Scottish kids decided to hunt down a vampire themselves? Yes, those kids are true Scots. As for the Gurning Man, perhaps it was a fellow suffering from a nerve ailment of some type. A few people see him wandering about a night, and the legend builds from those sightings.
@Kasarii4 жыл бұрын
First night in student housing in Copenhagen, I heard a scream. This was in the "should I call police?" range of screaming. I couldn't see anything through the window, there was no commotion, so I eventually made the decision to just go to bed, hoping I wasn't wrong to do so. Turns out Screams At Traffic Lights Man was a bit of local color in the area. Some psych facilities (housing the less dangerous kind of mental patients) operated in the area, and Screams At Traffic Lights Man was allowed to roam freely since he wasn't aggressive and only minimally disruptive. I got to experience him up close at the street crossing on another occasion, not knowing the face that went with the title, I was rather startled. You could see from the reaction of the other people waiting for green that most of them were locals, as soon as they figured out who was doing the screaming, they all relaxed right away.
@TheKulu424 жыл бұрын
@@Kasarii Now that's interesting. Such a fellow could be a jumping off point for a urban legend like the Gurning Man. Once the story's passed around verbally and via the internet, Screams At Traffic Lights Man makes the jump from mildly annoying and even sympathetic to menacing. Yeah my Mom has worked in healthcare all her life (and therefore, mine) and she'd bring me along sometimes. I've seen folks who had developmental disabilities who would look and act similarly to how The Gurning Man is described. I've also seen regular folk's responses that were more monstrous than any patient's behavior. Healthy folk can be pretty mean to people they don't understand. I can easily see how seeing someone like that could spark wild stories. He could have been kept locked away by his family out of misplaced shame and maybe occasionally he'd escape. Doesn't explain the sightings in people's houses but sensationalism can lead to stories popping up like that.

This reminds me of the Green Man of Pittsburgh. The stories I was told was that a mutated man wandered the local roadways his face melted by a massive electric shock that also turned his skin green. It was said he had to smoke his cigarettes out of a hole in the side of his neck. Turns out the Green Man really had existed. He was just a poor burn victim who habitually wore the color green and walked everywhere because he didn’t have a car. Urban legends are wild.

Being a kid in Ayrshire during the 70's, a normal evenings entertainment could be a fun game of 'two man hunt', or 'hunt the cunt', both of which involved receiving a good kicking if you got caught.... fun for all ages, think I was 7-8 when I had my first game... So, this just made this poor, weird guy 'the cunt'....and he got duly hunted, luckily for him he wasn't caught... lol. We had our own event like this in Killie, except we were labelled 'Ghostbusters', hordes of teens roaming the Dean Castle Estate in pitch darkness, think I only ever remember seeing one person with a torch, lookin' for The Grey Lady.... '83 iirc.

I have never thought " gurning " to mean " burning " before in my life... wow we have a lot of uneducated or young folk here. And since when is to gurn or gurning a slang??? I think people need to go back to English class or at least read and learn the dictionary. In Scotland though apart for it meaning to pull horrible faces. It is also used to mean to whine. But in this case it means to snarl and pull horrible faces.

Aside from the one incident in which he appeared in someone's home and his ability to vanish the Gurning Man's behavior suggests a person on the Autism Spectrum who only comes out at night to avoid meeting people. I myself am on the Spectrum, and people sometimes feel threatened by my "stimming"(which is hard to control) and when that happens I wish I could vanish.

Despite having lived in Glasgow most of my life, (I'm a baw hair off 50 years old) and with everyone on both sides of my family being Glaswegian, (for many generations) I've never heard of The Gurning Man in any context other than KZbin and other online sources. Even when I first heard of it, (around three or four years ago) I asked quite a few people about it and no one had any idea about the story or where it could have originated. I even grew up in Crosshill/Queen's Park between 1975 and 1983 on the same street where several of the incidents was alleged to have occurred. I'd be interested to know how this story came about. (Possibly the same person who dreamt up Dumbarton's suicidal dogs.)
@ianmacfarlane12414 жыл бұрын
@Nah mate I'd wondered about that myself - is it all just a bad dream?
@ianmacfarlane12414 жыл бұрын
@Alphonso Muzzy I've never heard the story until a few years ago online. There's a few possibilities - a) it never happened. b) it never happened, and you or your ex invented the story. c) it happened, but for some reason I'd never heard of it, despite having lived in the area at the time, and more importantly, had lots of people who could relay the story to me - a lot of relatives, friends etc. It may well have been something that was kept from me at the time, but why not tell me when I was older? Crosshill/Queen's Park is a very busy area - more so in the late 70s with a big thoroughfare/main road passing close by, businesses, pubs (quite a few pubs right in the very same area - five within a hundred yards of each other. The Old Vic, The Madeira, Queen's Park Café, The Albert Bar, The Hampden Bar) - so it was quite busy after dark. Several schools, including the largest Catholic school in Scotland. There was even a police station in the locality. A variety of housing, with different densities - very large villas/detached Victorian houses and tenements - it certainly wasn't somewhere quiet, where something like this would go unreported. It'd be interesting to think that it could have been true, but I'd prefer to hear first hand accounts If it had happened in a different area I'd be more inclined to accept the story, but it's supposed to have occurred in the exact area I grew up in, and at the exact same time.
@ianmacfarlane12414 жыл бұрын
@Alphonso Muzzy That's a fair point, but I'd addressed it already, (though not on this thread, but I've left several comments on this upload) by asking why no one told me about it when I got older, or why couldn't anyone remember the story when I asked about it a couple of years ago. When I first heard this story about three years ago I immediately contacted several relatives who lived in the area at the time. I had Mum, Dad, four Aunts, four Uncles and eleven cousins, nine of whom were older than me* - ranging from two to fifteen years older than me, in addition to loads of friends who had older brothers and sisters - I knew, and still know, a lot of people who all lived in the area, yet no-one can remember anything about the Gurning Man - none of them had heard of the story until I brought it up, and they all laughed at the absurdity of the story. As for being a "sensitive child" - no, not at all. I was just an average, active boy - this was a different era remember - nobody gave a shit even if you were sensitive - you'd be told to toughen up! We had actual things to concern ourselves with - a spooky story isn't going to be censored. As I said earlier many of my friends had older siblings who'd be more than happy to mentally scar us - they'd go to the video store and get under the counter 'video nasties', (several of which were subsequently banned, or had already been banned, but pirate copies were available)** The Driller Killer, I Spit on Your Grave, Cannibal Holocaust, The Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn of the Dead, The Exorcist - these were all freely available when we were pre-teens, so if the Gurning Man was known to the older brothers of my friends they'd have told us all about him. I'm not denying the veracity of this yarn - I'm not in a position to do so. However, I've no idea where it originated, no idea how well it was known at the time, or how exaggerated it may have become over time. *This is not my entire family, in fact it's not even everyone on my Dad's side of the family - this is just the family members who lived within the area. **I'm not claiming to have enjoyed any of these films/movies at the time. I'm not suggesting that I was this tough kid, however there was a lot of bravado - if someone's big brother had managed to get a VHS tape/video nasty and there was an opportunity to watch it, (off school and parents are at work) and half a dozen of your friends were watching it you couldn't pussy out, nor did you want to be the odd one out when all of your friends had seen Cannibal Holocaust......so you turned up to watch, and probably hated every minute. So while I wasn't a "sensitive child" I didn't enjoy movies that were so extreme that some of them were banned - what a surprise.
