I got a tad emotional in the intro....how well I understand the "give up the rat race or carrot on a stick" lifestyle. My wife and I found a turn of the century home in the country where we raised our family of four children...horses, pigs, chickens, geese...you name it. That was thirty six years ago. To this day all of my children thank us for raising them in the country and brag on how wonderful and full their childhood was. Now, eleven grand children later... my daughter is doing the same. PSA - Neutralizing lye w vinegar creates an EXOTHERMIC reaction meaning you’ll be burning yourself TWICE! Once with the lye causing a chemical burn and again with a thermal burn caused by the neutralization - that energy has to go somewhere. Best to rinse with LOADS of water, save the vinegar for pickling! It’s disheartening that this misinformation is still shared!

The amounts we deal with are not large enough to create any exothermic heat. It's a classic case of book knowledge and practical experience. We know that mixing acids and bases creates water, salts, and heat. But in practice, when you get some lye crystals under your fingernail or in an old paper cut, household vinegar will quickly and painlessly neutralize the lye.

Lye breaks the fat in the lard into soap and is consumed in the process. When you mix a correct amount of lye and lard, the end result will be all soap, no lard, no lye.

Saponification is the name of the process. It's funny when people make fun of lye soap (like the Beverly Hillbillies, note Granny was always BOILING a HUGE kettle of supposed soap, and I promise if you boil it , it will come out grainy.). they think the lye stays lye, like chemistry doesn't happen to change it into something else. That would be like sodium and chloride stayed their respective toxic selves instead of turning into salt. Also, there are VERY cute candy silicone molds and soap molds to make adorable soaps if you want.

You can also use your hot lye water (heat transfer) into your fat (lard, cocoa butter etc) to melt your fats or butter. If you do this, actually use a spatula and pour the lye water over the top of the spatula that is in the lard. Then use the immersion blender in spurts to bring your product to trace.

Great tutorial...lye is actually a base (NaOH). It is caustic and will cause burns. Still dangerous, but on the other side of the pH scale. That's why you use vinegar to neutralize the lye...vinegar is an acid. It's an exothermic reaction. "It's chemistry!"

Pouring vinegar on strong hot lye will make it a whole lot hotter. If you have either a strong alkali or a strong acid on your skin, the recommended first aid is to flood it with lots of cool water to dilute the pH to a safe range without creating an exothermic chemical reaction on your skin.

Wearing: gloves, goggles, long sleeves * make it in a well ventilated area or even outside, make sure no pets or kids are around the fumes after mixing the lye water will make it hard to breathe and making you feel as if you will choke making you cough. *Vinegar incase you splash lye on you/ I would suggest rinsing it off with water is fine to. * adding the lye to water never the other way around 40 oz lard ( melted) 5.4 lye ( order on amazon) 13.5 oz water Allow it to cure for about 3 weeks Add the lye into the water, melt the lard add it to lye water and stir for a second make sure the lard is room temperature around 80 degrees ( both was about 100 degrees) mix till you can see the soap start to trace, pour into mold let sit, and cover let sit for 24 hr.

My wife and I followed a similar recipe last year and it came out great. We made a second batch and added several hand fulls of rose petals and the same with sweet pea petals. This gave a really nice natural sent to the soap my wife loves. You could buy and add essential oils but that would just be adding additional chemicals. Great video. You can actually distill your own essential oils like lavender using steam distillation then you know your not adding any crazy chemicals... You can also make your own lye with wood ash if you have a wood stove at home.

Actually I'm gonna try this for all my disgusting throw away cooking used oil, and some lard and all kinds of oil from my meat. I will give the soap away to poor people. Atleast I made something out of it rather than pour it in my sink. It just keeps clogging up and making my sink and sewer go crazy plus the cat litter sand clogges my drain lols. Coconut oil, palm have similar properties. You can use on or both. If you use coconut or palm you will want to use less lye as both are drying to the skin. I use a lye calculator to figure out what my measurements are. Soapee.com for coconut it is usually a super fat of between 15% and 30% I go as high as 40% super fat so it’s more gentle on the skin. It will take an additional day or so to be hard enough to remove from the mold.

