I make a soup I call kitchen sink soup. Especially when we're sick but the kids love it any time. I add chicken broth, any root veggies I have like beets, onions, carrots, parsnips, potatoes. Then add 1 meat protien and a few different kinds of beans. Topped off with any green veggies. Then whatever herbs and spices but it always has turmeric, garlic, pepper, salt, onion. Then whatever I'm in the mood for lol. Sounds like a lot but it's so yummy 😋 also serve topped with sour cream, crackers, or sour kraut

ENJOY her as much as you can. The grief I went through was so deep the last year. I haven't cried so much in my entire life. 99% of it was so good...but wow, the 1% of pain is no joke. It was painful. Learning to live without her...a whole new world. A whole new LIFE!

I just came across your channel today, and subscribed. I'm an ol'lady, raised by Depression-Era Grandparents & tight-wad 60s/70s parents, but I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your content. SO much more wholesome, personable, practical, useful, and classy than virtually all the "entertainment" on television. How wonderful!!! Oh, quick tip on curing your own meats - we have bought grassfed half-cows from local farmers once a year. I maximize my value by asking for unusual cuts (cheek, hangar steaks, necks, tongue, oxtail, etc...), and requesting my organ meats, bones, suet, and other fat scraps. When the lady who owns the abbatoir found out I use cuts that others threw away, she loaded me up with lagniappe from other folks' orders that she otherwise would have discarded, including multiple hearts, livers, and tongues. Beef tongues make AWESOME corned beef, if you have access to affordable beef tongue. (Also ground beef heart is an ingredient in Detroit-style chili for Lafayette-style Coney Island hot dogs - a regional thing where I grew up.) Love the muffin meals, too! 😊

I do this slightly different by dividing my meats into 4 portions (cling wrapped) in one gallon ziplock bag. That way I only take what I need for the following day for protein and I’m frugal with my ziplocks 😅. I buy meats once every 3 months in bulk ($200-300) at a time to prep and freeze. R side is old frozen meats to be used 1st; L new meats. We’re a family of 5 and don’t eat too much meat. 🤷🏼♀️

One other potential for those corn husks (if you are careful when stripping them from the corn) is tamale wrappers. We treat the labor-intensive process of making tamales as an autumn family fun gathering, and having husks we've dried and saved helps cut the costs at the store. Also, if you want to make something a little more cheesy flavored and are low on parmesan, you can sprinkle in some nutritional yeast. 😃

Love, my butcher. I was reaching for marked down chicken and he stopped me. He said "Always stay away from the chicken (meat) if it is 'bloated'. He was starting to pull them off the line. Turns out swelling can occur in packaging due to gases formed as a result of spoilage taking place. Bacterial growth can cause gas formation. If you see a raw food package that looks like someone pumped air into it like a balloon, you should avoid it or discard it.

I was having problems getting meat at a discount. You would think meat would go down on the fourth of July but it didn't. The hamburger was cheaper a couple week before. My discount ticket on meat used to be 50% but now 30%. Even the discount frozen section did the same thing. I've noticed less of a discount has been taken. I really have to be on my toes by having a double discount by using both the discount and timing also a few dollars on my stores app too.

Funny that you mention the ham and corn soup recipe again- I was literally standing by the meat section in Aldi today trying to look up that video, since we got corn in our CSA box this week. Except I had stuck in my head that it’s chicken and corn soup, so I bought the on sale chicken instead. Oops. I did also buy silicone muffin pans there today, before watching this video, but I got the mini size. I’m glad to hear that you’ll be including pantry chat info in the newsletters soon!

Hey.... once you cook that meat like your grandma.. or that recipe... taught you, it's going to taste amazing. Am I right? Am I right? I recently cooked some discount chuck roast from my commissary freezer chest in the crock pot (with a little pre-fry) and my wife was amazed at the flavor! I made some gravy from the drippings to go on the mashed potatoes.... and lord. Everybody was in heaven when they ate that meal.

That's what its about Julie! If the recipe is too complicated, or I can't tweak it to what I already have on hand or planned to purchase, I skip it. There's so much you can do even with a smaller kitchen once you have a few preservation tools and some cast iron! Hope you're having a great summer!

I’m actively seeking a way to use my instant pot Max as a small batch steam canner. I know, I just need to thrift a pot for water bath canning 😩 but space is so limited, I’m wishing heavily on multi purposing. Loving all the freezer options! Wirh being such an avid gardener, last year was the first season that I had what I liked around and barely needed to buy certain things from the grocery store. SO VERY satisfying!

I got so excited when I saw you had a 49 min vlog!!! I too ALWAYS buy discounted meat at a Brookshires in a town next to us. I usually only go once a month, sometimes twice, but I get so much when I go. Their markdown is 60% 💃💃💃 I get so excited! It's like winning a lotto! lol But seriously, it's about the only way we can afford meat. They almost never have ground beef discounted, but I get so many roasts, I grind it up and make my own. I love all your advice and ideas. I learn so much from you. Thank you so much and God bless!

