Loved the video! Great tips! If I may chime in, we should also consider how your videos are rendered by KZbin. Gradients will suffer from heavy banding, so be mindful of lighting an empty backdrop or wall. And darker areas are compressed more heavily than brighter ones. So if you're going to go dark, don't use gradients, and fill your background with stuff to break up the effects of the KZbin compression. Basically, the worst thing you can do for KZbin is shoot in front of a big dark purple wall with a gradient. 🤓🤣🤦♂️

Thanks so much! Yesss that’s a great tip! You can totally see banding in that shot of Chris and I against the white background with the plants! Stuff with texture and layers definitely help!

You just nail it, I think the video is great because you don't propose a setup (as there are millions on KZbin) with a Sony A7SIII, an f1.2 lens, an Aperture lighting with a large softbox and with a room with a lot of space ahead for equipment and space behind so that everything is out of focus .... I love this new type of video that you are making, in which everything is affordable and "reachable" for anyone who is starting.... And also all the videos recommended at the “cards” are perfect to keep watching 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I somehow managed to squeeze 3 different backgrounds out of my studio that is about the size of a regular dorm room. We have very little space so it’s also a guest bedroom, a darkroom, it has a 3D printer, a bunch of scanners + camera storage and my YT studio all in one small room. Advanced Tetris skills required! Plenty of backgrounds: sofa background, a shelf background with the cameras and the angle into the room from the desk. Just working on angle number 4 now which is the angle towards the desk with the computer and 3D printer behind me. The practicals make all the difference, I’ve got RGB smart bulbs and LED strips everywhere so I can switch things up depending on the video and I’m not so dependent on the wall colour. By the way the best key light for tight spaces is the FalconEyes SO 28 TD, because it makes diffuse light and it’s flat so it can fit in spaces where a soft box just wouldn’t fit.

Love it. Thanks for the great tips! Moving from a shooting space that had built in elements that gave depth, texture and tone (and tons of natural light, too) into a spare bedroom temporarily as I build out the new space (which is a 7x18 closet) I've been struggling to really nail my background and get the elements the previous space just 'had'. This also gives me a ton to consider when designing the new space from scratch. :)
@greatpix4 жыл бұрын
Becki, my tip for folks would be to clamp some cheap fabrics over those boards in the background. Maybe two in solid colors, one with a more pronounces texture to it, and one with a simple and not over the top print. You could pull them taught or create more depth by laying them loosely. Myself I'd pick a textured fabric in a warm white, a dark blue, and a dark grey or black with a subtle print or rough texture like a knit fabric. Warm colors against cool ones gives a feeling of depth also.

Hi Becki, your face looks great against the plywood and particle board. It may be harder to color correct and grade - but I love the idea of having dark colors, shadows and not much else in the frame. From the standpoint of marketing and branding it's awesome - who else uses shadow this way? I watch a lot of tech type videos and even on filmmaking-cinematography channels, you don't see that often. At least not to the extent you go with your shadows. Thanks for the tips!

I've been wanting to watch this video since it came out, finally did, and loved it!!! We have a small office a short walk away from our apartment and have shot most of our KZbin videos there. We were just chatting about perhaps moving one of our desks to the opposite wall (they're currently side by side) so that we can open the space up for either a KZbin backdrop or small photoshoot space. This video gave me lots to think about and I'm looking forward to checking out the video you mentioned as well about finding your design style for KZbin. Currently, there is *way* too much going on in the background of our videos, simply because it's our workspace. I loved how quickly you put together your tiny sample backdrop using the different types of wood and how you framed with some plants and the long tube bulb. It's great to know the F-stop you use, too. :) Thanks, Becki!

It's SOO interesting that you want cooler tones behind you, you're basically doing the exact opposite of what is best for your skin tone in terms of fashion, makeup, and filming. You look healthier and more beautiful against the warmer tone, you do not "wash out" in any way. The cooler tones make you look paler, less healthy. Contrast might seem good, but it's rarely what's good for PEOPLE and you are a human after all.

One way you could help is to take stills of your studio that could be used with a green screen. For example, at the end of the video, you have a beautiful "out of focus" background with you in the foreground. I could put myself into that scene by taking that background and using a green screen. Just a thought.