Great tutorial, however, to keep from adding unnecessary and unnatural chemicals into the soap, a glass bowl would be much better when mixing the lye, so you dont get bpe's into the soap. And when mixing the lye, its best to do it outdoors for better ventilation.

We use Pyrex glass containers that withstand 450°F and we used it to mix the lye while having a thermometer in the water to watch the temperature carefully and never has it broken and I agree on it being mixed outside also, for better ventilation

Potassium hydroxide produces a thick mixture like brownie dough that will not totally solidify. After the soap has cured, you dilute it with water to make liquid soap.

cleancutguy...you have to be careful with coconut oil. it's only added to harden the soap, it makes it more surface active and helps the soap bubble. if you want to mix it into the soap don't use more than 30%! that's absolutely the maximum! it's very drying. and try not to mix it into any oil combination that you use for children. actually nothing is better to the human skin than lard. i don't get the fuss about it. lisa wade, you can use goats milk, but freeze it before mixing the lye into it, so it stays as white as possible. if you mixing it in room temperature it gets brown, the lye 'burns' it.

One of my best selling bars is my 100% coconut oil soap bar with a 20% super fat. Very luxurious on the skin. Coconut oil is used for it's cleansing ( it is one of the top cleaning properties in the calculator) and bubbles. Great for laundry soap and a stain stick when having no super fat :)

Lye isn't acid, it's actually the opposite, else acid (vinegar-acid) wouldn't neutralize it, lye is a base, opposite of acid. that I know from chemistry, but so, the thing in fightclub actually is true ^^ - AH and to lady amking soap, although you don't know chemistry-science so well, since you sticked to recipie very strictly, your soap has become very nice since oyu worked accurately, going over oyutube and watching vids about making soap, failures are common. ^^ furthermore you didn't use the cold process, but with "hotter" solution of the lye ( becomes hot itself, because exoterm reaction), well and hot process = much faster and soap dries faster, you don't needa wait for days - weeks. (still needs to cure 4 weeks as you say, to beocme 100% safe to use).

If you pour vinegar right away it will create a stronger reaction and will burn you more. First you rinse with cool/cold water for 10-15 min and maybe later you could use the vinegar. For the skin you must not use vinegar right away.

Nope. Household vinegar works fine, quickly neutralizing the lye. The amounts on your hands are not large enough to produce exothermic heat sufficient to burn. My wife and I have been doing this for almost 30 years, and have always used vinegar whenever we get any lye on our skin.

Question...you say the lard should be room temp and then say 80 deg. Room temp is 68 deg. Even at 80 deg store bought lard is solid. Am I missing something?

What is the shelf life of the soap product? Will the soap expire on Dec 31, 2019 (based on the expiry date of the coconut oil)? Or will it be plus 2 years or Sept 10, 2021? I am still confused about the expiration dates of hand made soap. Thanks for answering ;)

Have gathered all I need to try my first ever batch of soap. This looks like a great starting point for me. I have always been intimidated by the lye. LOL I decided the only way I am ever going to do it is by doing it. But the mold I ordered turned out to be much smaller than I thought it was. Can you tell me the volume, or the measurements, of this mold you are using so I can adjust the recipe appropriately, please? Thanks for sharing your videos with us.

Here's the ingredients for a homemade organic herbal soap 5 cups coconut oil 3 cups lye solution (made from wood) 1 cup fresh herbal extract (I used herbal and fruit extracts) 1 tablespoon citronella oil (optional) Use same process. Mix oil with lye solution. If the mixture becomes creamy add the herbal or fruit extract and mix for few minutes until it meets its consistency. Add citronella oil and mix for few seconds. Pour into a molder and let it stand for 12-24 hours. Remove from molder and cut to desired size. Air dry for 28-30 days to complete saponification. Clean and packaging. Good luck.

Hi Becky. I haven't seen you in a while so I decided to watch this video again and I am so glad I did. I always like to reinforce what I have learned. I just wanted to say that if you have a clothes dryer, you can put those towels in the dryer and get them real hot and then wrap the mold. I took a break from soaping but will continue over the weekend. It is so good to see you again. Thanks again for the video!!

4:55 Lye is literally the opposite of acid. That’s why you should have vinegar handy in case of a burn.
