Usually that quote would be picked apart due to the way I see things nowadays, mainly that bit about "your goat". But those are VERY old ways, no doubt passed down through the generations, when things weren't about "owning" other animals, just surviving and belonging WITH them. Living off the land and fully appreciating the life with and around other animals. When there wasn't any wretched factory farms, and genetically modified filth in regards to ghastly fast food 🤢🤮 Anyway, interesting saying that 👍

BS. Because that is exactly the excuse the ciphers/minions/plebes give when their civil liberties or freedoms are taken. They give IN without any resistance. That saying IS a false premise. Accepting false prophets for the sake of saying "well, we can't change the situation so let's join or accept it" BS. It's a weak excuse.
@phillipd59812 жыл бұрын
@@rider65 You've miss understood the whole meaning. It DOESN'T mean "if you can't beat them, then join them". Take an addict for example, they will do everything to try make there situation better but eventually realise (not all do) that nothing they do makes there life better. The only option is to change something about themselves.... ie. The addiction. This might mean going back into childhood memories to bring up suppressed trauma or any other mindfulness that might be causing the problem. Your interpretation (I think) is "if you can't change an outcome then accept it and change yourself to live with it", which is not what that quote means

When it comes to doubt, rejection, or disrespect I've learned that it's not wrong to be upset but it's a waste of time to target the people who have hurt you. If you have enough self-control and maturity, anger and spite make excellent motivators. When someone hurts me in any way, I try to reframe it as an excuse for self-improvement. At the end of the day, I pushed myself to be stronger at something, and it might not be my goal but if I can prove someone wrong or make the person who hurt me feel bad, that's bonus points.

While I think that it's true that removing emotional attachments to things can make you unconquerable, because you are not hurt if you lose said things, I also think that it's extremely difficult, if not impossible, to not have some sort of emotional attachment to at least one item or person or place. This philosophy reveals that loving someone or falling in love with someone is a risk to oneself, because now you've made yourself vulnerable to being hurt if that person chooses to hurt you (an emotionally strong person generally doesn't care what others think of them, but even said person can be hurt if they are betrayed by someone they care about). You also understand that you will be hurt if that person dies or experiences some form of pain themselves. In other words, to love someone, whether it's a family member, friend, lover, etc., is a selfless act, because you risk your own soul when you are attached to theirs.

The ability of the Only Ring was also to grant Power, and it was that Power, not the Ring itself, that was so desired. The power not only to turn invisible, but also to appear powerfull and dominating to others, power to control other people and change the world as one sees fit. This power is something that everyone in the world secretly desires, even if just a little bit, but as you gain this ability, usually with intentions to do good, to change the world for the better, you lose perception of how to be one without that power, and it's very hard to identify with those you don't understand. This is explored excellently in a video game "Frostpunk", in which you claim complete control over a city that's facing a terrible crisis, and you can change it as you can see fit in order to save it's inhabitants, or realise your visions- or simply avoid "game over" which is when the people of the city are fed up with your rule and exile or execute you. The game gives you a choice to do what's right or what's pragmatic, with morally dubious choices offering higher boost to your city's survivability, economy, and your ability to remain in power. Making morally bad choices gives you practically no repercussions, and being morally good sometimes even punishes you- after all, if you had sent your children into coal mines, your people wouldn't be freezing right now. Being evil seems to be the right way to go. But if you listen to your people, your perspective might change. If you choose to estabilish places for children to stay safe during working hours, instead of sending them to work, you receive a letter with thanks from a mother, who back in London had to send her child to a mine for their family to not starve. If you estabilish a propaganda agency, a engineer will start writing about how you're turning citisens into slaves- and unless you want unrest to rise, you need to exile him, which in the cold and unforgiving world means certain death of a well-meaning man. In the end, Frostpunk is about making the best of a bad situation, and about paying a price for the survival of your city- what and who will you sacrifice to atone for your mistakes?

I’ve definitely learned the value of self-restraint through these type of stoic videos. I used to get so emotionally invested and angry over opinions and other’s words, but taking a step back to acknowledging how I feel and making the right decision has done wonders for me in the long run. I suppose though that staying silent over an important manner isn’t always the solution either. You don’t want people taking advantage of you after all, so speaking up for yourself is just as important, especially if you feel that you’ve been wronged in some way. However, it’s still your choice to let your emotions get the better of you, so if you have to respond, so it in a calm and civilized manner. The latter is admittedly something I still need to work on as my anger and insecurities slip through the cracks every so often. But, with enough practice, I can get a better handle on my outbursts.

