So as one of those Maiden fans that does love the later stuff as well, to put it simply I'm very self aware on how repetitive some of their post reunion stuff is. @@Bedrockbrendan Same with me. It's a lot of the instrumentality that I just love about the newer stuff. it's like they took the philosophy of writing they had with songs like the duelist on powerslave and made it their entire style. My only complaint is the obsession with the idea of having the majority of an album be long epics and if it's a miss (lost in a lost world for example) it's a massive drag for all of the 6-10 minute runtime. With the Foo Fighters, I feel like at least a sizeable portion, though I couldn't tell you exactly how much, of why their fans are generally so chill has to be that the most public-facing aspects of the band are Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins. Like, when you have those two sweethearts who are just always super down to earth and real with absolutely everyone, I feel like it kind of just naturally tends to filter down to everyone else. Also, while they've certainly made great music, it's not like they completely revolutionized or created a whole genre the way some of the other bands on this list did (heck, like Nirvana), so it's probably a lot harder to hold that kind of elitism for their stuff. They just hit that perfect balance of being mainstream enough that you can't pat yourself on the back just for being into them but not so popular that you hear them everywhere you go, and good enough that you can wholeheartedly enjoy them but with enough "meh" in their discography that most people will probably have songs of theirs that they love, like, are indifferent to, and probably some they'd rather not bother with.

My favorite band is DT, and... Scenes From A Memory is not perfect because of 2 moments in 2 different songs, IMO: the moaning in Home is unnecessary, at least unnecessarily long; and a minute section in Dance of Eternity is just boring. The Astonishing is good, but I've only listened it once ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And damn, Labrie is a sad thing in music history. His voice _should_ be better, even at his age, but well, we all know the odyssey. Petrucci's riffs are very boring on the new record. That's akward, because his riff on Distance Over Time are fucking amazing. And that instrumental sections that just repeat a line over and over again, like in A View From The Top of The Wolrd, are very anoying. For me, the worst thing a song can be is repetitive, no matter how cool the idea is. I don't give a shit to "stablishing the theme that will never appear again", it negatively affects the structure of the song. Well, sorry, I was just trying to criticize my favorite band...

You almost touched on something when talking about Bowie and mentioning Prince, and similarly with EVH: there seems to be a huge number of people who are suddenly super fans of someone immediately after they pass away. People who previously either didn't care or (in my experiences with people critiquing music tastes as a kid at school/uni) hated their respective styles loved them from the day they died, and to me that's a really negative element of these fan bases. A few extra bands I’ll add: Pearl Jam - as a part of this fanbase, we are passionate and devoted.. and kind of obsessive. This can be fun or kind of off-putting. Depends. A tier. Very faithful. RHCP - most are actually pretty cool, but some can be very annoying/defensive. Since it’s such a big fandom there are bound to be stinkers, but overall even though I don’t *love* RHCP their fan base is full of perfectly fine people. B tier, could talk me into A tier but I’m sticking with B. ARTV is a great example of a “good” RHCP fanatic. Creed - very brave people. But so are tight-rope walkers. D. Mike Patton fans - overall good but the kind of guys who’ll tell you that you don’t “understand” every Mr. Bungle album unless you’ve heard them five times. No thank you! Solid C tier. Megadeth - half are B/C tier, the other half are F. It’s volatile. The Doors - we get it. You smoke weed. (Barely) C tier band; D tier fans.

I think you called The Doors, Megadeth, and Mike Patton’s respective fan bases perfectly. I have had bad experiences with douchey, condescending Pearl Jam fans, but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you’re not one of them. No strong opinion on RHCP fans, as you said, they cover a wide range. As for Creed, they are much like Nickelback in that you don’t see too many outspoken fans, but the haters are so in your face and predictable that it makes you want to respect the band and their fans just on principle.
@xXMachineGunPhillyXx2 жыл бұрын
@@someguy7424 somehow the Pearl Jam subreddit is incredibly accepting.. unless you say “I hate Binaural.” But they are in no way toxic to the casual listener or new fan that wants to enjoy the band. I feel like with Pearl Jam and RHCP fans, both bases can be defensive but I think the key difference is that a lot of Pearl Jam fans, due to the band’s driven efforts to cater to their diehards (among them suing motherf*cking ticketmaster to make their tickets more affordable) a lot of them can be powerfully defensive and loyal. Both bands get dissed on social media, but I guess I can understand a fan passionately defending a band that has been actively protective of them (Pearl Jam). I feel like RHCP fans feel similarly - the only reason I dock them a tier is that, like Star Wars or The Dallas Cowboys, there’s SO many of them that the quality inevitably dilutes a little. I also feel like 🌶️ fans can get defensive a little *too* easily, but to be fair that band gets a lot of hate in certain circles. Creed fans and Nickelback fans , if there are any un-ironic ones from WAY back, know that it’s hopeless to really *defend* them, I think. Which is why, for me, antagonizing them is kicking them while they’re down. No point. I’ll spew a relatively mild take and say at least Creed fans can claim a few solid tracks by the band; I have no idea what band people are hearing when they say Nickelback is good. They’ve been **awful** since Silver Side Up - at best.

