Above all else…DO NOT SING THE NOTE for the word “free” as TWO NOTES!!!! It is only ONE NOTE! And sing it straight. No runs, and no “Hollywooding” it. It is a solemn song, not a pop song, not an R&B song. You can actually do it justice with a cry in your voice just to give it its proper due respect. By the way, the original was in C, then was later lowered to Bb. So the highest note is an F. The lowest note is Bb under middle C.

I agree that it can be best to not go to crazy on this one but I think the starting note should be catered to the singer. No one in the audience will know what the original starting note is but they will know if you are struggling for the high note. It is important to find what works for your voice and give it the emotion you feel. :).

Use your diaphragm, but don’t be afraid to use your head voice. Sometimes it’s the only way to hit those notes. Open your throat, long vowels.
