Stoicism for Inner Peace (book): einzelganger.co/innerpeace
Marcus Aurelius pointed out that regardless of the severity of circumstances, there’s always a choice in how we judge them. “Choose not to be harmed-and you won’t feel harmed. Don’t feel harmed-and you haven’t been,” he stated. Marcus’ instruction sounds easy, but it’s difficult to apply if we don’t understand what causes us to feel harmed and when we don’t have the wisdom to make a change. Luckily, the ancient Stoics provide this wisdom.
The work Meditations by Marcus Aurelius contains several ideas that shed another light on the experiences we usually consider harmful. His writings allow us to see our lives differently and change the way we think about the hardships we face, so we can be, as he wrote it, “like the rock that the waves keep crashing over.” This video expands upon several passages from the Meditations that could help us feel less harmed. Don’t feel harmed, and you haven’t been - The Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius

Lying and jealousy is definitely something I've always despised throughout my whole life but I don't think being shameless is bad. People who want you to feel ashamed are only using it as a power tool. When you let go of any shame that you have, your life will actually be much better and productive. It does not make you a bad person at all, yet everybody out there is trying to make you feel ashamed for everything like eating meat or whatnot. Fuck that shit! Live your life and do as you please. Feeling ashamed is good for noone.

"For the mind that expects too much, life is continually at fault" ... excellent 👌
@sterix_gg
@sterix_gg 2 жыл бұрын
So what classifies as too much then I think is the question? Obviously everyone would define that differently but how? How do we weigh an expectation to conclude whether it's too much or not? Somewhere I once heard that expectation equals desire+belief in the same place. If that is the case, then 90% of our expectations are actually just desires. Just us asking for things but not believing in the possibility of having them, hence the eventual disappointment. So I suppose the statement holds truth, sure - don't expect more than what you're able to believe in and you won't be disappointed. But how if not through aiming for more can we get more? How would one grow their faith if not by asking for more, although... we've already done plenty of asking... so I suppose it's time we focused on bolstering our faith, our ability to believe in the possibility of having what we want, whatever that may be. Because desire without belief is a contradicting state, one which feels anything but good.

Really so my thoughts at 8 years old made my brother rape me now my thoughts told me if you want to keep alive shut down all memories . then at 20 i got married and found a man that did not want to hurt me . That woke up the beast called flashbacks which came with rage blinding pain and decades of hate . But yes thoughts are what makes life happen . He was 17 I was 8 . When the flashbacks came I called him and told him he called me a liar mom told me she still loved her son . So I cut them all out . My rapist " brother " has found god and told him sorry but still has not told me sorry . My oldest brother is trying to get us together for a "family" reunion . Really ?

@montacap I have a similar case of ptsd but we really did shape our memory loss by our thoughts and emotions by repressing them so we don’t hurt as much, there’s no drug out there can fix this kind of trauma, it’s time and better thoughts, the longer we spend hell bent on the event that caused us suffering the longer we continue to suffer, I’ve learned now to move on but I have little memory of life because I chose to let go of the past, at least I’m here to live and to improve and I live in the moment now, something I struggled with before

Anticipation of pleasure leads to addiction because it sets in motion the expectation that the thing anticipated will automatically provide pleasure. I am just starting to really learn how to use spirituality not just for discovering the transcendent dimension within me but also use this capacity to help my poisonous or cancerous tendencies to evolve. When I was younger I accepted any treatment I received from anyone. The moment I believed I deserved to be treated better endless amounts of suffering entered my life. You can try to avoid some misfortune by surrounding yourself with people that will likely respect you but that isn’t a guarantee that they will and the general population will still treat you as they see fit. Now that I accept that how people treat me is their right and just a reflection of who they are not who I am I do feel more at ease.

I am diagnosed with PTSD years ago, and I've stopped getting treatment because I don't feel any better and instead I tried walking and spending more time on nature. I stayed at a countryside in the Philippines for almost 6months, slowly and slowly I found my peace and I realized that the person inside this skull is different from the person outside of it; so slowly I tried controlling my thoughts by meditating and taking a long walks to the hill, and picking woods on my wayback, (I didn't just find peace I also have a wood to cook my meals and keep me warm 😂) that's how and what I did to get sane, to take control over my thoughts and mind.

You can feel that way and tell yourself that but if the trauma is serious it may build into a breakdown and become worse later than it originally would have been. In my experience processing it healthier than choosing to not be harmed.

Yeah, it's a kinda fine line between acceptance and victim blaming. If people who went through certain circumstances experience the same kind of problems afterwards, is it really a problem of those people's minds? I think it's good to work on both, getting more resilient, but also changing the circumstances when possible
@robyndawn

@@incanthatus8182 good point. I use to feel really ashamed from victim blaming from Christianity and even new ageism or secular people with no experience of what I deal with that its just mind over matter. This would have had the same affect but I'm numb to it now and keep those people at a distance. I just accept health issues and being an hsp isn't always a choice. Perhaps that's the best I can do not to be harmed. Interesting topic.

