When you fail to plan you plan to fail but make it antifragile. I love this 💜

I feel like the work culture in America associates flexibility with no job loyalty and therefore "weak". The generations prior worked often at one or two jobs and stayed for years and this is how we've defined "strong". I like you're perspective on anti-fragility. I think some of the structures we view as "strong" are actually very fragile.

giirl i know i'm late to the video but last Friday i was literally thinking about how to become more resilient, if and how i could somehow work towards it and here comes you... such a wonderful perspective, love the non-pressure way of structuring instead of scheduling. really admire how well you know yourself and make room for it - definitely goals. thanks for the video 💜

I've never heard of this concept of "antifragility." It's like adaptability, but it was interesting to see it framed in this particular way. I liked hearing about having different tasks for different energy levels, because I myself find that my energy level is not the same day to day. Some days it's pretty low, other days it's not. Also, I really like the egg imagery and the maracas!

Thank you very much this is so helpful. In addition to Taleb's book. I also found interesting info in cash flow quadrants by Robert quite so good in constructing a successful and cushioned life style. Thanks for the very wonderful content Ahsante.

I think I needed this video, Ahsante! I've been existing in chaos for years from working in tiny non-profits and politics and having to hustle 2-5 jobs to make it work. People always acted impressed at how I rolled with the punches. I accidentally ended up in a stable (boring) private-sector job right at the beginning of 2020, thinking it was a temporary thing while my part-time creative radio job took off. It ended up being my full-time job for 2 years and the stability really felt nice - but I struggled to figure out what was missing, why things felt off. Was I just missing the adrenaline of politics and media? Should I push to get myself into another role in the company? By pure accident, I was given an opportunity with a lot of upside but limited downside and I'm back to sort of feeding on the chaos. But I hate the narrative I was putting out of having left a stable job for being semi-self-employed again. It's valuable to see my ability to pivot and switch plans as a strength and not just being chaotic. Anyway! Thank you. I just reserved this book at the libary.

Your ability to juggle jobs and your own work is nothing short of heroic! Glad it was a useful perspective :) I'm excited for you to read the book! It was pretty mind-blowing for me, very unconventional ways of thinking about the world

I understand and appreciate how being able to be flexible can be positive in order to adapt and evolve, however I think it is pretty worrisome to accept a state of anti fragility where we are innately fragile. We are ultra dependable and unable to survive by ourselves alone and I think that making governments and political structures (a.k.a. Capitalism!!!!) accountable for our fragile and vulnerable condition is crucial in order not to admit volatile and unstable futures. Our in capability to make long term plans and the predominance of immediacy over longevity and slow proyects and results puts a lot of people under the pressure of having to, as you say, have different income streams, have the flexibility and adaptability to change jobs, being able to work from home, find new and creative ways to generate income… Don’t get me wrong, I do understand where you are coming from and it’s absolutely logical that you would plan for an uncertain future however I do believe that the strategy (at least in my case) comes from a different angle: political mobilization, unionazing, the govermental demand for universal basic income (independent from your productivity or working condition), community support networks, etc. Being fragile is in my opinion, something that we live with not something that we should strive to destroy or control because it is a fuss in our busy lives. I understand where you are coming from and have been following your content for a while but I felt like I needed to express this point, given that I am working in the contemporary arts sector and all your advice is used by professionals in the field to avoid offering minimal wages and dignified working conditions.

Thank you for this thoughtful response! While I agree that capitalism and corporate structures need to be held accountable for the abuses they cause, but I disagree with your premise that we are innately fragile. Being in a precarious position is not the same as being fragile yourself as a person and in how you live your life. As a Black descendent of enslaved Americans, my people would not exist today if we were fragile and weak in the face of abusive systems. This does not excuse the abuse. It says that we need to be adaptive, resilient, and find new opportunities - including new opportunities to weaken, change, and work outside of abusive systems. Relatedly, I don’t think the solution is to revert to a system that anchors an individual’s entire life, health, and likelihood to their employer in order for them to be “secure” when that sense of security has always been false as markets themselves are not secure. That man-made system is what’s fragile (even if the employer provides safe conditions and benefits - which they should regardless), and I don’t think we should accept that fragility. My opinion is that we should have less single points of failure (this is fragility - like your boss/ company being able to singlehandedly ruin your life), and more interdependence - and interdependence is what gets us a social safety net where we are all looking out for our collective needs, rather than putting all the responsibility on single private companies. Nature is adaptive, antifragile, and not meant to be stationary and rigid (hence the saying “be like water”). And we as humans can take cues from natural systems as we work towards collective, yet-unidentified solutions to social problems since the old methods of the 70s won’t get us to where we need to be in our changing future (adrienne maree brown’s theory of emergent strategy has a lot to say on this). Thinking about antifragility on a larger scale was beyond the scope of this video as I’m talking about my individual experience and personal strategies, but it does still apply, and in my opinion is better than accepting fragile systems.
