I feel like whimsigoth is the style I've been looking for since I was a teen in the 2010s! I've always liked a mix of grunge, goth, flowy, and thrifted "ugly" clothing XD.

It's so funny. This style is so versitile. I love neon colors so I wear them but in a modern witch way. Love moons, suns, bugs, florals and layers. I was very into boho chic with goth vibes as a teen so this is up my alley 😊 Just with tons of colors !!!

I'm a very young at heart 50 year old woman and for as long as I remember, this has been my favorite way to dress. It just feels more authentic to who I am. I had my career in the corporate world and of course had to dress to fit into that world. Now that I have left that world I've naturally gone back to the whimsigoth dress sense. It is great to be home, may aswell be me, even as an older educated woman

It's also very age inclusive. I can see a 10 year old girl playing with this as well as older 60+ women ( who pioneered it in the first place) and everyone in between. They will all look great and make it suit their lifestyle.

I'm so glad to see this style is alive and well again. I'm gen X and have been dressing like this since around 1989. Back then it was called fairy goth, fantasy goth or hippy goth. My friends and I loved the style because it made our situation clear; we weren't career girls, we were too busy making jam and chasing fairies in the woods. A few things we did I haven't seen much or anything of lately... cut the feet off knee-high socks to make them arm warmers, or cut the crotch out of tights (black sheer or fishnet) and boom, you got a top. There was a lot of altering, dyeing (tie-dyed nightgowns were IT) and scissor-hacking going on. The '2010s' bag made me laugh as I remember them from the 90s too! 😆

I'm definitely wearing parts of this style but more boho and neon/colorful. I bet you looked amazing all these years🌻🌻🌻 It's such a universal and adaptable style. But I gotta say I have gone to corporate meeting for quality control with blue lipstick and huge moon earrings. After a while they get used to it 😅 To me dressing the way you feel helps your productivity!

Wow! I used to have so many pieces that could create this aesthetic. I was inspired by Phoebe from friends , Stevie Nicks, as well as the 90s. I now realize I was trying to create this aesthetic, but could never really bring it to fruition. It would either look very 90s, boho, or modern witchy. I loved this video! ✨

"psychologically uncomfortable" who, ME?! COULDN'T BE! beeeeeps! i loved this!!!! esp. your analysis at the end. such a good point that our witchy-idols of the 90s were just "normal people" with extraordinary skills. we aspired to be them because we feel, in our heart of hearts, that we're also normal people with something special inside. & it's true! lovely video, friend.

As a witch and a 90’s kid, I absolutely LOVE that this style is back gaining popularity again. I’ve pretty much dressed like this since I was a kid (lots of layers, lots of cardigans, tons of moons and stars patterns and motifs etc.), so I’m happy to be able to easily find clothes of this style in mainstream stores. Though thrifting is still my preferred method of shopping, it is nice to that more handmade clothing designers are experimenting with this style too.

I have been in love with this aesthetic since the day I was born. As an adult, I've been able to actually work towards a wardrobe that focuses on the kinds of person I am at heart. But, as a slightly chunkier girl with very large breasts, I'm glad you mentioned "skinny white girls" in the negatives. It's not impossible to get this aesthetic if you're not a skinny white girl, but when that's all you see on social media it is a bit intimidating to put together an outfit you're comfortable stepping into public in. I'd love love love to see more people in all shapes sizes and colors embrace this aesthetic! I've tried emulating outfits I've seen, but they just never seem right for me. Layering, for example, is tough with big boobs. It just adds too much bulk. I've started embracing crop tops, but they're sometimes very difficult to style with my body type. It's a struggle, man...

