Probably the most sublime opening of any piece of music. Together with the Benedictus section of the Missa Solemnis and Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus as well as Schubert 's Adagio from his great String Quintet. The list could go on obviously. Highly recommended. The Takács do it justice. Beyond words.

Takacs Quartet is my favorite recording of op133 too.

A superb recording all around. And the rest of their set of the Late Quartets does not disappoint either.

You're very welcome! This is such a special performance of Op.131 and well recorded too. Credit due to both the wonderful players of the Takacs ensemble and the sound engineers at Decca. I highly recommend buying all three sets (Early, Middle, and Late) by the Takacs on Decca

When I hear the Takacs perform op. 131 it’s as if I’ve never heard this music before. Their take is so unique and at the same time beautiful that compared to all others I’ve heard this becomes a new epiphany. Thank you for this revelatory experience.

Simplemente ¡sublime!

I know this Takacs set of Beethoven string quartets is highly celebrated. I have tried for many years to enjoy these performances as well, but the sound of the recordings always gets in the way of my enjoyment of the music. I feel the microphones were placed too close, the string sound comes too loud and harsh to my ears. They did not sound loud or harsh at all when I heard them live. Sometimes I miss the sound of recordings from 1950's and 60,s.

The solution is the Végh quartet's 1952 recording then
