Bed Fishing Tips: Catch More Bass During Spawn!

I had a guy yell at me one time when I was fishing beds. He told me why don’t you leave those fish alone and let them spawn. I was fishing for smallmouth. And you know why he made a pretty good point why didn’t I just let those fish spawn? I still fished that day. But I waited another two weeks before I went back so that they could spawn he made some kind of sense to me. I was just putting a lot of pressure of those fish.

Good on ya' mate. Here in SoCal, many of the fish aren't restocked. A few like the trout and catfish are but the populations of LMBs have taken a huge hit. I don't like bed fishing. I usually go after other species during their spawn or fish deep for post spawners.

We have a lot of respect for that approach and our northern staff does the same with smallmouth. Smallmouth populations can be particularly sensitive to bed fishing. Thanks for adding Scott.

I NEED HELP! It's been HOT, sunny (NOT A CLOUD), and slick calm. My water is still in the Prespawn range, upper 50's, maybe still under 60°F. I'm getting skunked other than a few small buck bass on wacky rigged stickbaits. Weeds are barely starting, there is some shallow slimey green algae. What would you throw???

Hey man, Ive been having that exact same situation. I also have caught some on senkos, but Ive been catching most of my fish on a small profile jig. during the heat of the day all my fish go hide in laydowns and under docks. and some hide in tree roots and bushes super tight to the bank. just go down the bank and hit every piece of hard cover with the jig, and hopefully you get some 👍

Good bedding video Kyle. Got a feeling Ms Hunter wasn't behind the camera but I hope she was. Fished with a pro who would hit the bed fish by draping the rig over the bass and jerking hard to hit them with the weight. Said it maked them mad. Only did this when they were reluctant to strike.

Almost every fish that I've seen around beds the last 2 days are so skittish they just spook out on the first cast every time, even some of the giant females. Only fish I found locked on was a 9lber I was able to work for an hour before she bit.
