How to replace an oil boiler jet (Ireland UK) or furnace in USA

This is a Grant 50 90 boiler, the Jet is a 0.60 60s jet. it is the same procedure for a lot of boilers. This is not a service and it is posted for entertainment purposes only!
Be safe and isolate the boiler from the supply before you start as you could get a nasty shock from the high voltage spark if it comes on.

Good job, Bootsowen, ...well done for having a go and getting it all back together and working - MOST people wouldn't have a clue - because they are scared off by 'The Professionals'. Got the same boiler...installed it myself -in 1997 - *never checked oil pressure or did smoke test etc., and it ran for 20 years before I needed an oil engineer (pump was on way out). (*Grant test fire them as Riello burners - apparently - need to be set up for each manufacturers' boiler). It cost £950 (new) and a bit of sweat to install...but without paying for an annual service in real terms it's cost me nowt. Cleaning the baffles takes about 15 mins and I've only done it once...and it was VERY simple. Since I've been a kid I've always serviced my own cars - even replaced an engine...yet most of my friends would say things like: "I wouldn't dare replace my brake pads and discs." I'm now 70 and have just taken my one-year-old car for a service...£215 for changing the oil and filter and £3 for a sump washer. I kept my mouth shut and paid the bill...but when they service manager said: "I hope you like your clean car," I said: "I never clean my cars it wears the paint down. ;-) Good luck, young un, and long may you enjoy having fun and saving money!!! Bruce Currie, we share many DIY traits and are a dying breed. I have just moved into a 17th C cottage that has some unknown Mistral (of Telford) boiler, that even they can't identify. But by chance I stumbled across this video and it looks identical to mine! May I pick your brains - 4 weeks ago, this boiler, not used for 2 years to my knowledge, was not working, so some random tweaking and oil bleeding it has now been working for 3 weeks, phew! The only issue remaining is that it starts each time with a loud verrroommm that can be heard quite a distance. It's not a bang like I have seen some oil boilers so I am not too concerned. However, it could be a simple service/clean/adjustment will address this issue. Anything you could advise would be gratefully received, even if it's to say that your boiler is loud to start with. Cheers in advance.

@@dardobartoli Hi Bob, could it be that it is not igniting initially, until there is a good bit of fuel already in there? Are the sparking gaps set correctly. Have a look on the internet for the manuals for the models that I have listed in the description, they are a good place to start for the spark gaps. Also, are the tips of the spark electrodes pointed and clean/sharp? But to be clear, as many of the comments have reassured me, I am not a boiler engineer, so at your own risk!.

@@bootsowen Thanks, this is the first video or anything I can find on a boiler similar and it has given me enough to go and strip it down and at the very least clean it up and identify the state of the parts with a view to replacing if possible still. The easiest way to gauge the electrodes is by using a 3 mm Alan key and gauge the distance from the nozzle with that

Thanks, Have a look at the other comments, oil engineers hate this video so take it with a pinch of salt. This worked for me, but whether or not I needed to do it... the jury is still out, I can't tell if there is a difference, but it still works.

As for the original instructions the jet required will depend on the BTU's of the house but for that boiler its mostly hollow jets. You did a better job that most places I go.... for real!👍

Some of them can be a nightmare for throwing faults after you have arrived home and something else has failed because of a new part drawing different amps or watts or whatever the fuck. Oh just looking at that boiler gives me flashbacks 😳. Also I was wrong about what type of jet. They all differ in type per size and model. Anymore tell them that anything fails and you replace it there is a chance of something else going out. And download the ohms info for each component and check it with a multimeter and the tolerances should be listed so you don't have to go back again. Catch it before it fails and you on another job that you have to drive 15 miles to change a capacitor. Power on buddy. I was just going to get a service man until I seen this video. You just have saved me spending between 100 to 200 euro. This will come in handy for my kids over the Christmas and they will be warm. Interesting video. Some useful information there. I see a lot of criticism in the comments from pros. Fair enough if you were claiming this was a full professional service, but it seems all you did was change out the nozzle on your own boiler, as the title of the video states. I suppose the pros are genuinely worried that everyone with a spanner starts having a go, but if someone is competent then I don’t see a problem, especially as it’s your own boiler. Those hoses do look dodgy though 😀. Cheap to replace.

I did this today. On reassembly I sanded the come free of rust and applied copper grease to hopefully aid disassembly next time.

@@skipup5083 I was told there is not much servicing on a boiler apart from cleaning it out once a year and checking the jet and clearance from the jet to the electrodes.

You must also know you didn't take out the baffles and clean them with a wire brush and inside of the boiler with a wire brush then hoovered it out, there are no pipes inside, just baffles to restrict the heat escaping as that area is the primary heat exchanger on conventional boiler and judging by the burner I don't think it was a condensing boiler. Word of advice.... change the braided hoses just in case they leak all your oil.👍

By all the gods, I think this is the same as the boiler in my new (but old) house, but rebadged by Mistral Boilers. I thought mine was in poor repair but this is worse. If you're still monitoring this video, would you be able to provide link to where you got specification/manual/instructions from as up till now, I have found nothing. I will rewatch and try and note all the specific details you list (including brand etc) On that note, after 'tweaking' the only issue I'm left with is a loud vvvrrroooomm noise each time it starts. Not a bang but it is annoying. If you have an idea as to what this may be, then forever in your debt. Thanks in advance.