This explanation is PHENOMENAL!!! You covered all the bases! Apparently this is a style I wear and have worn for years (YES I still have my fabric Boho messenger bag made in Nepal) and I did not know this was the “name” of this style! I love heavy boho skirts from Agan Traders, with combat boots, lots of layering pieces, crystal jewelry, a rancher/boho hat, earthy colors, jewel tones, leather or faux fur, vintage/retro or Victorian nods in styling (teensy bit of Steampunk), moons and stars 🌙💫✨, wild and free hairstyles, scarves in my hair, long pashmina scarves, peasant dresses and 3-tier dresses, butterflies 🦋, and anything handmade or eclectic. My house is filled with houseplants, trees, crystals, essential oils, and natural fibers and textures. 🌿🌲🪴

As someone who lived through the first iteration of this trend in the 90s, here was the whimsiigoth uniform that I remember: Dark Marten boots with heavy tights, something like velvet or layers of socks and tights...those witch legs get cold riding on brooms. Also stripey socks of course and cat/bat/spider web themes as prints on socks all year long, not just Halloween, A skater skirt or mini dress with a skater skirt, a black mesh top with a black tank top layered over it, jewelry: those crystal ball necklaces on a piece of silky string instead of a chain and Victorian style earrings and rings (with lots of blown glass beads and detailed metal/scrollwork on a silver colored metal of some kind). Black was the basic color but lots of jewel tones paired with black. The elements that looked "off" to me in your outfits were things like denim/chambray/patchwork and the head scarf. All of those things fit into "hippie, granola, bohemian etc. Of course things evolve so it's interesting to see one trend get absorbed into another...

The BAG! I just remembered I actually did have one in HS that I got off a street vendor! This whole thing was so my exactly vibe, since I love a long skirt and some (earthy) nature motifs. Bandanas are great too, but I tend to roll them and tie them around my neck- it's a great option if you're going casual and not feeling jewelry and never looks out of place. Also, I got a kick seeing some of my follows, or stuff I've pinned for ages pop up (though I really need to check out Stevie Nicks.) If you end up doing another one of those designer videos, Anna Sui would be a cool topic!

This was fascinating, thank you! I dressed like this in the 90's but body issues/plus size kept me from full self expression. Now at 55, I have found myself lost as far as clothes/style are concerned, hiding away in things I don't like. But I recently realised that clothes can be part of my magical practice too. I had no idea there was a name for the style I was looking for but I knew I would know it when I saw it - this is it! It's going to be so much fun to make my outside look like how I feel on the inside.

Very nice! Since the 00's I've been a fan of the goth subculture and music; here I don't see that much resemblance to it in spite of the "goth" in the name, but some influence from the 90's goth style can be seen, which I really like, I love the bohemian and vintage influences too and always have liked these deep dark colors. And as for the similarities to the goth music scene, I think some can be found especially in the ethereal/neoclassical darkwave subgenres, such as e.g. Faith and the Muse.

I spent all of my teens and half my 20s wearing black. I’m over it. Ironically now in my 30’s I’m into lighter more “youthful” colors, I guess, lots of pastels, but I style them in a very boho-witchy sort of way. Which is why I am soooo into this aesthetic, I mean, first off I absolutely love the 90’s and who doesn’t want to be a witch? The only thing that kinda keeps it from being 100% my favorite, is the use of darker colors mostly. I am just very over the dark colors, been there, done that, I want to wear pink and white for once. So basically I’m like a pastel whimsigoth. I’ve been calling myself a “soft cosmic hippie” for a while now but it’s basically this just…lighter.

I love this video so much I'm fighting the urge to create a bunch of dummy accounts just so I can thumbs up this video again and again! lol I'm just so glad this aesthetic is trending because as someone who has always loved it, it really warms my heart and makes me feel validated that others enjoy it too. Way before I knew it was a derogatory slur, I used to call my decorating style "victorian g*psy witch" so it's nice to finally have a legitimate, respectful name for it. My day to day clothing style is way more practical/comfy just because of my job but I always said, if I could, I would dress like Stevie Nicks everyday. Gotta save those outfits for my days off.

