Quick correction: I mention Mel wearing the ring again at the end, but she's actually wearing it for the entire series, and removes it for the first time at the end. As a note for her character, it expresses finally moving on from everything negative we discussed briefly here. I’m usually impressed by your videos, but this one blew me away. As someone who’s in the process of minimizing my consumption of pleasures (which is hard considering I’m a recovering addict) to make it easier to apply myself to my passions, it struck a chord. The way you laid things out with your loose equation was a brilliant way to explain things. I continue to look forward to every one of your videos

Thank you so much for the kind words. The section where I spoke about giving in to vices was in reference to addiction within my family, and a lot of the traits which led to it that I share with them. Some of the days which left the deepest impact in my life were those where I watched them struggle, be forced to confront their problem, and make it through to the other side. As someone random on the internet, I have no idea how much weight this statement can carry, but I'm proud of your commitment to change, and I hope it takes you where you wish to be, and that there will be a good balance of pleasures and passions along the way

A person's neuro-personality is what determines one's alignment to either masculinity or feminity, e.g. XNTJ is a 'largely' masculine neuro-personality type/brain-formation. INFJ is odd; the gender-focus (masculinity/feminity dynamics) is in reverse, depending on the gender and yet it is still [consciously] malleable (depending on the individual and the current situation; mirroring/personality adaptation can aid one to better adapt to a given situation with success, i.e. with little needles resistance). Evolutionarily speaking, the psychological dynamics of feminity-masculinity aids individual units (within the human colony) to better organise themselves within a 'team-structure', i.e. between support and leader (support-feminity[not mindless obedience, do not confuse the two or suffer geuine narcissit-abuse or borderline... masculinity-leadership or duty-bound. Both 'gendered-role' require intelligence and responsibility; gained/acquired experience and 'humanity for the group'). _______ At the core of 'femininity' (its essence) is "support". 'Masculinity' is to be "goal-driven" and "dutiful" (both necessitates intelligence and the absence of NPD; otherwise deranged animosity and cruelty is inevitable-both are counterproductive to 'teamwork/dualism/ying-Yang/feminity-masculinity'). This is the ying and Yang that makes the 'team work in harmony'. Feminity-masculinity psychological dynamics is needed to make a team of both genders, evolutionarily speaking (pertaining to the purpose of that psychological feature, i.e. feminity-masculinity). To be "supportive"/feminity one must be a cautious team-player. To be supportive does not excuse or imply "lacking a will of your own" (the INFP neuro-psychology/brain-formation is ideal for a supportive-role. INFJ brain-formation can freely alternate between both gendered-role, more so than any other). "Acting girly" is just an 'act'- a deceitful one. On masculinity, being overly [irrationally] aggressive, hypersensitive/insensitive (like a robot) is a [possible] sign of a mental disorder - it is toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity is irrational animosity (thinking and behaving like a volatile neanderthal) and it destroys sustained teamwork. Narcissitic-personality disorder is the bane of 'humanity'/harmonic-symbiosis (in every context). Positive masculinity requires one to be intelligent/rational (not having a pathological disregard for rationality and reality), and to have sufficient levels of 'humanity'; humanity can be displayed/expressed intellectually or socially/emotionally. Positive-masculinity has no tolerance for geuine narcissitic-personality-disorder (NPD)/unfair abuse and unfair-cruelty. Positive-masculinity optimises whatever it does. Positive-feminity lessens hardship, it intellectually cultivates and inspires teamwork via harmony. Positive-feminity does not support narcissitic-personality-disorder (it supports the fight against it instead). Positive-feminity - it supports, it facilitates and it is guided by intelligence and maturity (not having a pathological disregard for rationality and reality).

I never expected to see Arcane in a video here, but it makes sense. Arcane is quite a layered story under all the beautiful animation, action, and music. The discussion on Jayce was pretty interesting, and I hope we will see videos on other characters from Arcane. My favorite character is Powder/Jinx with her descend into madness as a victim and villain of the world that made her.

