I know this is hilarious to us, but I’m genuinely curious how people from the Middle Ages would react to this. Would the four chord pattern be too repetitive and boring? Would the drums, used in this weird way, be too distracting to listen to the melody? Would the keys of our modern songs be too major or too minor for them? Any music historians with a good idea of how this would be interpreted by middle age Europeans?

As historian of art, I find myself incompetent to give you valid answer. However, you are on good way asking these questions.
@marcellkovacs54524 жыл бұрын
Candy Shop is actually in the Phrygian mode (not key) which was commonly used in Medieval music. They would probably find it weird, but the disconnect wouldn't be as big as if you showed serial music to Mozart, for example.
@GummyBear42344 жыл бұрын
Not an expert but I'm currently learning about Medieval music in my college music class. This is what I know, hope this helps some. Marcell mentioned there was no key (major or minor) and this is true. It's because it had not been defined yet (at least in Western culture). There was also no rhythmic structure like a beat or pulse. Most instruments were seen as sacrilegious and believed to be part of pagan worship. Most of the power (aka money) at the time was in the hands of the Catholic church (the Pope) and so most recorded music we have was religious in nature. The music was often monophonic and without the accompaniment of instruments ( so a cappella singing). Although we do know that there were instrumental songs during the time (450-1450) we unfortunately don't really know what they would sound like. Due to a lack of education and paper being a huge luxury, common music was not recorded often. So yeah... long story short this would be super weird to them. The pagans would probably be rocking out to this and the Catholics would be on the church floor having heart attack 😆 I would like to remind you though that I am not an expert in this field and this is done in a very narrow perspective of the Western culture. So while there may have been defined keys or rhythmic structure developed in other places around the world, it is not a reflection on Medieval Europe. Hope I didn't go into too much detail... This concludes my presentation lol.
@marcellkovacs54524 жыл бұрын
Sounds like Desi knows more than I do. We had a few lectures on medieval music at university, but it was an entry level module, so I'm not an expert by any means.
