@@maria.bibi94the lye needs to cool but it shouldn’t be cold. Needs to be a lil warm. That is what the temperature gun is for. And the oil needs to be a little above room temperature (until it is clear) but the essential oil can be just room temp.

A tip that Katie Carson said in her lye safety video is to use half water half ice. It will help cool the lye and keep the fumes at a minimum

Vinegar! Always have white vinegar on hand for if you end up with lye on your skin. I put white vinegar into my sink of soap to deactivate any lye and I use straight vinegar to wipe down my surfaces and tools like my stick blender, thermometer and scale.

Vinegar on lye burn can actually make it worse! ALWAYS use plenty of cool, clean running water on a lye burn. For what it’s worth, common vinegar from the grocery store is only 5% vinegar and 95% water.

My only concern is that in all my apartment the temperature is around 30degree Celsius. So is very hot. I don’t know how to create a good environment for curing my soap. It depends on the quality of your water. If it is good enough for drinking, it is probably okay for making soap. Some water contains chemicals or minerals that can cause problems with soap making. I would recommend making a small batch of soap using the water you have available and see how your soap turns out. Hope this helps! 🥰

They are commonly referred as lye but there are two types of lye that are typically used for soap. Potassium Hydroxide Lye is used for liquid soap, and Sodium Hydroxide Lye (NaOH) is used for solid bar soap.

Anne Marie, I have followed your instructions and made 3 wonderful batches of cold process soaps. After 6 weeks of curing CP batches I have found that my soaps are : running out" rapidly and look soggy in the shower even when not in use. The final finished soap is quiet hard. Any tips on how to keep these soaps not run out so fast/ last longer?

Great question! Storing the soaps in a cool dry place when they aren't in the shower can help with the longevity of the soap.

Made my first batch today! I had a mild panic attack when needing to put the lye container in the sink, though. Is it safe to just rinse it and then wash it with the rest of your soapmaking dishes at the end? I wash my baby's items in that sink so I was kind of scared after! Other than that though, it was so much fun and I can't wait to do it again!!

Yes, it is safe to wash that dish out in a sink you use for other dishes or washing up in. Just make sure you wash down the sink after you are done washing your cold process tools.