To live is to change, or so I believe. If you take it from the molecular level, you're not the same person you were 3 days ago. But we're not talking about that here, are we? No, we're talking about our minds. When we have an ideal, we have a certain understanding of the world and it's rules. As time passes, our understanding grows and we must always reevaluate what our ideals are. There ara many ways to do this, but I choose to follow to path of what I DON'T want to become. By focusing on what I don't want to be, I have a path with many options and possibilities open. I believe we must be flexible, lest our own ideas strangle us down. The pleasure and vices are things that we must always keep are very tight leash on, least they consume us, like you pointed out. Yet, we must have them in some measure otherwise we end up imploding from internal pressure. And that is only talking about our own person, we have to take in account how the world affects us was well. Sometimes stopping to re-access the situation and meditate to see if the path we're right now is the path that will lead us to our goals and ideals is better than just stomping towards we believe is the beast based on decision we took with a previous understanding. Ps: I think you would find it interesting to see the story of Viktor and Jayce in the game. Their game versions are very different from their arcane incarnations but some story beats have played the same, yet with very different results.

Yeah the base "something" necessary for change is what makes change so scary for me. Not so much the change we evoke though, more like the change that life forces on us. You never really know what that base something life demands is. Sick video as always bro, really appreciate the work that goes into this channel

At the end of the video you said something that I've already struggled a lot in the past. You've mentioned about the costs that emerge as necessary for us to accomplish our goals and to change our lives/world for the better (for what we think is best) and how that cost in many cases is ourselves, our identity and who we are. When I was younger I dreamed of changing the world like Jayce and thought it would be possible if I worked hard enough, but as long as I tried it came clear to me that if I didn't change who I was I wouldn't be able to achieve what I wanted. And facing that I decided to not sacrifice myself out of fear about what could happen. I thought that I could go to far along to tell if I was really losing myself and to be stopped in a downhill path in my life. I've decided to want a little less, to put aside "MY HEXTECH" at least for a while and try to change myself and the world around me in a more conservative, steady, safe and slow rhythm. Maybe one day I can be wise enough to change things like "MY HEXTECH" could change. But instead of doing like Jayce and going in a full throttle way, I think I can have "MY HEXTECH" as the endpoint of a life out of little progresses. Maybe Heimerdinger should have been the one to try the HEXTECH instead of Jayce. Heimer had time enough in his life to know when things were getting dangerous, but he avoided it in order to preserve safety at all times. What I'm trying to propose is that the Hextech itself could have really been used as a tool for changing the world as Jayce envisioned, but not by the hand of the young and dreamer Jayce that despite all his knowledge, intelligence and good will was too naive about the world and how life can change us. Being smart blinded Jayce for what he didn't knew about people, about society, politics and morality. Maybe a version of Jayce 10 years older (or even younger than that) can use hextech to really improve the day to day life of the citizens of Piltover and Zaun that he supposedly cared so much for. @ProfessorViral that's only one point all of everything that I liked in your video, thanks for the content. It was a bit hard to digest everything that was pointed out because I'm not a native english speaker, but I very do appreciate this kind of videos. And I loved the title "Becoming What we hate". I think it is a very specific situation that happens to people, and it happened to me too sometimes. And everytime that I've seen myself becoming smt that I used to hate I've grown to be more comprehensive to people. I've noticed that usually the things and persons that we hate are just dragged to be like they are by pressure and the others factors in the video.

First time watcher of your videos and I am very glad the algorithm led me to stumble here! You have a really interesting blend of bringing in the analytical and the personal and I’m definitely going to check out more of your content. One thing though, I feel like it doesn’t do justice to Arcane’s brilliant writing of female characters to just reduce Mel to an ‘evil temptress’ stereotype. She is more than just representing power and pleasure to Jason, since she is her own character too. I think there’s also a parallel relationship going on between Victor and Sky - she represented the human connection and family Victor could have had with her which he literally lost the chance to pursue because of his fixation with hex tech as well. You could say that both women represented different kinds of ‘distractions’ to these men, one was a negative distraction that led Jayce down a worse path, one was a positive ‘distraction’ that might have kept the pair more balanced and in touch with their humanity. Just discussing the negative distraction Mel had on Jayce seems a bit one sided, when Arcane always balances a potentially negative stereotype (in this case the evil temptress woman) with a more positive kind of character (in this case Sky) because Arcane is just good at writing different kinds of people, not stereotypes. (Sorry this comment ended up way longer than I intended, normally I don’t comment at all but you seemed interested in hearing different povs so thought I’d offer my 2 cents).
@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral Жыл бұрын
Thats a super valid criticism for sure. One problem I have is separating topics to too harsh a degree. Mel is certainly more than just what I said here, but to keep the video a decent length I had to cut further discussion of her on her own, outside of the relation to Jayce. There a whole analysis to be made of her pressures alone, and the decisions she makes along the way. They made me understand why she treats Jayce how she does, and that makes her very well written for her additions to a great story. A valid point, I'll try to keep more of those elements to be more fair in the future!