So I really appreciate how you went about explaining this style, you were very thorough and you really knew what you were talking about. I only mention the last part because I remember this other video that tried to explain the style and I'm sorry but the person was clueless, didn't know any of the references of what inspired the looks or anything beyond a basic sophomore level so this was a nice surprise to see something so detailed in explanation. I also appreciate how you didn't conflate this with the Goth scene because as someone who actually is a part of it and has been for 16 years now, it really is irritating when people conflate it as some "goth" style when it isn't and has nothing to do with the music-based subculture of Goth at all. So I'm thankful that you referred to the style accurately as "WhimsiGothic" as opposed to "Whimsigoth" because it definitely does fit more into the "Gothic" style what with it having some throwback to the Renaissance period with certain patterns and silhouettes (The peasant blouses and vest-style bustiers). And finally I appreciate how you didn't say that this style was some new thing when it's been around for 20+ years, it's just that there was no clear cut name for it back then and I'm just glad you gave credit where credit is due by naming off references that utilized and influenced this style. Me personally, I sorta started incorporating some of this kinda stuff last year into my personal style though I admit that I didn't know of the term at the time and was just going off outfits that I liked from shows I was re-watching like 90s Sabrina the Teenage Witch (mostly Aunt Zelda and some of Sabrina) as well as Misty Day with her Bohemian inspired look which I wanted to try for a long while but just never got around to it until last year haha. And of course, I have thrown in some Stevie Nicks inspired influences as well. And just the general 1970s and 1990s in general. Also in much more recent, some nods to Willow from Buffy haha. Honestly the only thing I wish I had more of in my personal wardrobe is more velvet but it's tough finding velvet pieces in my sizes lol. But yeah all that said, very nice video, easily one of the best and most respectable analysis for the style out there.

Yeah, I think some people miss out that the "gothic" doesn't refer to the goth subculture at all. It's more of a boho + grunge + renaissance revival via your cool art teacher moment. Though there are definitely branches of goth music that mesh with it!

I appreciated your depth and intellectual viewpoints in this video. Thank you for making this more REAL and GENUINE than FAKE FAST TRENDY FASHION focused. Mentioning covid and "magic in reality" as part of why this style is in mainstream makes a lot of sense and, I believe, is an important point. Back to our root and introspection is part of this aesthetic. Thank you for your research and work. 👍

omg this one is so me. i love lisa bonet, anita pallenburg, stevie nicks etc. that glam rock, boho, rock chick, mystical vibe is my go-to. it goes a little boho hippie tribal when i'm by the beach as well. also great breakdown of why this look is so appealing now, i do think humanity is waking up to our spiritual power more and more and especially with the events of the last few years and the increasing levels of disclosure people are becoming much more interested in studying occult wisdom.

So glad I found this video. You did such a great job describing this aesthetic, and formulaically listed all the elements Ive been looking for separately. Been struggling with gender identity stuff, and whimsygoth has really been the only way I can dress lately that feels gender affirming. Has a lot of feminine elements, but a lot of it feels more gender neutral for me. I think the gender neutral energy for me comes from grounding the aesthetic in nature/ earth/ celestial elements like stones, (faux) fur, plants, sun and moon motifs, etc. keeping my outward presentation connected with nature makes me feel most like myself, and less pressure to conform to gender norms that don’t quite fit 🪨 🌱 🦔 🌞 🪐 🌙 ⛰️

like with many kind of subculture's fashions it can often be a way for young woman to express their aversion to conformist, sanitized, mechanistic, seemingly soulless society. like you said they want to bring some magic to the world and show that they stand for something different. it is material afterall, but it can be a great gateway for many young women to live an authentic, expressive and artful life. if only we don't stop at the material and become just the same as all other consumerist cultures.

Love this! Thank you for this video. It's been a stressful 3 years but we are coming out of it! I love this look it definitely helps get through the day. But may I add, maybe we are all realizing that we do have a bit of magic, and that it's slowly being reclaimed by those who know themselves. The pandemic forced people to be with themselves and for better or worse deal with their past, their emotions, relationships with others and to look in the mirror and say is this who I am? Or who I want to be?. .. Magic is in everything it's not fantasy, only portrayed via media when it suits them. But yeah stay witchy!!!🎉🎉🎉
