I saw the Bee Gees in Perth Western Australia in the mid 70's. When Robin sang this song as he sang higher at the end he nearly lifted the roof off the stadium and the standing ovation was incredible. Such a powerful voice that cannot be heard on record, cd or dvd. Also saw him during his solo tour.

Love the Bee Gees' early music especially 60's-70's. You are hearing Robin Gibb's voice in this song "I Started A Joke" from 1968. He also sang lead on "Massachusetts", "I've Gotta Get A Message To You", "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" etc. Some of their other early hits were "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "To Love Somebody", "Holiday", "World", "And The Sun Will Shine", "Really & Sincerely", "Words", "The Singer Sang His Song", ""Lonely Days", "Melody Fair", "First Of May", "Give Your Best", "Lamplight" etc.

❤"And The Sun Will Shine" has a similar effect on me, as yours was to "I Started A Joke"❤ ...it's just _the_ most intense feeling, yet difficult to describe. Robin Gibb was _always_ my favourite 'BeeGee' right from the start and I felt so sorry for him (and Barry etc) when Andy died, and even more so when Maurice - his twin brother - younger than Robin by 30 minutes - died after so short an illness, albeit that Maurice suffered intense abdominal pain prior to his death... Awful.😢 Then, Robin... I was so sad, and poor Barry, his sister and all of the Gibb children... Condolences to all who grieve. 🌺 Rest In Peace Andy Gibb, Maurice Gibb & Robin Gibb (& their parents, too).🌺

NOBODY EVER CALLED BARRY SONGBIRD and you and everybody knows it. That is where your delusional attempts to twist facts comes in. Since the remark was true you create your own "alternate facts". One of your elite group of telepaths just the other day claimed that someone hated Barry. Why? Just because they didn't declare his voice, looks, etc. were "awesome". As the first comment said many people called Robin "Songbird". Every time someone compliments Robin you have to contradict them. That is insulting to that person and to what they believe and you do it on purpose. Don't pretend things you say are so innocent because they are always nasty petty barbs. When I watch a video on Robin I like to read the positive comments WHICH ARE MANY. Re-watching an old video is my prerogative. Again and again you insult other people who post their positive comments about him, in essence calling them liars. A simple solution, STOP watching videos that obviously and exclusively pertain to Robin who you say you hate. Voila.

Everyone is so taken by Barry's voice, his incredible falsetto, that they forget that Robin sang lead on a lot of their earlier songs. Robin has a distinctive sound, he is incredible with I'VE GOT TO GET A MESSAGE TO YOU and he wrote and sang of my home state MASSACHUSETTS.. One of my absolute favorite Bee Gees songs is TRAGEDY. A much more hard rocking sound.
@justtere
@justtere 6 ай бұрын
According to all the important tabloids at the time (Tiger Beat, etc.) Barry wrote Massachusetts on a dare that there were words he couldn't write a song about. I wish I could remember who it was that dared him. Anyway, the word chosen was Massachusetts. I can understand thinking no one could do that. He not only won the dare he also wrote such a beautiful song. Oh, I just remembered where I heard this recently. It was a documentary about the group, with Barry discussing how hard it is to believe he outlived all of his brothers, including Andy. So I also heard it from his mouth, verifying what I remember reading in Tiger Beat. So it must have been any of his three brothers. As I write this, I remember Barry saying the falsetto was not his idea. One of the brothers was doing the falsetto. Their producer at the time (me with CRAC, sorry) had Maurice try for it, so we got Barry. The producer wanted Robin to save his very special voice.

@@justtere - That is wrong. "Massachusetts" was Robin's idea. Even in the recent HBO documentary Barry said. "Robin came in and said I have an idea for a song and sang the melody to "Massachusetts" and I loved it." Mo said, "Robin and I finished the melody in about five minutes in a NY hotel". SOURCE* - The Bee Gees day by day by Andrew Sandoval. It was not written by Barry on a dare. PS. Their producer Arif Mardin wanted someone to scream in a higher voice to add some interest to the song they were recording and Barry said "I'll give it a try", not Maurice.