 @ProfessorViral I am also a 1st time channel watcher with a couple of videos "under my belt". I also had some apprehension with Mel's limiting "description", and unease with Jacy's ideals, distraction(s) and pressures - and just how these, vibe. One thing that especially made me pause was the contrasting responses of Mel & Heimerdinger, both come from unimageable excess, 'practical immortality' & 'unbelievable wealth'. I think that Jacy's ideals and/or passions are his downfall, specifically his nonnegotiable pursuit of 'magic', which (in-universe) has leveled civilizations and importantly is power reliant on beneficence in it's exercise. Jay understands this, I think even if Jay was never "distracted" - the inherent power creating 'labor' efficiencies (supply-side) or mass worker emancipation (inherently political). Noone let 'a monster' grow for profits but for Piltover - the place of progress, under it's stewardship. Speaking at the council at any moment after his invention is theatre, his membership is inevitable & necessary...sorry, but his ideals were pursuant of industrialized, technocratic expansion of 'progress for it's own sake'...under the world's trade "superpower(e)" sovereign, that was 'founded' to do exactly this.

As a Runeterra lorehead, I can say that Mel's mother is not THE leader of Noxus. From what we can see, she seems to be higher up in her own warband, making her a captain. If not that, she's probably assiociated with the Trifairian Legion, the elite force that serves the Trifairix, the three leaders of Noxus. You're assuming of being a general was pretty close! I feel like to add on to this, near the end of Clark Elieson’s Nostalgia video he said “To truly be what you are, you must not understand what it is to be you.” Or something like that. I feel like that sentiment really applies to this because yourself is always changing through pressure and ideals and power, that you become something different in each moment, and I think you explored it a bit with “How can I love myself is my self is not a solid thing?” or something like that. And so to love ourselves we try to understand ourselves and thus become vessels, as you described, becoming something unrecognizable from our actual selves. Or maybe I have it completely wrong lol idk

I have to say, while the motivation of his peace plan might have come from some honest beneficent impulse. The actual peace plan was first world garbage, Everything in that peace plan would have undermined Silco's industrial base (Stopping shimmer production, not merely de-militarizing shimmer production. Shimmer has therapeutic uses). Turning over the Hextech Gemstone leaving the "Independent" Zaun completely vulnerable to Piltovan violence (The enforcers), at the world the council will never renege on their deal. Finally turning over the street-solider who's actions are the only reason Jayce is unauthorized as he is, is even at the negotiating table; Whom also the only gunsmith and ordinance mechanic in Silco's organization. As someone who's family is from the third world, no "sovereign" individual, organization or party that took that deal would remain sovereign for long, especially Silco who's reign is all about coercion and violence.

1:30 I could do the opposite, just to prove a point. 22:05 oh shit you're right... 29:17 Okay that's more in the context of the show... it's too broad to understand now... but I can guess alittle based off of what was shown in the show... that being that pleasure can distract us? That I still agree with, but pleasure leading to violence? That's not pleasure doing that, it's power! If you're trying to tell me, a loner, to give up pleasure just cause it led this other person in a completely different living circumstance from myself to kill people, well... He had power, and I don't think I have that amount of power, nor confidence, for that matter... 9:28 yeah somewhat, but not in terms of pleasure, more in terms of power and confidence, or are those two things one in the same? Or are we calling using the term pleasure as a catch-all phrase? To be able to pleasure ourselves in all dimensions? Well... I don't think pleasures the issue still... it's just one of those steps towards an unknown, which happened to be, in the case of this story, 'villainy'. 32:46 I still don't understand entirely, but I do believe that his face being advertised everywhere and him being a celebrity certainly isn't doing him any good in terms of being seen the way he sees himself... cause everyone else will see him as a legend or a terrible tyrant or somebody to be envied...