Stupid people refuse to do their own research for things and would rather someone tell them and even after they still won't understand or even may continue doing something the same way. (Ignorance is a choice) Always do your own research And figure out why things are done the way their done or why a person might explain something to you a certain way. The average person like the smart person takes all information founded into consideration However, the average person will only take the information given to him and put it to use While the smart person may take the next step up with it. Stupid people you can't group them. We are all stupid in our own ways We all have our own shortcomings,flaws weaknesses Things we aren't good at and or don't work on enough. In the end we are all people on this earth together No matter the environment we find ourselves in Some more comprehensive than others But, the general rules of thumb are mainly all the same. Not sure what else I could add to this lol

Without my knowing, my parents raised me as a Stoic. I have been secure in my mind and not felt insecure throughout my life. An interest in Martial Arts and related philosophies has only added to this. I am unconquerable, the world does not affect me negatively, peoples opinions are irrelevant, material possessions mean nothing, my body is just a meat bag. KRSNA consciousness in conjunction with Stoicism creates freedom. You cannot coerce me, you cannot threaten me, you cannot buy me with power, money, sex or drugs. I feel emotions but are not swayed by them. If you kill me, I still defy you. The Fremen from Dune are a great example of this. The people in the comments who say you cannot live like this are weak and without commitment. They envy those who are truly free. It is not easy but something of worth never is. This does not make me better than everyone, just free and secure in who I am.

@section98092 жыл бұрын
@@decode9160 I guess I would agree. Stoicism does not look on ignorance well. I said weak because if my ignorance is dispelled and I am shown an alternative which costs a bit more in effort and commitment but the payoff is worth it, then it is a sign of weakness to not choose it. Bang for buck. It is subjective, of course. "If someone can prove me wrong and show me my mistake in any thought or action, I shall gladly change. I seek the truth, which never harmed anyone: the harm is to persist in one's own self-deception and ignorance.". Marcus Aurelius

I never knew there was a philosophy based around stoicism... or more accurately where stoicism came from. But I have so much in common with the beliefs. I remember when I first started to lean into it through my own self realizations, when I made a vow to not kill myself... knowing that no matter what I endure or feel, I will always have the final choice to pull that trigger, and it will never be my own finger that does it.

I would say it is our awareness of our ability to choose, that is the most precious collection we have. There are many examples where we don't have a choice other then to intervene (just imagine your child drowning). But in this crucial moment, if you recognize the only option there is, and what is that you have to do (and that is to save your child), instead of running automatically towards it (and thereby missing the full picture - with possible solutions hidden in it), grasping that awareness completely, brings you the maximum chance of success. I am completely aware of my only choice. I am completely aware not all choices I have are alike, and that for me this one particular choice will bring me most pleasure, success, fortune, etc.

This kind of philosophy needs to be taught to kids dealing with school bullies, or even adults dealing with grown up bullies in the form of coworkers or neighbors. Getting angry and emotional towards bullies just makes them bully even more, because they find it really funny (how much of comedy is people getting furious?), and they also get a sense of power and control in being able to control our mind, emotions, actions and reactions like a puppet. So, getting angry and emotional towards bullies just makes things worse and worse. One must remain very calm and very cool, one must remain stoic. Only fight if things have truly crossed the line and it's Deadly serious, and if it is, then be ready to die. Otherwise the wise stay patient and humble. Respect your enemies.
@justintime62422 жыл бұрын
If you think stoicism alone can deflect bullies you don’t understand what a bully is. Stoicism doesn’t stop bullets, knives, or fists🤣people who are miserable enough never stop. Communication is a far more powerful tool. Understand someone’s darkness and pull them from it. Stoicism is “turning the other cheek”. Every bully knows you can always slap the other.
@deadlydee72392 жыл бұрын
@@justintime6242 In my own experience you can expose a bully as a bitch when you show them you are not afraid- call them out- don't engage in their babble- stand firm in what you know to be true. Bitch slap them across their lying lips. They will hide away from you. I agree with the first fellow- only do this if its deadly serious. In my case, it was.
@philj82052 жыл бұрын
You don't have to respect your enemies. It's okay to get angry and emotional. This reads like the motivation behind being calm is to avoid being seen a certain way by others. You shouldn't care what others think. If people find it funny that you are mad, that just means they are terrible people and is in no way a reflection on you. They can think they are controlling you, but getting mad or emotional doesn't mean they are "controlling you like a puppet". It's called being a human being.
