Doing my M.Ed. at The Citadel and seeing Dr. Ortlieb not just sit in, but participate, shows his character for understanding the school that he leads. If that does not inspire a student to want to better the educational system... I don't know what would.

It was very informative, Thank you. Would you please also clarify the processes through which one faculty becomes The Dean of Graduate Education without extensive "Teaching Experiences" or the admistative experience of an "Academic/School Dean"? Also it is the same person responsible for appointing the Associate Dean of Grad Education at Different Schools? Also, Is there a specific length of time for holding such key administrative positions? or can it be like the Supreme Court appointments for Judges here .... namely, for life! It would be appreciated.

How would one chart their course to becoming a dean? It sounds inter-disciplinary but presumably some things ways heavier than others. Good talk, by the way.

Thanks for asking. I feel making the most of leadership opportunities that arise and leveraging those towards new positions in and outside of your current employer permits a fast track to career climbing. This formulaic approach isn't what I suggest, but more what I see. Often times, people can create their own pathways to success through innovation and entrepreneurialism.

@@EvanOrtlieb1 thank you for the timely and succinct response. The ability to lead appears to be the crux here, which makes sense, given the nature of the role. One last thing: do most deans start in education and work their way up or do they come from outside, like from business or some other sector?
