I use the confession booth to add backstory to my followers. One follower(who I married in game), used to be a follower of Shamura(he confesses doing missionary work for them), his brother(who wanted to marry me, but I rejected), a follower of Leshy, they left their respective leaders, but were separated in Anura, my husband questions occasionally about The One who Waits and it's intentions with me, him, his brother, and the rest of the cult. Nowadays he's the Tax collector, and looks dapper while extorting the masses. Edit: Had to come back after the latest update dropped, we can now recruit Aym and Baal, and the Bishops.

ngl every time Shen faced a Shamura-controlled follower my heart ached since I know from experience that's the _one_ kind of Bishop interference you actually _can_ avoid entirely by simply quitting and reloading the game as soon as the "fight" begins (since the autosave counts it as a "completed" interaction even if none of your followers died, and thus so will Shamura.)

i tried using omnipresence to avoid that interaction when i got to that point in the story (pretty recently, actually.) however, the follower turned against me *immediately exploded & died after shamura left the room.* edit: i thought shamura exploded him. nope, it was my level 10 follower (also my first one), Abby, converted into a bomb demon (Fornax).