SalvoG, what a wonderful reaction to Robin's signature song. Every time he performed it live he received a standing ovation sometimes lasting over a minute. One live performance that you should check out would be 1989's Melbourne concert, one of his most notable performances of this amazing song where he did receive a very long standing o. One very horrible incident in Robin's life that probably contributed to him writing very sad songs like "I Started a Joke" was the November 1967 Hither Green train disaster where he and future wife Molly were almost killed. Robin, still a teenager, was nearly decapitated from a train rail that came through their car and missed him by mere inches. He got out through a window and helped Molly out as well and continued to help others who were badly hurt or worse and this horrible experience stayed with him his entire life. Barry even said that it brought the pathos out in his brother and he was never the same. What a brave young man he was that day but it had a very lasting effect on him. Thank you for reacting to one of Robin's most beautiful leads and if I could suggest one other. "I Can't See Nobody" is another amazing Robin lead and "The Midnight Special" channel recently released a 1973 live performance which, in my humble opinion, is his best performance ever of this extraordinary song. He poured his heart and soul into all his live performances but this 1973 performance was just mesmerizing. Please consider reacting to this wonderful Robin lead. It would be greatly appreciated.

@@jpmnewyork - In that train wreck there was a young man about his own age crying out to Robin "Please don't let me die" but Robin couldn't get him out of the tangled wreckage and his voice faded away. The next day, although told to rest he said he had to let his feelings out and he wrote a song with the lyrics "Really and Sincerely I tried". It could be interpreted as a love song but the meaning is clear. At only 17 he had to comfort people terribly injured some even needing on the spot amputations to free them, many died impaled by rails. He had PTSD for life. It wasn't recognised or treated back then.

The song HOLIDAY ❤ Robin’s vibrato has a haunting quality, strong and clear. Most BeeGees songs that are sad, feature his voice as lead. His voice is so unique that I actually recognized it when I heard an “unknown” Bee Gees song used as a sound track on a TV show. Maurice has the deepest voice of the 3, but they know where to use the voices on their songs to get the best emotional response from listeners. The combination of voices makes magic. Listen to them sing live at concerts. You can see how they combine their voices and some live performances are even better than studio versions. Then they moved to Australia, where they became professional and left school early. They were amazed by the Beatles when they went to Australia and tried for some years to have a hit record. Then decided to return to England and sign up with Brian Epstein, the Beatles manager. He was too busy and passed them to Robert Stigwood, who took them to success. I always liked Robin the best he had a beautiful voice and when I found out that he was short-sighted like me, it was even better. He said it gave him confidence to go on stage, as he couldn't see the audience. Barry always said that Robin punched more than his weight, both physically and musically.

Robin had a way to evoke emotions on so many levels I’m not this least surprised to see his voice made your tears pour from your eyes like it did for many. Including me too. All of the brothers were here to make us smile, cry and say goodbye. Long live the songs, sounds and harmonies they created for all of time. Timeless and beautiful.

Robin sang lead on many of their earlier songs. You can usually tell it's him by his incredible vibrato. Other early songs to check out: Got to Get a Message to You, To Love Somebody, Lonely Days, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart and Massachusetts. And post Saturday Night Fever: Nights on Broadway, Tragedy, Love You Inside and Out and Jive Talking. All these songs are superb!

The most visceral reaction I've ever had to an artist happened when I discovered the singer Ferdi Tayfur. Never ever have I heard someone sing with such emotion. The fact that none of his singing is in English actually enhances that effect, and what he thinks and feels come across clear as a bell. I now have 17 of his albums.

Hi SalvoG, This is one of my favourite songs of all time. I was introduced to it by a lovely lady called Christine in the late 1980's. I had a holiday in 1989 to Kenya, and I played this multiple times through my headphones on the outbound flight. After 3 glorious weeks, I returned, with this amazing piece of music whirling around my head for the whole 8 hour flight! I cried. Cried some more....... I thank you for your reaction to this, and completely understand why it brought tears to your eyes. What an honest reaction. Robin's voice was astonishing. From Robin to Robin.

@@CeciliaRodriguezRoge-eg6nl - I agree. RJ bears no physical or vocal resemblance to Robin. He is Dwina's son. He does look very much like Dwina's ex, David. RJ was also adamant about Snow not being Robin's daughter, perhaps fearful of losing some inheritance. She is Robin's doppelganger although half Asian. Interestingly, Spencer, Melissa and Snow received money after Robin died. RJ did not. Snow received a home for her and her mother. Dwina got the Prebendal. My analysis, take it or leave it.

The Gibb family moved from England to Australia in 1958 when the Gibb brothers were young. They formed the band after they had moved here ( Brisbane Australia ). I remember listening to them on the local radio. I assume the early albums were Australian recordings. They then got a contract with producer Robert Stigwood and moved back to England where they became famous worldwide

From WordFacts: "This song is about someone who has done or said something horribly wrong, which resulted in alienating everyone around him. It's a great example of lyrical songwriting, and very much a love-it-or-hate-it song. With the opening line, "I started a joke, which started the whole world crying," followed with, "I started to cry, which set the whole world laughing," the song can be heard as achingly poignant or overly sentimental, depending on your mindset."