I think it's worth noting that Jayce was the inventor of this technology and as such I don't think he can really be divorced from the problems it created. As you mentioned in the video he lived a comfortably life and likely could have continued to, moreover those around him (namely his mother) didn't push him to develop the new technology. Hence I think the fact that he assumed a more political role in governing the technology rather than that of a scientist which he desired is really a better choice than it initially appears despite what it ended up doing to him. He at least took some responsibility for his actions/creations. I think you can draw parallels between him and say Oppemheimer or for a more current example Geoffrey Hinton with AI. I like your work/channel btw keep it up.

Hey, I really love watching these essays into the mind that you write but I would like to add that I think you may have missed one final factor in your equation of the self -- Time. It often occurs that people have a sort of slow degradation when under these stresses where-in our minds in a attempt to keep us stable enact a form of mental homeostasis. To say simply, as time in a stressful scenario persists we eventually lose site of the original *norm* in favor of the new norm. In order to stay sane we make excuses and tell ourselves that "this is just how it is" until we no longer have a sense or what that original "is" was anymore. Any so I think it might be fair to say that the equation would be this: Ideals = (Self)(Pressure)(Pleasure)(Power)(Time) Do you have any thoughts on this?
@twinphalanx4465
@twinphalanx4465 Жыл бұрын
As much as I agree with you, your sentiment, can you truly say you would have the same belie fs you were born into excess even if you were born in a different country. Can you really say that your thoughts would be the exact same that you be the same person. Just simply thinking of how your environment and your simple day-to-day life impacts your every thought, how every thought compounds into your day-to-day thought. And you month the month week year to year and suddenly they're your beliefs. Just where you're born impacts you now add birth rites family pressures etc etc. We are our experiences. I'm not saying that a society where we all can chase our dreams wouldn't be better. I hope and dream for that every single day and they ponder ways I could do it myself to save my own children from this world that grinds you down until you can't get back up and then demands. You still do it and you do and that'll phone impacts my own belie fs and why I want nothing more than this world that you speak of. But I cannot say that I would have the same thoughts. If I was born into an excessively wealthy family or money was never an option. I wouldn't think of the future as much. I believe I would think more of the present in less of future care, more about keeping myself comfortable for as long as possible because from the top you can see the poverty. It's just a lot longer fall.

0:43 what anime is on the right of edgrunners and syiens gate?
@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral Жыл бұрын
That's Black Lagoon! A very gritty series, but one which has quite possibly the greatest character work in all of anime woven throughout a dark narrative. Heavily recommended if you can handle something a bit "edgy" but with an actual point to it. An anti-violence violent series is probably the best way to explain it

Those people who had your values and fought revoluciónes against tyrany, but ended up being bad. They changed because they grew afraid to lose their power. It's unfortunate but no one who have those values live with them by choice. If they were powerful from the start, they would have never had those values. No one actively desires equality unless they belive it to be their best option. Equality and colectivismo is a tool for the weak to overun the strong with sheer numbers. Because of the aristocrátic tendency, there comes a point where the royal family is weak and ripe to be overthrown. Few monarchies are overthrown at the hight of their power by revoluciónes. Like the Spanish American, Chen Sheng and Wu Guang uprising, and the American revolución all overthrew their government at the height of their power. I wouldn't say the French revolución counted because come on, it's the French.

Thanks! I'm unsure on the rest of the Fate series. I liked Zero as something detached from the chaos of the overall series, but since it leads into that one, it would be my next logical pick if I did pick up more!

@@ProfessorViral actually since you've watched fate zero you can now see fate stay night without issue because it's it's mostly difficult to watch because you get spoiled on other entries if you do so. But since you watched zero you can no longer get spoiled because you already have been now it's not a bad thing the spoilers don't really ruin the experience.

@@ProfessorViral also I doubt you will have trouble noticing but shirou emiya is actually a good character it's just subtle because he was originally a vn protagonists so you don't get he's internal monologues in the anime. you can still understand him just fine you just need to look past he's uh odd behaviour and dig deeper.

It's only one scene, but on the bridge where he scolds Viktor for seeking help from a friend in the undercity, and goes on to say that everyone from there is dangerous and out to destroy them. He's judging an entire group from a narrow perspective, and ignoring the evidence against it sitting right there- Viktor being from the place he just insulted
