Great job Molly and magic that you spotted your first Queen. That never gets old. It's always a "YES" moment. Found 1 Queen, took 1 sting; I bet you will remember that Queen for a lot longer than that sting. You got some of the best beekeepers in the country willing to teach you so take full advantage of their combined knowledge. Its also wonderful to see knowledge being passed on with simple, clear, gentle instruction and advice. Bee clubs should be adding this to their must watch.

Bob, I’ve been keeping bees for 10 years keeping about 10-20 hives depending on the year. I Learned some new things from this video as simple as it is. I work professionally as an accountant, and this reminds me so much of the experience I’ve been having lately training new staff. We often forget how many little tricks of the trade we’ve learned along the way. You don’t know the significance of these tricks until you train someone new. Awesome video. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Always look forward to your videos.

Knowledge and Legacy are truly the only things we leave behind. Your wisdom and knowledge has been a blessing to more than you will probably ever realize. Having knowledge is one thing, but to share it, and hope others succeed in there endeavors, is awe inspiring. Not many commercial beekeepers share their wisdom and experience, but you Sir are the difference this industry needs. More beekeepers should share your values. I feel the wheels rolling in the more supportive direction. The next generation is the future of the craft. We thank you 🙏. I will help carry the torch.

hi bob i started beekeeping in 1965 working for bob mc donald, i think you will prefer this way if you give it a go, remove 2nd frame in first, its definetely easier most of the time, also when you then remove the wall comb you prise it over and don't damage comb or bees when you pull it up if it is attached to burr comb on wall of hive ...happy honey flow.
@michaeljoncour49032 жыл бұрын
also a good habit is scraping any burr comb off walls on every occasion to reduce this problem...

As @whoeverit said. " Great Job Miss Molly" pretty good teaching group to have. Spotting your first in Hive Queen is always magical and never gets old. Taking your first sting not as memorable as finding Queens. Learning anything new is always a process of small steps and you / we all go through the process in different ways. After a while it will be like the retail store you work through the job process with out even having to think what the next step is. When Bob Binnie and Ian Steppler use a very similar method of taking a split - it's probably a solid best practice.

I have a question: At 8:05 you say ‘see how they’re all facing you?’ Does it signify that the bees are getting defensive when they turn to face you? I hadn’t thought about this before but it’s a useful thing to look out for to judge their temperament. I enjoyed this video, Molly did well and it was lovely to see how you guided her along.

Hello Bob, I am sory for keep commenting, but I noticed that the veil that ' Molly' is wearng has a plain material section under her chin. My Son bought me a new bee suit two years ago with the same thing. As soon as I tried it on, I realized that you couldn't see anything on the frames, unless you lifted them right up in frount of the section of net that you can see through. It was very disorientating and would make it even harder for beginners to become confident. As you know, when managing large numbers of hives, a lot of what you do and look for is done quickly, without lifting frames too far out of the hive. With one of these veils, you would need to be nearly standing on your head to work efficiiently. I cut the bottom part of mine out and replaced it with black net and it is fine now. All credit to ' Molly ', she did really well, but she must have found it a lot more difficult than if she had had a veil like all the rest of you wear. I would also like to applaud the kind and patient way you treat your staff. You are generous with your praise, an expert in your field, and a natural teacher. Kind regards, Tony Marsh. UK.

Thanks Tony. That veil is no longer with us. It was a sample given to us and the brand we carry now is much different.

Wish we can work hand in hand for few days !

What is the logic behind black hive covers?
@bobbinnie98724 ай бұрын
They are paraffin dipped plywood which will eventually turn dark. It's a positive in the winter and a negative in the summer. We don't choose the dark color on purpose.

We messed up our deep brooder. We did not wax the frames and we violated bee space. Now we have a box with burr comb and it looks like the bees built out comb but it's not attached to the frames. Instead it's connect between the frames. We're not able to inspect without completely destroying what they've built. Any suggestions what we should do?
@bobbinnie98722 жыл бұрын
I would start a fresh box with new properly waxed and properly spaced frames and shake all the bees in as I disassembled the old box. Leave a few frames out to provide a space you can shake into and then put them back in place after shaking. If there is not a nectar flow I would feed thin syrup to promote comb building until it is done. Good luck. It will be messy but the results should be worth it.
