Radiologic techs are licensed professionals who are in charge of producing images of bones, internal organs, and body tissues through the use of different types of radiography equipment, like CT scanners and X-ray machines. They have several other roles and responsibilities, including: Helping physicians make an accurate diagnosis through the images they capture, Ensuring that the radiography equipment is working well, Making sure that the images are clear, Assisting patients before, during, and after the test, Keeping the radiation level at the appropriate level to avoid negative health effects
In 1999, the Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded $35,510 as the average base salary. By 2019, the average base salary rose to $63,120. Wages grew by $27,610 (or $1,380 yearly) from 1999 to 2019. The estimated 2021 average base salary would be $65,881, using $1,380 as the average yearly income. If trends were to continue, by 2029, the average base salary would be $76,925. In 2019, the base salaries of radiologic tech were vastly different, depending on the state. The lowest paying state, Alabama, on average, pays radiologic tech $47,290. The highest paying state, California, on average, pays radiologic tech $86,120. There is a $38,830 difference in average wages between the highest paying and the lowest paying state.
The job market for radiologic tech has grown since 1999. In 1999, there were 177,850 employed radiologic techs. By 2019, this rose to 207,360 employed radiologic techs. From 1999 to 2019, there was a growth of 29,510 employed radiologic techs (1,405 per year). In 2019, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted a 9% growth in radiologic techs over the next ten years. By 2029, they predicted 226,022 employed radiologic techs.
According to MBTI Type Tables for Occupations, the Myers-Briggs types most likely to become radiologic techs are:
INFJ (The Advocate): 2.53 SSR
ISTJ (The Inspector): 1.84 SSR
ENTJ (The Commander): 1.72 SSR
INTJ (The Architect): 1.48 SSR
All states require radiologic techs to be licensed. Before they begin working, they need at least an associate's degree.

George Barry The field is VERY crowded. Schools do pump out alot of students. These student (no fault of their own) compete with those who have been there 20 years plus...keeping wages shelved. The way to increase wages is to do more schooling. Example: go back to school for CT. Then for MRI etc You get the idea. But school is not cheap. And you will find other student techs that also have done this...you will compete for wages against them (it is, after all, a market place of labor). Each license/Registration costs time and money to maintain. Yes, you make more..but you also have to pay more to maintain those papers. So bottom line: Be committed to the long haul..or do not go down this road. To boot, every state has different rules..so moving is not such an easy option. Can be done, but it can but a hassle to get another state to accept your credentialing.

I do agree with you where the field is quite crowded but some places do cross training so you can learn about MRI or CT on the job and still get paid, all you have to do is take the exam and pass. I'm also pretty sure the license is accepted across the entire US no matter the state.

If you don't learn CT or MRI and get certified in those modalities you will have a hard time finding a job. Every job I apply for they want someone that can work nights can work CT. ARRT license is just a foot in the door. Most places don't want to train you for CT, they will just pass over you for hire for someone that has that experience.

I am considering returning to college for my Rad Tech degree. Since I started exploring the medical field working as a CNA and then as a CCMA, I've been trying to figure out what direction I would go if I continued working in the medical field. For me it seems like an opportunity to still have great patient interactions while being in a more structured environment and without quite the same level of responsibility/stress of a position like a RN.

I'm going through the same thing. I already did my Associates in Social Sciences at 22 and then I worked for two years to save some money and get work experience for my resume. Now I'm doing better and my local CC that I graduated from has a Rad Tech program. I might renroll to find out more info and finish a few classes I need since I took most of the general ed requirements for my original Associates. My other local CC where I live has the program as well. If I go there, I would save money on my commute and walk to school. The other CC I would have to pay for commute and the program at the school I went to for my AA I was in, they paid for my travel. Rad Tech is a good career if you're undecided on a career choice and you don't want to finish your Bachelor's or return to school since it would take too long and I need to start a career soon.. I originally wanted to be an Anesthesiologist but the lifestyle wasn't for me. Now I can do Rad Tech and it's almost similar to the role of Anesthesiologist except the sedation and not a MD but you get my drift.

I am a rad tech in California and would not recommend this career for anyone to get into. What you failed to mention is that this field in the acute setting is very wearing on your body. At hospitals you are required to move patients on your own. This means on a daily basis I am moving 300+ lb patients by myself on and off the CT table. Many of my colleagues and myself included have had major injuries as well as repetitive motion wearing on our bodies, backs and wrists/hands mostly. Some hospitals are better equipped then others for moving help but I have personally seen dozens of rad techs need back surgery or hand/wrist surgery. The workload/patient demand is more then one person should be doing and the new grads are not always well trained to be relied on. On an average shift I am seeing 30-40 patients for CT scans, each patient has multiple exams ordered. That is 60-80 times that I am moving a patient, some are able to move themselves but close to 80% of patients can not move on their own. I did construction before I became a rad tech and construction was nothing compared to how taxing this career is on my body.

Radiology has to do with diagnostics and analysis of the imagery,takes at least 9-13 years,rad tech is the one doing the imagery and specialises in taking the imagery together with making sure the equipment is ok.Takes 3-4 years to completion.

If you are only on a vacation visa, then you will not qualify to go to school. You need proof of citizenship or legal residency to even apply to college. An associates degree takes around 2 years and is very expensive. Especially in NYC.

Nothing against you or radiology something against the algorithm/non-division of there's radiology and then there's CB radio and then there's amateur radio and CB radio seems to get the least attention and I really want to get into the CB radio and amateur radio fields they're two separate fields but I want to get into both of them because people under you little eyes them with apps and stuff there are apps out there for both of them but it's making it hard to find them when you find radiology in anything with the word radio in it

Which one is much better MRI tech or Diagnostic Medical Sonographer???
@michaelnguyen3159
@michaelnguyen3159 3 жыл бұрын
I think both is excellent and both have different roles in the hospital. In terms of pay, ultrasound (dms) all the way. But both make good money and I think ultrasound has more patient interaction than MRI. Overall both is solid. MRI techs can specialize in other things too since most were former rad techs and can make more money. It all just depends what’s your goals are.
@hajislover
@hajislover 3 жыл бұрын
US is a lot more schooling than MRI for comparable pay. Do what you enjoy. Try shadowing each. No point in starting a career that you are going to hate. Radiology is huge; there is bound to be something you will enjoy. (and you'll still be able to make a living doing it!)

Don't do this. We don't make shit compared to RN's. That's where the real money's at. And you normally have to take call as an xray tech. It's a pain when you're trying to plan things or raise your family. Where if you're an rn you can work 3x12s and have 4 days off a week. I regret going into this field and wish I would have become an RN. There's too many of us the way it is.
