Thank you for doing what you do! My 2 hives died in fall in Va. starting over in the spring. I had asked a question the other day, I didn’t hear the answer. what kind of class should I take for my second year or what book do you recommend

Hi Dave! Thank you for guiding me through my first year as a beekeeper (2024). I have a question: I have pollen powder that I bought last year around June. Does it go bad- do I need to replace it? Or can I use it this year?

I have Eastern Red Cedars here and they get Apple Cedar rust gauls every spring. I had open queen cells when the tree Gauls erupted last year. I am tracking that as an early indicator this year. Hope all is well. Keep bees for as long as you can. ;)

How about a tattoo of you in your bee suit, standing next to your racing bicycle, surrounded by bees while at the summit of KZbin mountain.

I put a 10lb sugar brick on top of each of my hives in the fall. I put that reflective insulation on that and 1 inch foam board on that. My bees more often than not the bees get themselves between the sugar and the reflective insulation. I believe that reflects the heat directly back on them with food at their feet. Seems to work well

THANK YOU FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS AND ON THE SIDE, THE FERAL BEES I'VE BEEN FEEDING, WELL, THEY DIDN'T GO HOME TODAY. THEY DO HOWEVER HAVE PLENTY OF LIQUID NUTRITION TO GET THROUGH THE NIGHT IF THAT'S ALL THEY DID WAS EAT AND HEAT. OUR GROUND IS TOO DRY HERE FOR SMALL HIVE BEETLE LARVAE TO PUPATE SO THEY WON'T BE IN THE POLLEN PATTY MY BEES HAVE AS WELL. NOT TO MENTION THE PEAR SLICE THEY ATE TODAY I GAVE PEACHES THE OTHER DAY

I am a rookie, and I am pretty sure I lost 3 out of 4 hives in my first winter. That being said, they aren't dead until they are warm and dead. I treated for mites in early September, everybody's population looked good, lots of food stores, almost no mites and all queens had been seen. I used Cera Cell feeders with candy boards after adding robbing screens. Not sure what when wrong other than maybe the weird warm days we had (got up to 55 a few times in December in NW Ohio) I'm thinking they ate through a bunch of stores.

I think a lot of the problem with the flow Hive is the area that you're in because I have heard some people say they are fabulous but they would be in another state would be saying the same thing it just wouldn't drive good