In some degree this goes for aging, sickness, diet, lifestyles... If you worry about something it will grow. Of you forget or give no attention to something it will usually shrink. I have been thinking of this in terms of how some people can live as drug addicted , homeless, thieves. Yet seem to live such a destructive life for years without much visible effect. I have come to feel that atleast a good portion of these people exist in this way because they do not have shame of it. And in alot of ways actually enjoy what they do. But the addicts who hate themselves and feel ashamed, alot of this type will deteriorate quickly.

I need to watch this every day! I can accept some things that I can’t control, but my mind is still bothered when people close to me, like family, intentionally cause harm. If a stranger insults me, it’s easy to shrug it off. But when a family member rips me off financially, for example, it gets to me. I have to accept that some people are shameless, and sometimes those people will be family members.

I try to be a stoic and it does help me in times of crisis. I come from a family of perennial worriers and that would also explain the predisposition towards heart disease and suicide which also runs in my family. Reading philosophy and meditation has helped me get through things which would’ve broken me before. I guess you just have to learn to let go and be as least resistant to things and go with the flow.

There are times in my life where I have consciously made myself upset about something that I felt, for a brief moment, that I could have chosen to not be upset about. There are times I have been genuinely upset (lack of sleep, an already bag day and other factors play roles), but I can remember a few occasions where being upset was a choice, or being upset later upon ruminating about it became a choice. It’s easy now, in the late hours of night when I am relaxed, to tell myself I can choose differently in the future, and sometimes on good days, I do, and it does get easier the more I do it. I cherish the days I am able to choose not to be upset over injustices, unfairness and entitled people trying to take advantage of me, and with practice, I look forward to being able to say “No” and eventually not be bothered when someone starts yelling at me because they refuse to hear my “No” and to just calmly repeat myself until they either give up trying to manipulate me or I choose to walk away from the conflict without trying to explain myself or people please. I eventually want to be able to say “no” to someone without leaving things open to negotiation or explaining myself, and if they get mad about that, to see it as their problem, not mine.

My life experience with "good" and "bad" pain is especially true for pregnancy. Individuals can act in any way they find plausible, and this allows them to accrue benefits or suffer costs, depending on the circumstances. The responsibility that our actions necessitate is the only true weapon we can exploit in order to antagonize the nefariousness of the world around us. Marcus Aurelius realized the power of that weapon and that helped him become an exemplary emperor despite adversity and despite his weaknesses. That is what makes him a respectful example for all of us.

I think the "choice" of being harmed or not gets predecided during our childhood. The need for love and acceptance can be so overwhelming if one did not receive those things as a child. As we grow older we are told to repress those feelings and emotions and that makes us angry and bitter deep down. Everytime someone insults us, those angry emotions instantly tell us "not this time", and we lash out, or worse, we supress it further and get even more resentful. Trying to not feel that way can not be a solution because at the end one is still not feeling loved and accepted and therefore ignoring their need for those things will only spiral one into a vicious cycle of hate and resentment towards the world. I don't have the answer to what we must do, all I know is that we will not stop untill we get what we want 😔

I don't know if Goggins have read stoic philosophy. But if he hasn't - and he has come to the same conclusion as people like Marcus Aurelius through introspection - that makes stoic philosophy ever more solid; like a more universal Truth. When a perspective survives over time and over cultural space, then - to me - it seems much more legit.

I agree to an extent. However some people WILL take advantage of you and want to hurt you and you should not let this kind of thinking let you just endure the punishment of others. There are times when you need to resist rather than just be passive to other people, sometimes you need to get angry. Also this kind of thinking can lead people to wrongly choose to bury their emotions and pretend like things havent affected them when sometimes you need to be honest about your feelings and deal with them. I think its important to remember that Marcus Aurelius was an emperor and his perspective is wildly different to us who are the ones who are in many ways subservient to the powers that be. It was in his interest to keep people in line.

Interestingly, while Seneca encouraged people to get rid of anger completely, he did allow people to "appear angry". Stoicism appealed to everybody, not just emperors like Marcus Aurelius. Epictetus was a slave, for instance, and Zeno was a merchant. Diogenes the Cynic was made a slave at one point in his life, and Socrates himself was under the yoke of the 30 tyrants. Seneca had to put up with Nero, and in the end was ordered to commit suicide.

Dissociation will create more disease. If Marcus Aurelius wants us to be like a rock the water crashes on, we are left broken down into sand over a lifetime. The Tao teaches us it is best to "be like water." Taking on the shape of the circumstances we are within allows proper reaction and response to those circumstances. If the container becomes hot, so does the water. If the container becomes cold, so dies the water. Water takes the path of least resistance and adapts instantly. Only when we fail to adapt to the current circumstance are we suffering. Life may call us to anger or sadness in one moment, and this is to our benefit. Anger can provide the energy to overcome adversity. Sadness can allow us to accept closure. When someone remains stuck in a holding pattern of a circumstance which is no longer relevant, this is the same exact suffering as failing to adapt to the current circumstance. Feel everything, for there is wisdom to be found in every experience.