I think that I got the manuals by googling the type of boiler, I think I put the name in the description. I think the vroom may be the gap setting of the spark electrodes. But that is just a guess.

In fairness you changed the jet and got that done.. There are a couple of things I would like to bring to your attention.. Them 2 flexible hoses running from the burner to the tiger loop are badly corroded and can leak badly over time and can be dangerous left like that.. Also that thermostat should not lift in and out like that it should be tightly secured in place

So you probably wouldn't like to know that went the unit is frozen and the thermostat kicks in to stop it from exploding I take the thermostat out so that the heat from the boiler has more time to conduct up the pipes and thaw the blockage, Hasn't blown up yet! Great boiler!, The pipes on the other hand...! I must post a video on that thermostat. People here on youtube somehow seem to think that this is dangerous!

You say the thermostat kicks in to stop it which indicates it is still working.. Are the pipes that are frozen lagged? Your best bet is to get a good heating engineer to take a look at it

Do you think a "Good heating engineer" would work on it? You saw the trouble I had to get to the jet. My experience of service people is that they will recommend a new one. Better mark up for them and no hassle.

A neighbour suggested it, and I thought, yes, they know what they're talking about. Given that it hadn't been serviced in 10 years and since then I can't tell the difference I'd say they were wrong. Or they averted a ticking timebomb, we'll never know.

I was listening to "the war and peace report" on NPR rebroadcast on RTE R1 extra yesterday and it was talking about the other side of the COP Glasgow conference. It might help to grind your gears! I get it that some things are more efficient, but I saw my grandmothers 25 year old perfect oil boiler, that would have seen her out be replaced with a condensing unit. I can see her beating it and it is 2 years old and she 95! She paid for the privilege.

If you can smell diesel smoke in your house, I would say that asking KZbin for the answer is not the way to go! You should shut down your boiler and call a boiler repair person. Ventilate the space, fresh air, shut down the boiler.

Those 2 spikes are electrodes and u dont need to take all that assembly off 2 change the nozzle just take blast tube off and remove electrodes

Wrong jet mate! Also them jets weren't available 10 years so it must have been serviced relatively recently and you can touch the jet just not the filter side of it which is the porous shiny part on the jet. Good job mate but you made it brutally hard for yourself. And one of the most important parts is the oil hose to be changed because they do tend to leak and if that leaks after you did that job and it was reported to the EPA you'd be up s*** creek. PTFE is standing for polytetrafluoroethylene it's not ordering material. And you didn't test any of the components with a multimeter to if any of the electrical components are breaking down or ready to fail example capacitor motor coil control box which contains the transformer for making the electrodes arc for ignition of the atomized fuel from the jet you just fitted but fair play to you I've seen worse

Couldn't have said it better myself any time I'm on an oil service I always do the basic electrical checks with the components with a multimeter- a must if your an oil/gas engineer in my opinion I dont think I could do my job without it. But always check electric components with a multimeter to see if they are on there way out so you can advise the customer otherwise you will get the dreaded phone call saying "you serviced my boiler a fee weeks ago and now its not working" always cover your back. The same goes for putting a pressure gauge on the pump to see how its working (you can tell by the gauge if it works properly or if the pressure keeps dropping I.e pump on it's way out)

Oh yes. It was combustin alright. I took the whole head off because I didn’t know what I was doing. That much should be clear. Also I wanted to be gentle as lots of the fasteners were seized or corroded. I didn’t fit the tiger loop so I can’t comment. The whole thing seems to be working exactly as before. You probably wouldn’t like my trick of pulling out the thermocouple when the pipes to the unit are frozen. Never fails. Not an explosion in sight! The plan is to retire this unit once the oil runs out. But as it is in a holiday home that will take a few years. Thanks. Any tips for next time? Help rather than negative blind questions?

Boots, with all due respect, that is nowhere near a service for that appliance. You made it so difficult for yourself to change that nozzle too. All you needed to do was remove the two small screws on each side of the blast tube and you have ample access to the nozzle holder.. The blast tube fins should have been thoroughly cleaned with a wire brush before refitting. The inside of the boiler should also have been cleaned with baffles removed, inspected and any damaged ones replaced. Those flexible houses were well passed their sell by date and should also have been replaced without question. Pump pressure and flue gas analysis should have been carried out to complete the service. A little knowledge is dangerous. Take it from me on this one, I service and repair these appliances for a living.

Hi there, so far it is not going at all, I haven't started. This boiler is fitted to a holiday house. So it is very little used. So far I am waiting to use up the oil to see how long it lasts. We have been on 1/3 of a tank for the last 3 years, so I can't see it coming anytime soon. But the idea is that because we pay a higher rate for electricity because we use so little, it is maybe worth using more electricity, flawed logic perhaps. In the meantime I have fitted another stove, so the house has 3 woodburners now. I have put the installation in another video. I always find it funny that whenever a video goes up on the internet showing gas or oil work a certain group emerges to say how it has been done incorrectly. Not acknowledging that different parts of the world have different standards. Even the differences between Ireland and the UK are big.

Happy to leave your comment up if it is helpful, but just saying that something is incorrect does not help anyone learn. A few people have commented on the condition of the flexi pipes. Have you read the other comments? There is a mix of (presumably) boiler service people who assert that nobody should touch such a complex and dangerous device, and then others who are looking to see what is inside so that they understand how something works. What did you train as? You don't say in your comment?