As someone who's very active in the Queen fandom, even I wouldn't put us at A, mainly because of the new wave of Teen Girl fans that came after the Bohemian Rhapsody movie. They treat the band more like characters in their comics rather than musicians, and only ever care about the hits. I watched the change in the fandom from before and after the movie and we were so chill before that period and would actually dive into their older more obscure material and recognise the diverse styles into Progressive Rock, Heavy Metal, Folk, Avant-garde, et cetera. Now, you go to any Queen forum (especially Amino), and you're see a bunch of uwu fan art, unfunny comics, and very little music talk (usually about the hits) and whenever someone actually tries to do a deep dive and analyse what made their music so interesting, they seem very disinterested and dismissive of it. Yuck. Love the video.

Using the Waking The Cadaver Logo for Black Metal got me worked up real fast 😂

Most of these I agree with you on, probably my only difference is I would also put Nirvana fans in the F-tier. Granted, I grew up during the height of the grunge craze so I saw their cult-like devotees at their absolute worst, but seriously, they were like a bizarre combination of Jehova’s Witness-style obsessive evangelism and full on Deus Vult crusader syndrome. If you listened to older metal during that time period, even if it was the old school, anti-glam stuff out of Exodus or Testament, you were openly mocked and called a phony. Little has changed since, only now there are more casual listeners who have a more laid back attitude about people not liking them, but their “woe is me” Gen X cult following are just as annoyingly obsessive as ever, and I’m freaking part of Gen X.

Some Nightwish fans seem to be toxic but more within the fanbase, mainly STILL arguing about the lead vocalists.

Was going to say that too. I do prefer Tarja but the level of hate Annette got was pretty bad at times. Most people seem to have accepted Floor at this point but I'm sure there's a few who don't.
@wdw2540 Жыл бұрын
@@LongLiveRockAnRoll In MHO, Tarja sounds better in the studio but Floor is a better live performer. Annette simply didn't have the demanding vocal chops needed to pull off Nightwish music live. Nothing wrong with that, because most female vocalists couldn't perform Nightwish music well either.

Ok Bob Dylan fan here. Respectfully, saying focusing on story telling is the wrong way to look at music to me just doesn't sit well with me at all. Everyone listens to music for different reason and storytelling is on of the main reason i listen.

"I have never encountered toxic Iron Maiden fans." I have met some REAL toxic Maiden fans in my life, trust me they are out there. As a side note, as a massive black metal fan, while I do disagree with your take on the music, I 100% agree with you on the unjustifiably elitist attitude the fans have. Love me some black metal, but those fans make thrash elitists look tame, don't even get me started on death metal elitists...

I agree with you man. I've been black metal fan since when I was 11yo but never been racist, elitist or fascist (it would be a paradox since I am eastern european lol) and don't recognize myself with the elitists there. I also love Iron Maiden but not their older fans: they literally asphalted me for saying that I don't hate Maiden latest album. Well I understand that their glory years are gone but they should shut up and leave the younger fans like me have our chance to enjoy some maiden without being criticized everywhere. Do they have nostalgy of the old days where maiden where better? Time for them to lock themselves in their house and listen to their older records.

As a massive Rush fan who is a millennial, i can agree with the statement that the hardcore elitists and boomers are the ones that sometimes (not all the times) ruin the fan base. From what I know of being to Rush concerts on the R40 tour, there definitely are the crazies, but they are a very small portion of the Rush fandom. I'd put us in bottom A tier.

I'm a xennial who's listened to them since 2008 and just turned 42 so I can understand that. The whole "If it ain't dad rock, it sucks!" vibe can get toxic at times.

Also a massive Rush fan, I agree. In my experiences the younger fans like our age tend to be awesome and the older fans its 50/50 either they're super nice and just happy to see someone younger into Rush or they're elitist snobs. Overall its one of the better band fanbases I've been into. I listen to a lot of other prog bands and I've found Genesis and King Crimson fans to be worse in my experiences.

Totally agree with the GWAR fandom. Everyone I have taken to go see GWAR always says the crowd and fans were the friendliest people they have met at a concert.

I don't really care anymore, so...: Chris Cornell was better than Freddie Mercury. Freddie's voice felt unnaturally smooth, in a way it starts to feel a bit unsettling. Chris' voice felt more real and normal.

An interesting description of Freddie's voice, but yeah, I'd rather listen to Chris Cornell honestly lol
