you're good to go.. or mix it with alcohol and it has some kind of reaction and you have to filter it.. people use it in their diesel engines.. probably not a bad deal if you could get enough of it but you would have to have a lot of fast food places willing to give it to you.. they will though because they have to pay to get it hauled. whatever I did I would want to filter it real good and mix it with good diesel and only use it in a pre DEF truck. its a lot of effort

I remember servicing the Beckett burners when this was the latest thing. Looks like there are not many brand-specific burners out there anymore. I can remember Lennox, and their belt drive burners, Wayne burners, Mueller Climatrol burners, Armstrong, etc, etc, etc. Now, it's all the same, except for those Riello (?) branded burners that we were told not to work on back in the 1980's.

I mean you need extra filters to run that stuff in a diesel vehicle (either in the vehicle, or filtering it when mixing it yourself). Dumping it in people's heating oil tanks is crazy. Filtered properly things will run fine on it, but a standard tank filter doesn't stand a chance!

I always get nervous fooling with the oil tank filter, My neighbor who was on the fire department told me a story about a burner man sent to replace the gauge on a oil tank in the basement of a home, While changing the gauge his wrench slipped off the top of the tank and snapped off the filter ,he plugged the hole with his thumb ,of course the tank was full and to top it off he had no cell signal,he had his thumb in the hole for 6 hours till the homeowner returned home ,I have since protected my tank from a similar issue, what a pissa,

The general opinion about bio-diesel seems to be that most furnaces can handle up to a blend of 20% bio mixed with 80% pure diesel. But what if someone cheats and adds more than 20%? Would someone cheat or get sloppy? Of course they would! I also read that major production of bio-fuels can be a problem because it puts a big demand upon available water resources and actually produces greenhouse gas in the process. Plus, Steve has already found that it is a nuisance for furnace maintenance. People are even making their own bio-diesel; and what could go wrong with THAT? Yep, leave it to the government! I had an issue once, when a sloppy driver did not flush his truck`s diesel tank compartment before filling it with red kero for my delivery. He added sludge from his TRUCK`S tank to my own tank according to the driver of the new company that I replaced him with..
