I started in May of this year with no expectations of anyone watching. I just film stuff I'm doing and talk about it, mostly because it's like doing stuff with friends. The experience has been great; instead of my usual boring end of year document for work, i made a KZbin video. The board of directors loved it. The experience I gained this year was immensely helpful for this. Your advice has been great, so thanks for doing what you do.

The most inspirational part of this video was the fact that you were walking in such frigid temperatures. I keep wanting to do a walking video, but I live in upstate New York so it’s also cold here this time of year so I just kept saying I’ll wait till spring and I’ll have those outside videos, but you have just inspired me to tough it out and just do one! I have faced my fear of speaking in front of the camera. It’s getting a little easier, but I am over worrying about that now my concern is just having good ideas and content and growing my channel. If you can get out and about in the cold weather then so can I! Also, I am hoping that when I start getting negative comments, I can just remember that at least they gave me some view hours if they watched it and responded even if it’s negatively.
@RobtheMaritimer15 күн бұрын
Dress warm! My biggest problem when filming out in the cold is my hands get cold, so I need gloves. But have to take the gloves off to press record, get notes from my pocket, etc... then put them back on. Also, any gear that you have to carry, like the mini tripod I carry, will get VERY cold especially if hanging on to it for a long time. So even if I don't need the gloves while recording, I definitely like to have them for the walk home :-) These are the things I've learned by just doing it... and that's the bottom line... you have to just go out and do it. The first time you do you will realize there are things you forgot or would have done better. The only way to learn exactly what you need is to try. You'll get it! Best of luck to you :-)

Hey Rob, it's been amazing to see your camera game get better and better on the unscripted videos. I've been struggling with filler words....I don't like it but then again nobody has complained every time I say "uh." Hi Rob - thanks for your encouragement, I've been binging on your helpful videos! It's been great to learn from you as a new over-50 KZbinr. Question: How do you feel about KZbin shorts? For some reason, I seem to be getting subscribers this way, more than my longer videos. I'm glad about it, but am puzzled why! 🤣 Do you have a hypothesis?
@RobtheMaritimer18 күн бұрын
It really depends on your content... the type of videos you make and what they're about. Some people's content ports well from Shorts to long form, whereas others does not. If you've found a formula that works, it's best to stick with it!!

@RobtheMaritimer16 күн бұрын
I totally understand... when your set is different every time that can be time consuming to get setup for each video. If it's possible, try to find a "typical setup" you can use most often, and have your camera/lights/mic and sewing equipment in position for that setup. That'll make it much easier to just "press record" and make a video when the inspiration hits! Best of luck with it! :-)

Hi Rob. Still a big fan of your channel, and down to earth talking style. How would you schedule to start a KZbin channel with a full time job and two small kids? I think it’s really hard to find the time and energy.
@RobtheMaritimer17 күн бұрын
The short answer is, "Do only what you can". With two small kids and a full time job I would probably spend an hour or two in the morning on videos before I had to go to my job... and again a couple hours after the kids went to bed. Everyone is different though... you have to find what works for you. You may not have the time other people have to devote to it, but if you're passionate about it you'll find the time, somehow. You just have to be creative. If you can only spare a couple hours a week, spend those hours wisely. There's a lot of learning in the beginning so that's what you'll spend time on at first. Best of luck to you!

Loved the video .. what are you using to hold your camera/ phone while you walk?
@RobtheMaritimer17 күн бұрын
The camera I'm using is my iPhone 14 Pro Max and I have it on a small tripod. I made a video about how I do these here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/opLbl4h8ecuniZosi=I57GRt_7Cm9YZzqz

My hardest part is talking to the camera or thinking I hit record and it’s not on… I’m using my phone. I don’t mind that a lot because it gives me practice. I also need to make videos to get more female viewers because I’m getting more males than females 75/25. Overall I’m happy with my progress but I’m hoping to get better.

In this video I used my iPhone 14 Pro Max in regular video mode, 4k 30 fps.

My biggest challenge is keeping the videos small, tend to put a bit of footage that I don't want to "waste".... ;) and it can deviates a bit from the main message or become a bit repetitive...
@RobtheMaritimer16 күн бұрын
I completely get that! you can always save other footage for B-Roll in future videos... but it really is important to keep the story flowing in your videos and that usually means cutting out a lot of good footage :-)

Hi Rob, nice to see your video’s! I am Bregje, 45 years old from the Netherlands. I have for several years the wish to start my youtube channel. But I had always the idea I needed the most expensive equipment. A camera, light and sound things. But I have a problem. I have a iPhone 11 and a Macbook with mcmontery ios . But when I want to use iMovie for editting, its doesn’t work. Its not compattible witch each other. So I want to start so badley and it doesn’t work. Can you give me some tips how I can solve this?? Thank you so much for your help . Greetings Bregje
@RobtheMaritimer8 күн бұрын
Hello Bregje, and thanks for watching! It sounds like you might need to update either iMovie or macOS. Ensure your MacBook is running the latest version of macOS Monterey and check for iMovie updates in the App Store. If it still doesn’t work, try restarting your devices and re-installing iMovie. I hope that helps :-)

The language barrier. I'm a French speaker. I think that if you want to monetize your channel, it's much better to do it in English. I speak English well, but do I speak it well enough to make videos? Big question. That's a challenge in addition to the ones you mention. Greetings from Montreal!
@RobtheMaritimer17 күн бұрын
Great question! I think you could absolutely be successful in English even if your primary language is French... many people like accents that are different than their own and I truly believe there is an audience waiting to be discovered by anyone willing to put in the effort. Best of luck to you!

So approximately how much does a channel with 30k subs make?
@RobtheMaritimer18 күн бұрын
It's impossible to answer that question... could be anywhere from $200 per month to $5,000 per month or even much more. It completely depends on the channel owner's business model :-)
@don711718 күн бұрын
@@RobtheMaritimer Thanks for the reply. Can you please explain the differences in the business models that create a range of $200 - $5000? Is $200 doing nothing besides posting videos with ads at the start, vs $5000 is having successful affiliate links? Or is there more to it than that?
@RobtheMaritimer17 күн бұрын
@@don7117 There is far more to it than that... it's impossible to generalize. Even with KZbin Adsense (the money you earn directly from KZbin), that can vary widely depending on the type of content you make and the number of views each video gets. RPM (Revenue per 1000 views) can vary from $2 up to $30 depending on the content. Financial, fitness and dating types of content tend to earn the highest RPM whereas vlogs or "day in the life" videos earn much less. But having said all that, most successful youtubers are successful because of a business they run outside of youtube but use youtube as a lead generator... perhaps they sell coaching or courses or fitness plans, etc. KZbin Adsense alone doesn't typically earn a full time income unless you get a million views per month or more.... regardless of how many subscribers you have.

There are lots of skills to learn... maybe just pick one to start and focus on that (video editing perhaps)... then later move on to the next thing :-) Best of luck!
