Young Beethoven had his playful moments, he wasn't always grumpy (though he had a lot to be grumpy about if you read his bio).
@manthasagittarius16 ай бұрын
You'd have to go very far to find a wider emotional range than Beethoven across his whole composing life. He had it all, and mostly he had it out on his sleeve all the time. Some people think it was love all dressed up with nowhere to go, but really it was the whole of existence he was addressing.
@logansh78985 жыл бұрын
This trio has everything -- Drama & Humor, Profoundness & also a Showing-Off Character. In other words, it is sheer beauty. And the way the musicians perform it is incredible! I am playing this trio soon, and this recording has made me want to practice it so much more! There are so many colors here, and the performers show all of them.
@labemolmineur11 жыл бұрын
I've never seen anyone else bring so much wit and humor into the third movement, which was probably what Beethoven had in mind. Many pianists "normalize" the three measures of trills in the last variation, cutting them to one (and therefore cutting out the humor). Jones not only plays what's written, but prolongs the B-flat as a joke. This is so wonderful- chamber music at its best!
@20gilbert209 жыл бұрын
Caramellatta I love this humor, too. And then after the trill, Beethoven's genius was to modulate away to another key. Just wonderful!
@labemolmineur3 жыл бұрын
@@20gilbert20 Yes! I love how Jones does it here too- he smiles mischievously, because he knows that he has taken the group into a very distant key, G major, and they are now in trouble. Haha! How to get back? He tests the waters with descending, pianissimo chords, the other two players respond ("really? Are you sure?"), and then, when the clarinettest realizes they are indeed back in B flat major, it's a Hurray!! A loud, jubilant, Allegro that they all celebrate. Absolutely brilliant.
@labemolmineur3 жыл бұрын
Also, this is one of very few performances where the musicians play the dynamics in the third movement as intended, I think: in bar 44, the crescendo takes us from pianissimo to piano in bar 46, and then a pianissimo again in bar 47. Almost everyone else plays a big crescendo and then a "subito" piano in bar 46 (and then almost no difference in bar 47). The whole variation is extremely quiet, and I love the atmosphere the players here get (while admitting that the cellist is probably the only occasionally disappointing element in the group, not having as much fun as the other two)- it makes it funny again: the pianist suddenly steals the show in a first variation, flexing his muscles and excitedly showing his virtuosity; the other two respond by doing something totally different. They answer his extroversion with introversion: "If you can run up and down the keyboard, can you sing as beautifully as we do?" And then the clarinettist, inspired, suddenly breaks into a wild, "con fuoco" variation. Everything here feels like the spontaneous creation of the moment.

This is one HEALTHY cellist! I just love the tone she generates. It usually goes without saying, but in her case the exactitude with which she nails each and every note on the neck is just great. Her vibrato is so robust, and her bowing has a tremendous feel. I even like her gown :) Thank you for posting.

I just noticed that all three of them are sitting on piano benches. I think that says a lot about their posture, the interaction they have with each other, and ultimately the music that comes out so beautifully. Bravo. A lot of chamber groups are opting for standing now for that very reason. As the actor F. Matthias Alexander said many years ago, "The head leads, and the spine follows." Rigid high back chairs just don't allow for that kind of flexibility. Beautiful!

Truly magnificent performance of this magnificent, young Beethoven piece! The Backun clarinet sound beautifully produced by the soloist resembles the sound of early classical clarinets and is very appropriate for this piece, especially in the ethereal slow movement. All three soloists are virtuosos at their instruments and very musical in interpretation of this Beethoven, one of my favorite compositions to perform. The humorous ending is truly unique and appropriately & tastefully initiated by the pianist & reciprocated by the clarinetist & cellist. And the quality audio/video recording, just awesome!

The playfulness and joy of this music supersedes the jolliest works of Mozart. Clearly influenced by Mozart and yet so different. I think this is written first for the players to enjoy themselves by showing off their skills, and then for the audience to enjoy the typically fast and excellent Beethoven music. This is a work of utmost resilence.

I was going to comment on the humor too-not just at the end, but how each launches into the variation as though inventing an entirely new world! And something else: how Beethoven ends the exposition of his first movement with a jaunty little theme that, rhythmically and melodically, is almost a preview of the theme of the variations.

Wonderful playing all around. I big thumbs up! What's wrong with the other 150,000 listeners' thumbs? Audio and video is also first-class. Maybe the interpretation is a little too romantic for my early Beethoven taste with all the tempi changes in the middle of phrases, yet ensemble is tight and the passion is definitely Beethoven. Keep playing together. A fine ensemble indeed.