Thanks for the video, Cassandra. You have a lot of good ideas and helpful tips. As someone who watches a lot of food related videos I am just blown away by how much a person can stretch and squeeze out of their food ie peels and pulp and bones for broth.

Hello Auntie Pam! When I first started canning and would watch other canner's pantry tours here on YT, I'd always wonder how I was going to affordably can meat without having my own backyard chickens, or multiple freezers to freeze whole animals, or heck, even the budget for it. I'm able to source a few cuts of meat, eggs, and RAW milk from a local farmer about twice a month, but its not something I could afford to do weekly, and ya know, THAT'S OK. It has been such a shopping game changer now that I've simplified my kitchen to the basics of having food preservation equipment (canner, dehydrator, learning to ferment and a fleet of cast iron) because, like you, I have realized that I can truly stock up on meat with just 10-15 dollars a week. The sales I'm getting now will last us throughout the coming year. What a blessing, what a relief! So glad to hear you've been doing this FOR YEARS!!! :)

@@BecomingaFarmGirl BTW I love your channel and your story. I should mention I am 70 now but it is a lifestyle that has provided well for my family. I live in a small town with a small lot and a 25x40 garden. You would be amazed at what you can grow in that amount of space. I have already had the chickens meat birds, geese, cow and pigs, I am on the slower track now but still providing a good bit of my food. I just learned a new skill a few weeks ago I found a brisket on markdown and made corned beef. It was very good.

Just an FYI you can freeze your corn in its silks if you have the freezer space. The silks protect the corn from any freezer burn. Then you can grill it, boil it, or cook it however you like when you like 🥰

@@BecomingaFarmGirl [Stephen’s wife, Laura] It’s worth every step of preparation! This is not anything to hurry into. All that planning and preparation and learning in the mean time will be hugely valuable toward your journey in homesteading! We are starting over here after moving to a new property just 2 years ago and having more babies (our youngest just turned 1 year old in June). So it is slow going with our resources spread about. Our garden is in eight raised boxes this year and going pretty well, although bugs are fierce this year! Using natural remedies and sprays (neem oil is great!!) is helping with the battle of the bugs. Canning season is just getting going with green beans to start and soon to can potatoes and squash, Lord willing, if all goes well! Your ideas on how to preserve the meats is so helpful. I believe my issue has been putting the meats in the freezer immediately after coming home and trying to cook single meals after thawing that clearance meat. I will try your technique of preserving and cooking as soon as I can with fresh meat. Just using a different technique to preserving may be the key here!! Thank you so much for your videos! I so appreciate you and look forward to watching your journey unfold!!!

With that success in may, I realized I could actually do this stuff.🎉 Now we are stocking the deep freezer with meats (can only find pork around here for cheap so far.) Annnnd I have officially canned black beans/ pork soon to come to make room for hopefully more sales. Thank you so much with the money we are saving I dont feel guilty for taking time off to take care of my pupper who has spinal digeneration as he enters the last times of a happy life.

I am on a fixed income. I shopped at Food Lion on the 3rd of August. I bought a lot of meat. I only spent $55. I saved $85. My receipt showed me my savings. You said something about some stores do things that make the meat look better. I bought some pork ribs for my ribs and rice. When I boiled the ribs there was a strong smell of vinegar. I had heard of stores washing meat in vinegar to make it look better. Needless to say I no longer go to that store. This is the first time I have watched you. But, it won't be the last. My biggest problem is that I can't afford a pressure canner. I do love to can. ❤❤❤❤

We have a small farm and we have been harvesting apricots the last two weeks. I've canned 36 jars of jam, 10 jars of quart sized whole Apricots, dehydrating 24 hours a day, freeze drying. Today I'm canning apricot Chipotle jam and apricot nectar. We have 10 apricot trees down to two trees to pick. Inviting friends and family to pick. I dont want to waste anything.

For someone who worked years in retail in the meat department. She is right about the browning but I would also like to add that workers rotate to meat to prevent from browning on top of rotate due to the date. This prevents bruising and if bruised, it also gets marked down. During this those times month the meat is flying off the shelves, it’s a good time to stock up on hotdogs and breakfast sausage as well. Things are on sale for the holidays so stock up holiday stuff during the holidays at their lowest price.

Here in my neck of the woods (Montreal Canada), we don't see marked down meats (or I don't know where to shop haha!). But when I see really good deals on meat, I stock up for the freezer. This fall I will be adding a pressure canner to my small kitchen and am looking at canning my own veggies and meats for ready to eat meals! I have also transformed our full sun balcony in a container garden. I just love your channel, as it reflects most people reality these days for trying to save on groceries, eating well and working with a modest kitchen out of an apartment, condo or small house (with no acres of land/livestock). Thank you 🤗😊
